Abstract
The sex and age of the population structure of a population group is closely related with its social, economic structure and the degree of health and medicare services. For the purpose of analyzing the structural characteristics of rapid changes in Korean population, and consequently helping to predict the demand of health and medicare services and to identify its beneficiary, this study analyzes the population structure utilizing the data obtained from years 1955 to 2020 and other data relating to the changes in the population. Major findings are as follows: 1. Annual increase rate of population was about 1% during 1950-1955, about 3% during 1955-1960, and 1.36% during 1985. It is expected to decrease to 0.07% in 2020. 2. The ratio of population aged 0-14 is expected to reduce to 16.5% in 2020 from 43.5% in 1966, while the ratio of population aged 15-64 is expected to increase to 72.1% in 2020 from 53.2% in 1966. Furthermore, for the population group of age 65 and over is expected to increase from a mere 3.3% to 11.4% in 1966. 3. The aging index of population is expected to increase to 69.5 in 2020 from 8.0 in 1955, while the child-woman ratio is expected to decrease 22.3 in 2020 from 68.1 in 1955. 4. The age index of 80 and over is expected to acutely increase to 305.8 in 2020 from 44.4 in 1955, while the sex ratio is expected to decrease to 31.0 in 2020 from 63.6 in 1955, on the contrary. 5. The comparison of the Major Age Composition between the urban and rural areas in 1985 showed that 29.7% represents the age group 0-14 in the urban areas, while 30.4% represents the same age group in rural areas. As for the age group of 15-64, it was 67.3% in the urban areas, and 62,7% in the rural areas. For the age group of 65 and over showed 3.0% in the urban areas, and 6.9% in rural areas. 6. The comparison of aging index showed figure of 10.1 for the urban areas, and 22.5 for the rural areas for the year 1985. 7. The comparison of sex ratios for the urban and the rural area was 27.0 and 35.0 respectively. As a result, it is urgent to facilitate the policies with regard to the health and medicare services particularly with the welfare system for the aged, according to the rapid growth of the population of the aged.
