Abstract
Metal contamination of estuarine and coastal marine areas is an increasing problem in the Chinhae Bay System and elsewhere as urbanization extends into previously undeveloped area. To investigate the concentrations and transport pattern of metals, sediments, seawater and oysters were taken from 4 substudy areas in January, 1995. Sediment samples were analyzed for total contents of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel, lead and zinc by ICP-MS. As a result, cadmium, chromium, copper and zinc showed maximum concentrations at the innermost parts of the Masan Bay and apparent pattern from innermost parts to outer. Waterway SN and WE, whereas, represented different trend of metal concentration distribution each metal. Interpretation of anthropogenic metal concentrations has been hampered by the fact that natural metal concentrations in sediments vary by orders of magnitude in different sediments. Therefore, normalization of metal concentrations to a reference element, aluminum was done. The results exhibited that the concentrations of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc were increased by anthropogenic contamination in the Masan Bay. The concentrations of arsenic were lain farthest from the natural range in all study areas. Total concentrations of cadmium, cobalt, copper, nickel, lead and zinc in seawater were calculated as the sum of dissolved concentrations by AAS and particulate concentrations by ICP-MS. The concentrations distribution of cadmium, cobalt, lead and nickel showed high concentration and somewhat gradient distribution from innermost parts to outer in only the Masan Bay. Total metal concentrations in seawater, however, did not present apparent pattern like sediments in the other study areas. Oyster samples were analyzed for the concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, manganese, nickel, lead and zinc by the use of ICP-MS. The metal concentrations in oysters didn't show similar pattern of sediments and seawater except zinc. This result can be considered by the loss of contaminant or contamination during shucking, the season of sampling, the age of samples, depuration and effects of the metal concentration in sediments and seawater. Also, the concentrations of zinc in oysters were one or three order higher than them of other heavy metals because zinc was accumulated in the form of detoxified zinc pyrophosphate comparing to other metals. The degree of correlation between environmental variables and biological factors was considered as the index of bioavailability. Metal concentrations in oysters and particulate phase of seawater were divided by the corresponding concentrations in dissolved phase of seawater to obtain the bioconcentration ratio (BCR) and metal partitioning ratio (MPR), respectively. Bioconcentration factor (BCF), which was the metal concentrations in oyster divided by the corresponding total concentrations in seawater, presented most close relationship with environmental variables. It can be concluded that total metal concentrations in seawater were more bioavailable to oysters than metal concentrations in only dissolved or particulate phase.
