Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean women's decoding and interpretation of quiz shows. The quiz show is one of the main television genres and very popular with female audience but it has been neglected in the mainstream of media studies. While most media studies have focused on the non-fictional form of news or on fictional soap operas, little attention has been paid to quiz shows. This study is concerned with how women are reading and interpreting the text of quiz shows and generating pleasures from the quiz show viewing. The theoretical framework is based on audience reception theory which emphasizes viewer's active reading. Existing studies regarding television quiz shows are focused mainly on textual analysis, ignoring that audience can actively generate various meanings from the texts. In these message-based perspectives, the relationship of mass media and audience is considered as one-way communication. and audience are assumed to be passive and guided by dominant ideology. However, viewers can read media text differently according to their social conditions and desires by either accepting or refusing the dominant ideology within the text. This study examines the way how women are reading and interpreting television quiz show text using "Altulsarrim-Jangman Quiz" broadcasted by sbs-TV. The problems inverstigated in this study are as follows: First, what are the inscribed dominant ideologies and how are they constructed in the quiz show? Second, how are women reading and interpreting quiz shows? Third, why are the different interpretations generated? Fourth, what do the quiz show viewing practices mean in relation to women's social reality? In other words, how are watching quiz shows used by women in response to their social positioning? This study is composed of two parts; text analysis and audience analysis. Text analysis is made up of narrative analysis and ideological analysis, and ethnographic interviewing method was used to analyze women's reception of quiz shows. Text analysis revealed that the quiz shows are ideologically constructed. It is found that the ideologies such as capitalism, patriarchism, and the myth of knowledge and education are interweaved within the text. Quiz shows naturalize women's subjection to patriarchic/capitalistic order. It renders the women "in the home" as consumers and family managers by preying on women's fear of alienation and desperation at being "left out" of society and the productive economy, and on their denied recognition for the work they do in the home. The result of reception analysis showed that on the while dominant ideologies are preferred in women's reading the text, at the same time they are criticized and questioned by the women viewers. Most women audiences accept and acknowledge their low positions inscribed within the text as their existing social condition. At the same time they tend to resist and refuse their regressive positions. Quiz shows offer women a possiblity to acceess public sphere to from which they have been traditionally and socially restricted. Women tend to use quiz shows as a way of symbolic rebellion against social regression by proving their ability and achieving public recognition. In this way, women take pleasures from quiz shows in their own way that reflects their condition of life, their desires and needs, and also their views on life in general. In conclusion, women actively participate in the signifying process by way of interpreting various cultural signs and creating cultural meanings, rather than merely consuming signs. However, all of them do not necessarily have the tendency for resistance. Although resistance to dominant ideology is relatively limited and trivial, in women's life resistant reading have tramendous symbolic meaning.
