무용 예술에서의 페미니즘 연구

Abstract

성(性)이란 가장 복합적이고도 밀도짙게 사회적, 개인적 의미를 지니며 우리의 생활을 지배한다고 할 수 있다. 인류 역사를 고찰해 보면 오랫동안 우리 사회를 지배해 왔던 남성에 의한 여성의 성(性) 차별이 존속해 있음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 뿌리깊은 성(性) 차별에 대한 여성들의 깨어있는 움직임이 바로 페미니즘 운동이다. 일반적으로 여권주의라 알려져 있는 페미니즘 운동은 범세계적인 여성들의 권리와 자유를 찾기 위한 흐름으로 풀이되며, 남성과 여성에 대한 우리의 인식을 서서히 바꾸어 놓고 있다. 19세기말에서 20세기초에 일어났던 근대무용혁명을 살펴보면, 무용에서의 여권주의적 시각을 찾아볼 수 있다. 그 이유로 현대무용이 최초로 여성들에 의해 양육되고 잉태되었던 것처럼 크게 발레와 사회전체속의 남성 우월에 대한 저항 반응의 일부분으로 나타났기 때문이다. 본 논문의 목적은 이러한_초기 여성현대무용가들의 활동과 그 역사를 연구해 봄으로써 무용에서의_페미니즘적_시각을 분석해 내는 것이다. 그리 하여 무용에서의 여성이 지니는 예술적, 문화사적 가치를 분석해 내는 것이다. 사실 오늘날 춤에 있어 무용이 여성과 따로 떼어내어 설명할 수 없을 만큼 여성화되어있음에도 불구하고 ‘여성 의식’이 거의 부재함이 드러나고 있는 현시대에 이러한 연구는 매우 가치가 있다 하겠다. 따라서 본 논문은 무용예술에서의 여성을 바라보는 하나의 관점을 마련하기에 앞서 페미니즘이라는 여성적 시각과 여성의 성(性) 이미지에 대해 연구해 보았다. 또 20세기초 등장한 현대무용의 탄생을 중심으로 무용에서 나타난 페미니즘적 흐름에 대해서 연구해 보았다. 그리고 무용작품에서의 페미니즘적 요소를 추출해 내기 위하여 미국현대무용계를 대표해 왔던 마사 그라함(Martha Graham)의 작품을 분석하여 여성무용수의 이미지, 역할과 여권주의적 관점에 대하여 연구하였다. 로이 플러(Loie Fuller, 1862-1928), 이사도라 던컨(Isadora Duncan, 1878-1927), 루스 세인트 데니스(Ruth St. Denis, 1880-1968), 마리 뷔그만(Mary Wigman, 1886-1973) 그리고 마사 그라함(Martha Graham, 1984-1991)으로 이루어지는 초기 여성현대무용가들의 활동은 여성해방운동의 한 노력으로 평가되고 있다. 그들은 여권주의자들과 비슷한 방식으로 다양한 여성상과 신체미에 대한 인식 그리고 남성들로부터의 일탈을 보여주었다. 또한 그들은 당시의 남성중심의 사회속에서 여성 안무가, 무용수로써 사회, 문화적 관습에 도전을 하며 자립화를 이루었으며, 교육과 건강에 대한 인식을 높여 주었다. 이들중에서도 마사 그라함은 180여편의 다양한 작품세계를 통해 여성의 힘과 권력을 보여주었고, 여성들의 행동하는 이미지를 심어 주었다. 그라함은 여성의 관점에서 바라본 역사를 재조명하여 여성주체의 사건들을 해석하는 작품을 많이 만들었다. 비록 남성과 여성이 평등할 수 있다는 점을 찾지못했던 점과 스스로 남성에 의해 사랑의 피해자가 됨으로써 침해당하고 상처받은 모습이 작품에 반영되었다는 점이 한계로 남아있기는 하지만, 그녀가 지닌 여성의 가치와 우월성에 대한 인식은 높이 평가되어질 것이다. 오늘날의 무용은 남성과 여성의 평등함 그리고 성(性) 역할의 반전등 다향한 성(性)에 대한 묘사와 주제를 보여주고 있다. 무대위에서 펼쳐지는 두 성(性)의 싸움은 관객들의 관심을 불러일으키고 있다. 사회적, 문화적으로 성(性)의 표현으로 꼭 필요한 것이다. 또한 남성주심의 사회속에서 잊혀져가는 여성무용가들의 역사에 관한 연구도 계속해서 이루어져여 할 것이다.;Human history shows that there has always been the sexual discrimination against women by men who have ruled each society. The movement of feminism has been created to solve this deep- ooted sexual discrimination. In general, the movement of feminism, known for womanism, can be understood as a voice of women from all over the world for their freedom and rights. Modern dance revolution in the late 19th and early 20th century shows the feministic views in dance. Modern dance, originally created and developed by women, has been born as part of reaction against a classical dance, ballet, and the superiority of men. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the feministic view studying the activities of modern women dancers and its history, in which I'd like to analyze the importance of women's role in dance. In fact, today although dance has been very womanized, nowhere can be found "the their voice". That's why I chose this topic to study. The following is the study for a womanistic view, generally considered feminism, and the image of the female to build a view in the art of dance. I also studied the feminism shown in dance from the emergence of modern dance. To draw the feministic element in the works of dance, I analyzed the works of Martha Graham and studied the image of women dancers, their roles and the feministic view. There are many modern dancers to be considered as an activists for the feminism, among whom are Loie Fuller, 1862-1928, Isadora Duncan,1878-1927, Ruth ST. Denis, 1880-1968, Mary Wigman, 1886- 1973, and Martha Graham, 1984-1991. Among them, Martha Graham made about 180 works showing the women's power with the feministic view toward the world. Though she found that men and women couldn't be equal, Her recognition for the women's values and their superiority will be highly evaluated. Today's dance shows the equality of men and women and the change of sex role, and so on, which are the main themes in most of the modern works. Today the sexual discrimination has been socially, culturally challenged so there must be the proper description of sex. In addition, it should be achieved to study the disappearing-modern women dancers in the men-dominated society. It should be kept in mind that, when men and women go hand in hand through the correct recognition of history, dance can be developed into an art.
