類比推理의 類型과 基準

Abstract

이 글은 비형식추리의 하나인 유비추리가 보여주는 인간사고의 비결정적인 측면을 검토하려는 의도에서 쓰여졌다. 인간이 사고하는 과정은 합리적이고 결정적인 절차에 의해서만 진행되는 것은 아니다. 인간의 사고과정에는 합리적이지도 결정적이지도 않은 측면이 있다. 이러한 특성은 형식논리의 체계로만은 설명할 수 없는 측면이다. 그러나 지금까지 추리의 유형은 그 엄밀성으로 인해 연역논리를 기준으로 하여 분류되어 왔다. 연역논리를 기준으로 하여 그러한 엄밀하고 불변하는 체계를 가지지 못하는 추리유형은 모두 귀납추리의 유형으로 간주해왔다. 이러한 형식논리를 기준으로한 분류방식은 비연역논리의 영역을 하나의 유형으로 묶어 버리고 그 각각의 특성이나 기준들을 제대로 정리하지 못한 이유가 되었다. 이제 이 논문에서는 비형식논리의 하나인 유비추리의 유형과 기준을 살펴봄으로써 형식체계가 아닌 영역에도 나름의 판단기준과 구조가 있다는 것을 보이려는 것이다. 그럼으로써 비형식논리 영역에 속하는 추리유형을 정리하는 하나의 정지작업을 시도하는 것이다. 우리의 가장 일반적인 추론의 대부분은 유비적인 사고방식에 의하여 진행된다. 새로운 상황을 이해하기 위하여 기존의 지식을 통합하는 논리를 유비추리라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 유비추리는 실용적인 방식으로 이해되어야 한다. 유비추리는 지식의 구체적인 내용과 밀접하게 연관되는 것이고 그것이 일어난 상황에 크게 영향을 받기 때문이다. 이러한 특성을 고려하여 유비추리의 유형과 판단기준을 정리하였다. 유비추리는 설명에 쓰이는 것과 문제해결에 쓰이는 유형을 중심으로 해서 그 각각을 다시 적용되는 영역(domain)을 기준으로 하여 4가지로 분류하였으며, 사례를 들어서 다시 설명하였다. 그리고, 유비추리의 판단기준이 되는 유사성은 심층적인 것과 표면적인 것으로 나누어 진다. 단순한 속성들간의 유사성만을 고려하는 것만으로 유비추리의 유용성이 드러나기 어렵다. 오히려 표면적인 유사성만을 고려할 경우 유비추리의 오용사례가 되기 쉽다. 그리하여 유용하게 사용된 유비추리는 표면적인 유사성이외에도 관계들간의 상위 관계를 고려하는 것이다. 이러한 작업을 통하여 남은 과제는 지각(perception)과정등의 비명제적인 차원에서도 사용되는 것으로 보이는 유비추리의 특성을 인지과학적인 자료를 이용하여 연구하는 것이다.;The purpose of this dissertation is to elucidate the nondecisional aspects of human cognition revealed by analogical reasoning. The process of human cognition is proceeded not only by decisional method or formal logic. The nondecisional aspect of cognition can not explained by system of deductive logic. So it is necessary that we investigate the informal logic to explain the nondecisional aspects of cognition. Especially, analogical reasoning is a fundamental component of the informal logic and tool for thought. The realization that a problematical domain (the target) is analogous to another more familiar domain (the source) can enable a thinker to reach a better understanding of the target domain by transporting knowledge from the source domain. And Analogical reasoning must be understood practically rather than purely syntactically, and that both finding and using analogies depend on appropriate use of synchronic and diachronic rules. In recent years, analogical reasoning have received increasing attention from cognitive scientists. This growth of interest is related to the realization that human reasoning does net always operate on the basis of content-free general inference rules, rather is often tied to particular bodies of knowledge and is greatly influenced by the context in which it occurs. Of course, we should emphasize that none of the mechanism of analogical transfer offers any guarantee that the target problem will be sloved successfully or that the new rules generated will be useful ones. Nonetheless, analogical reasoning is an especially powerful process on plausible sources of new ideas for which any other methods had no progress at all.
