일상성과 상상력을 함유한 물성 표현

Abstract

A variety of definitions of "arts" have emerged since 1980's. this trend resulted in not only more degrees of freedom but also disorder and sense of instability to each individual. As a result, in these days rather than having one prevalent paradigm, various definitions of "arts" are being pursued and experimented than ever. Artists, including the author, are experiencing conflicts between the desire to be aboriginal and the desire to stay safely within the territory of convenyions. This is often referred to as transitional conflict from modernism. Post-modernism is perceived not only as anti-modernism but also as an extension to modernism. The author understands that allegory and symbols are two concepts that gave rise to post-modernistic understanding of works of art. Therefore, the notion of allegory and symbols are extensively exploited through out this work. In this work, inspiration from routine objects and material properties along with other various effects lead us to interpret the work in an allegorical sense; as texts are overlapped and meant to develop in allegory likewise. Invoking routine objects is regarded as introducing a symbol from the viewpoint of that. Symbols can be understood in different significances in the context of transition. In conclusion, this work attempted to recognize extraordinariness from routine experiences of daily life and suggested notion of symbols and allegory as important factors of a work. In this work, routine objects and experiences (whether experienced or possible to be experienced) are not reproduced by illusions but re-created as a newly recognizable meaning and further display beyond what expressed or created. "Physical properties" play an important role here by producing tension between the intended and the unintended. It is noticeable that unexpected effects are encountered when matching new materials; and often these effects could be important guidances for developing ideas for the work. It was "the most generic feature" of a material that the author sought for in order to express the routines that are not routine anymore. This work consists of ideological review and methodological study. The former observes the importance of material properties, notion of symbols, and allegory. Symbols and material properties include ordinaries and imagination and allegory conforms to the whole work. The latter deals with effects and feasibilities of utilized material and the resulted literalness of the work. ;오늘의 예술에 대한 정의는 다양하다. 1980년 이후 활발히 전개된 이러한 양상은 개개인에게 예술에 대한 자유를 가져다 주었지만 그에 따른 혼란과 불안도 함께 가져다 주었다. 하나의 사조나 흐름이 세계를 주도할 수는 없게 되었고 부여된 자유에 따라 많은 경향이 공존하고 있다. 이러한 다원적 상황 속에서 본인이 추구하고 있는 '예술'이라는 것은 자유와 불안, 구속과 안정이라는 사이에서 갈등을 겪고 있다. -독특한 개성을 발휘하고 싶은 욕구와 체제 속에 안주하고 싶어하는 욕구 사이에서. 어쨌든 '포스트 모더니즘(post-modernism)'이라고 대변 될수 있는 현 상황은 모더니즘에서 포스트 모더니즘으로의 이행을 보여준다. 이때의 포스트 모더니즘이란 반 모더니즘적 성격 뿐만 아니라 그 속에 지속의 의미 또한 내포하고 있다. 이에 본인은 모더니즘에서 포스트 모더니즘으로 이행에서 다시 부각된 알레고리(Allegory)와 기호의 개념을 통해 본인의 작품을 해석하고자 한다. 본인의 작품 속에 등장하는 일상적 경험의 차용과 물성적 경향, 만들어진 것 이외의 보여지는 것들 모두는 하나의 텍스트가 다른 또 하나의 텍스트에 의해 중첩되는 알레고리적 상황으로 해석될 수 있다. 또 일상적 대상의 차용에 관하여서는 그것을 해체주의에 입각한 기호로 받아들이고 있다. 이때의 기호는 원래의 대상의 이미지에서 멀어져 또 다른 것을 의미할 수 있는 상황을 함축한다. 즉 본인은 하나의 접근 방식보다는 다양한 양상이 공존하는 현상황 속에서 본인의 일상적 경험을 바탕으로 하여 작업의 출발점을 찾아 볼수 있었고, 그 작품의 해석에 있어 기호와 알레고리는 작품의 중요한 요소로서 작품의 가능성을 제시해 주고 있다고 보았다. 주변에서 겪을수 있는, 또 겪은 일상적인 경험들은 본인 작품의 계기로 본인에게 큰 의미를 가져다 주고 있는데, 그리하여 '물성'이 강조된 재료들을 일상적 경험을 환기시키는 대상으로 제시하고자 한다. 즉 일루젼(illusion)적 재현을 의미하는 것이 아니라 하나의 새로운 대상으로서 그 해석의 가능성을 지니며 만들어진 것 이상의 것을 보여 주고자 하였다. '물성'은 여기서 아주 중요한 역할을 하는데 의도된 것과 의도되지 않은 것 사이의 긴장감을 통해 작품에 새로운 가능성을 부여한다고 본다. 특히 새로운 재료와 재료의 만남에 있어 예기치 못한 상황이 연출됨에 따라 그것이 작품의 방향을 유도하는 중요한 길잡이가 되기도 했다. 이때 본인이 중요하게 생각한 것은 그 재료가 가지는 '가장 중요한 특성'에 관한 것으로 작품은 그것을 드러냄으로 해서 일상적인 것을 일상적이지 않게 하는 그 무엇이 된다. 본 논문은 제작 논문으로서 내용적 측면과 방법적 측면으로 나누어져 있다. 내용적 연구에서는 일상성과 상상력을 함유한 물성과 다의성을 함축한 기호로서의 작품, 총체적 작품으로서의 알레고리에 대해 살펴보고자 하며, 방법적 연구에서는 본인이 다루고 있는 재료가 지닌 가능성과 효과, 그리고 그 결과로 보여지는 작품의 실제성(literality)에 대해 다루고자 한다. 끝으로 본인의 작품을 제시, 분석 설명함으로써 지금까지의 작업에 대한 반성과 함께 앞으로의 작업방향을 모색해 보고자 한다.
