일상적 도상의 병치에 나타난 현대인의 상황

Abstract

Today's world is becoming more complex and diverse each day. The present age has become a period monopolized by capitalistic industrialism and controlled by technology. Modern people carry on their lives amidst a flood of information and events. A conflict among classes and an alienation caused by excessive industrialism is at the root of condition of a society. Moreover, with the development of mass media, it has become possible to reproduce images in large quantities and circulate them extensively. Consequently, there has been a change in the concept of artistic culture. Whether this phenomenon is accepted positively or a critical attitude toward it is assumed, artists reflect the times they belong to. Positive responses to mass culture appeared first in pop art. The aggressive borrowing from mass media, which has become a common point of departure within pop art, is viewed as a desirable phenomenon reflecting modern society. Therefore, art and the general public should come to a mutual understanding and rapport. One of the characteristics of modern mass culture is that it incorporates image and sign extensively while in the past mainly symbols were used. In this study, the reality of the phenomenon of mass culture is shown more closely by using a letter text which focuses on symbols and image text on one picture. In this attempt, letter and image of contrasting natures were sometimes arranged on one picture, while juxtapositions of modernistic characteristics evident in abstract painting and image borrowed from mass media were also used in order to express the post-modernistic phenomenon in this period. As a means of effectively expressing reproduction, plurality, and uniformity which are properties of modern culture, a photo copier was used, and by doing so, the feeling of alienation of a modern people were expressed more dramatically. Lastly, by presenting and analyzing the work, some light was thrown on the course of painting in the period of mass media should take in the future.;오늘날의 세계는 나날이 복잡해지고 다원화되어 간다. 현대는 산업 주의와 과학 기술의 점유 하에 놓이는 시대가 되었다. 현대인들은 쏟아지는 정보와 각종 사건들에 둘러 쌓여서 삶을 영위하고 있으며, 고도의 산업화로 말미암아 계층간의 갈등과 자아의 소외현상 등이 사회의 저변에 깔리는 상황 속에 살게 되었다. 또한 대중매체의 발달에 따라 형상을 다량으로 복제하고 복제된 형상을 광범위하게 유통할 수 있게 되었으며 이로 말미암아 미술 문화의 개념도 변질되기에 이르렀다. 이러한 대중문화의 현상을 긍정적으로 수용하든 이에 대한 비판적 태도를 취하든 간에 미술가들은 자신이 속한 시대의 상황을 반영한다. 대중문화에 대한 긍정적 반응이 미술에 나타났던 것은 팝 아트에서이다. 팝 아트를 시발점으로 하여 보편화된 대중매체의 적극적인 차용은 현대 사회를 반영하고자 하는 미술의 전형적인 증후로 보여지며, 이를 통해 미술과 대중은 의사 소통과 상호간의 교감을 지향하여 왔다. 현대 대중문화의 특징 중 하나는, 과거의 문화가 상징을 주로 사용한 것에 반해, 생산되는 그 산물을 도상과 지표로서 광범위하게 사용한다는 점이다. 본인의 작업에서는 이 시대의 흥미로운 현상으로 떠오르는 상징 위주의 문자적 요소와 도상적 요소를 한 화면 속에 배치시킴으로써 대중문화의 상황하에 놓여진 현실이 보다 가까이 느껴질 수 있도록 하였다. 그 시도로서 이질적인 형태를 가진 언어와 도상을 한 화면에 배치시키기도 하고, 모더니즘적 속성을 드러내는 추상화면과 대중매체에서 차용된 도상을 병치시켜 현대의 포스트모던적 상황을 나타내고자 하였다. 현대 문화의 속성인 복제성, 다수성, 획일성 등을 효과적으로 표현하는 방법으로 기계적인 복제방법을 사용했고 여기에서 현대인의 소외 의식을 더 극적으로 나타내려 하였다. 끝으로 본인의 작품을 제시 분석함으로써 대중매체 시대의 회화가 나아갈 바를 조명해 보고자 하였다.
