The novel is a genre of literature of which students and teachers alike consider indispensible. Despite that fact, the efforts to convey the literal value of the novel in an effectively educational way have been insubstantial in the long run. Therefore, this study, through studies of literature and also through surveys, attempted to fully understand both the Fifth Educational Step and the current Sixth Educational Step in order to find a solution which would minimize certain flaws in a logical and effective way. The following is a summerization of the study, which was done by genre. In the second chapter, through considerations of headings related to novels and analysis of the novels in student textbooks(headings and textbooks both of the Fifth and Sixth Step), the study attempted to understand and fully realize the current status of education of literature in middle school. The study offered the following conclusions. (1)Despite the fact that the relative importance of education of literature is shifting towards the appreciation of the artistic validity of the novel itself, the methods of the education of correct appreciation are dissatisfying, and also, encouragement of class participation is not being conducted realistically. (2)The arrangement of novels in textbooks should be diverse in period, and such novels should have defined and complete personality and settings that are familier to students. Such novels should be suggested through preferences of students and teachers. In the third chapter, the study attempted to analyze the actual condition of contemporary novels in student textbooks through a survey conducted on students and Korean Language teachers of various middle schools in the Kyoung-gi province. In the fourth chapter the conclusions drawn from the survey material are presented. First of all, both students and teachers show high approval of novels in textbooks and the majority of both parties enjoy novels outside the classroom. Therefore, a teacher should use such an advantage by creating various methods through study of novels to accomplish educational goals. Second, both students and teachers show dissatisfaction of the material in textbooks, citing the novels as being unrealistic or too obviously moralistic in subject. More flexible material is being asked of the compilation committee. Third, the teachers often do not set up systematic and driven goals for the students, and the students in turn are often misled. A complete understanding of the goals by both teachers and students is needed and the definition of goals should be made with the participation of the students. Fourth, despite complete understanding of the novels by the teachers, many seemed to fail in getting the point across in an actual classroom. There should be a model made on the appreciation of literature, references that could be used directly in the classroom should be developed, and teaching methods on association should be developed, so the education can be used on novels outside the textbooks as well. Finally, different interpretations of the same novel should be encouraged in the classroom. To do so, analysis of the novels should be centered on the teachers whereas the appreciation of novels should be centered on the students. Also, evaluation on the general knowledge of novels should be done objectively, whereas the evaluation on understanding and appreciation of the novels should be done subjectively.;소설은 장르의 특성상 학생과 교사 모두가 가장 선호하는 문학의 한 분야로, 그러한 소설이 중학교에서 청소년들에게 학습의 교재로 사용되었을때 그 문학적 가치를 바로 전달하고 교육적 효과를 극대화하기 위한 다양한 노력이 필요함에도 현실적으로는 소홀했던 감이 없지 않다.
