한국무용극 주제에 관한 분석

Abstract

Though Korean Dance Theatre has reformed and improved in quality since the dance festival was held in 1970s. limitations of subjed have been constantly pointed out. The purpose of this study is to analyze the subjects of current Korean Dance Theatre and to presene more developmental prospects. As the method of the study, I classified chronologically the subjects of works of National Dance Troupe that has leaded Korean Dance Theatre from 1960s to 1980s. In this classification system, the subjects of Korean Dance Theatre are devided into 4 types roughly and its characteristics are studied. In 1960s Korean Dance Theatre dealed with traditional and local subjects mostly, in 1970s, introduced remarkably the subjects of literary works, and in 1980s. expressed all kinds of the subjects about legend, literature, history and reality. Accordingly the subjects of Korean Dance Theatre can be classified into 4 types on the whole: traditional subject, literary subject, historical subject and realistic subject. The result of this study is as follows, The first, Korean Dance Theatre of 1960s that arose since 1930s was pointed out for its uniform traditional subject. In 1970s Korean Dance Theatre showed open attitude using literary works in order to avoid transcendent subject. These trial widened the range of 1980's various subjects. The second, as the analysis of works by the subjects, the traditional subject represents the cultivation of korean emotion and creation of oriental image, the literary represents extension of subject matter of dance drama, historical subject represents the preparation of foundation of human development as remembrance of past era, and realistic subject represents community life through the reflection of current situation. The third, the most remarkable characteristic of the subjects of Korean Dance Theatre is the way of thinking about heaven, earth and man, and promotion of virtue and reproval of vice. Though it is assessed as succession of tradition, it is pointed out as a problem of stereotyped subject. It is true that our dance drama has made rapid progress since 1960s but it is hard to say that the dance drama completely breaks from the traditional way of thinking. In order to make a good progress of Korean Dance Theatre, Choreographers should have artistic talent and philosophical sense about the import of dance.;한국무용극은 1970년대 무용제가 개최되면서 새로운 모습으로 변화함과 동시에 질적인 향상을 가져오지만 주제의 한계성에 대한 지적이 끊임없이 대두되어 왔다. 본 논문은 한국무용극이 현재 다루고 있는 주제를 분석하여 보다 발전적인 방향제시에 그 목적이 있다. 연구방법은 1960년대부터 1980년대까지 한국무용극을 주도해 온 국립무용단의 작품을 대상으로, 주제가 어떻게 전개되고 있는가를 시대별로 분류해 보았다. 이 분류방법을 통해 한국무용극의 주제를 크게 4가지로 나누어 그 특성을 살펴보았다. 즉, 1960년대 한국무용극은 대부분 우리의 전래적 이야기나 향토색 짙은 주제를 다루었고 1970년대는 문학을 도입하는 양상이 두드러졌으며 1980년대는 전설·문학·역사·현실적인 문제 모두를 작품에서 표현하고 있었다. 따라서 한국무용극의 주제는 주로 전설ㆍ설화적인 주제, 문학적인 주제, 역사적인 주제, 현실적인 주제 등 크게 4가지로 분류할 수 있었다. 이와 같은 방법으로 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 1930년대를 기점으로 활발하게 행해했던 한국무용극은 1960년대까지 전통적인 주제를 획일성으로 문제점을 지적 받았다. 1970년대는 고답적인 주제를 탈피하기 위해 문학작품을 주제로 사용하여 개방적인 태도도 보여 주었는데, 이러한 시도는 1980년대에 와서 다양한 주제들을 통해 이야기의 폭을 넓혀 가고 있었다. 둘째, 주제 별 작품 분석에서 전설·설화적인 주제는 한국적 정서 함양과 동양적 이미지 창출, 문학적인 주제는 무용극의 소재확대, 역사적인 주제는 지난 시대의 되새김의 작업으로 인류발전의 초석 마련, 현실적인 주제는 현시대상황의 반영을 통해 공동체적인 삶의 제시로 작품을 표현하였다. 셋째, 한국무용극 주제의 가장 큰 특징은 천지인(天地人)과 권선징악(勸善懲惡)적 사고관 이었다. 이것은 전통의 계승으로 평가되기도 하지만 한국무용극의 천편일률적인 주제에 대한 문제점으로 지적된다. 우리 무용극은 1960년대 이후 많은 진전을 보이기도 했지만 전통적인 사고관에서 완전히 벗어나 있다고 하기에는 아직 미흡한 것이 현실이다. 보다 발전적인 한국무용극으로 자리매김하기 위해서는 작품내용에 대한 무용가의 예술적 역량과 철학적 안목이 필요할 것이다.
