촛불의 이미지를 통한 표현 연구

Abstract

촛불은 예로부터 스스로를 태워 빛을 발하는 과정에서 인간에게 다양한 의미로 상징되어 왔으며, 어둠 속에서 흔들리는 촛불의 신비한 빛은 인간을 쉽게 몰입시키고, 이에 따라 感情移入, 回想, 想像力, 暝想 등의 인간의 의식활동은 顯現해 진다. 본 연구는 어릴 적 느꼈던 촛불의 신비로운 힘에 대한 회상과 더불어 촛불의 이미지에 대한 관심으로부터 출발하였다. 예술창작에 있어 사물의 外的 형태에 대한 이미지는 예술가의 내적세계를 상징적으로 표현하는 소재가 되어 왔으며 이러한 사물로써, 시간의 경과에 따라 외형의 변화를 특징으로 한 촛불의 이미지를 조형적으로 가시화 해 볼 필요가 있다. 연구의 목적은 촛불의 외형적 특성과 시간의 推移에 따른 소멸과정에서 사유된 이미지를 가시화하는데 있다. 연구의 내용은 사물과 상징에 대한 이론을 살펴보고 촛불의 이미지가 인간의 내면세계를 상징하게 된 기원과 경위에 대한 서술과 촛불의 조형성이 갖는 상징적 의미를 이론적 배경으로 다루었다. 표현에 있어서는 촛불의 외형적 존재방식에서 사유된 시간과 공간의 이미지, 수직의 이미지를 내용으로 하여 초의 형상의 변형과 상징적 표현방법으로 조형화하였으며 분석대상으로 7점의 작품을 제시하였다. 작품분석은 표현내용에 따라 조형적 관점에서 이루어 졌다. 연구의 방법은 문헌 조사와 작품제작 및 분석을 기본도구로 하였으며, 이 내용에 관한 22점의 사진을 목적 표출하였다. 작품표현에 있어 촛불의 이미지는 사유, 직관, 통찰, 상상력, 회상등의 주관주의적 인식 방법에 따라 탐구하고 이를 조형화하였다. 연구대상으로 제작된 7점의 작품은 정서적 의미를 서술하고 조형적으로 분석하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 촛불의 외적 형태를 통해 변형된 수직적 요소는 상승성과 하강성을 띠며, 이를 통해 인간의 의지의 도약, 내적 존재의 비상과 상승 또는 침체와 하락의 상징적 이미지가 가시화되었다. 둘째, 기화현상에 의한 초의 소멸흔적은 새로운 공간을 형성하며 물리적, 심리적 시간을 내제한다. 이에 따른 시간의 이미지는 陰과 陽의 요철에 의한 量의 결합이나, 융해, 융기,마모, 돌출 등에 의한 양의 移動등으로 구성함으로써 시간의 연속성, 순환성의 이미지가 가시화 되었다. 셋째, 촛불의 공간성은 초의 원형태의 소멸흔적에 의해 특징되며, 이에따른 이미지는 '無'와 무한한 존재로의 승화된 형상이란 상징성이 가시적으로 조형화되었다.;For a long time a candle that bums itself has been recognized with various meanings. Its mystic light that sways in darkness easily drives people to be immersed into contemplation. It also actively stimulates the human consciousness which inclues empathy, reflection, imagination, meditation,- and other thinking processes. As creating art projects the external shape of objects produces a unique image, and this image presents row materials that symbolically express the internal world of artists. The significance of this search is found in utilizing these row materials as a concrete basis that epicts the ever-changing external shape of the candle-light, depending on the enduring time-elapse. The purpose of this research is found in formating the image which arises from the external shape of as well as the extinguishing process of the candle-light. The content of this research examines the followings: First, theoretical espects of objects and symbols Second, an origin and a routine of the image of the candle-light that turns out to symbolize the internal nature of human beings Third, a symbolic meaning of the candle-light's shape Fourth, time-wide and space-wide images, and vertical images that are caused from the altering shape of the candle-light Fifth, an emotional meaning of expression Sixth, a formative analysis of seven projects that are presented in this research. The method of this research consists of investigating documents as well as producing and analyzing art works. Twenty-two photographs that are related with this research are attached . In order to emphasize artistic details of the projects, the contents are dealt with a subjective image that mainly manifests personal imagination and reminiscence. The seven projects are formatively analyzed, especially, in their representation. The result of this research is as follows; First, the projects' vertical character which is metamorphosed through the external shape of the candle-light, has a duality, namely, upwardness and downwardness. These upwardness and downwardness represent symbolic images of a leap of human's will, flight and ascension of internal existence, and stagnation and descent of internal existence. Second, newly formed space through the evaporation of the candle is limited by the time-character. Thus, time-wide image has aspects of continuation and recurrence through the volumetric weld of Yin and Yang as well as the volumetric migration of fusion, protuberance, abrasion, and protrusion. Third, the spatial character of the candle-light is signified through the extinguishing trace of the candle. The resultant image highlights symbolic configurations of nothingness and infinite existence.
