슬릿(slit)을 이용한 피스(piece)조립에 관한 연구

Abstract

Modem fiber arts tend to develop with various changes of form and substance. With various materials and techniques and through technical studies and experimental spirits, we can freely make forms and textural expressions. Furthermore, we can grant another new concepts of space through active using of spaces for installation freed ourselves from fixed dimensional forms. Attempts to cast off the conventional genres are prevalent nowadays so the area of fiber arts becomes broad than ever extending and developing into another fields of arts. Among these expressional ways of fiber arts, slit and piece plaiting makes diverse plane compositions and three dimensional changes of form possible. The purpose of this study is to investigate certain expressional methods for fabricating pieces with slits. For this study, concepts and characteristics of slit, piece and plaiting should be defined. Therefore, I included photographs of works come under cach three of them in this study. In actual making, at first I weaved a base to have a slit and then fabricated belt like pieces through it. And by using the plaiting technique, I fabricated pieces into a slanting direction or by three units. In the last work, I made use of the power of fabrication to explore three-dimensional forms. And I attained a result through these piece fabrications with slits as follows ; First, by using slits, fabricating was easier than ever and creation of relief forms for granting spatial effects was possible. Second, after using plaiting techniques, textures became more compact. Third, the spatial sensation by regular plaitings gives illusion effects of vision.;현대 섬유예술은 바우하우스(Bauhaus) 이후 미술과 기술의 새로운 통합이라 는 이념 아래 공예적인 개념에서 탈피하여 미적가치를 중요시하는 예술성을 지닌 작품으로 발전하게 되었다. 이러한 섬유예술은 재료나 기법의 다양화와 작가의 실험정신으로 형태와 질감표현등을 자유롭게 표현하게 되었고, 형식과 내용면에서도 많은 발전을 보이게 되었다. 또한 일정한 차원 형식을 벗어나 설치공간에 대한 적극적인 도입으로 새로운 공간개념을 부여하게 되었다. 20세기 초 입체파 화가들의 꼴라쥬 기법에서 시작된 탈 장르의 시도는 이제 보편화 되어가고 있으며 그로 인한 섬유예술의 범위도 점점 더 널어지고 있다. 섬유 고유의 유연하며 가변적인 성질과 기법은 환경이나 건축, 조각, 회화 등 여러 영역의 예술 분야로 확산·개발되어 가고 있다. 이러한 섬유예술의 표현방법 중에서 슬릿(Slit)과 피스(Piece)조립에 의한 작품은 다양한 화면구성과 부조적인 표현을 가능하게 한다. 이에 본 연구는 타피스트리 기법중 하나인 슬릿을 이용하여 피스들이 서로 엮이는 형태로 조립되는 표현방법을 연구하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이 연구를 위해 이론적 배경으로 슬릿, 피스, 플레이팅(Plaiting) 각각의 개념과 특성을 고찰할 필요가 있으며 그에 해당하는 작품사진을 함께 수록하였다. 작품제작에 있어서는 위빙(Weaving)을 이용해 슬릿이 있는 바탕을 제작하여 그 사이로 띠 형태의 피스들을 조립하였다. 피스 조립의 방법에 있어서는 바스켓트리(Basketry) 등에 많이 사용되는 플레이팅기법을 이용하여 두 단위의 요소 또는 세 단위의 요소로 플레이팅 시켰다. 마지막 작품에서는 서로 엮이는 힘을 이용하여 3차원적인 형태를 모색해 보았다. 이러한 슬릿을 이용한 피스들이 플레이팅되는 제작을 통해 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 피스를 조립하는데 있어 슬릿을 사용하였더니 조립이 용이하였고 공간적 효과를 주는 부조적인 형태의 재구성이 가능하였다. 플레이팅기법의 사용은 조직을 짜임새있게 하였으며, 규칙적인 플레이팅에 의해서 착시효과를 보이게 하였다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 두 가지 이상의 기법을 혼합하는 작품의 발전 가능성과 시각적 효과의 활용이 연구와 실험에 의해 더욱 발전되도록 해야 할 것이다.
