The mass, a centural act of the Roman Catholic church liturgy, was gradually linked to musical form, and by the 15th century, mass music had a completely independent music form. Before 1250 composers were interested in the proper of the mass. But when the catholic liturgy was almost completed, and new forms of 1iturgy were not added, composers became interested in the ordinary of the mass which is sung all the year round rather than the propers of the mass, each of which is sung usually only once a year. In the 15th century, polyphonic compositions of five parts of the ordinary of the mass -Kyrie. Gloria, Credo. Sanctus and Agnus Dei- was established as a unified work, the parts of which are related to one another. This thesis is a study on early polyphonic mass compositions which explains the theoretical background of the ordinary of the mass and the forms of polyphony until the Messe do Notre Dame, the first setting by one composer. This thesis deals with the content and form of mass music, the basic concepts of polyphony the musical characteristics of polyphony the meaning of the history of polyphony along with an analysis of the score. The trend of the English school, and the achievements of Guillaume Dufuy's mass compositions, are studied. Finally there is a brief survey of the types of mass compositions in the 15th century.;미사란 로마 카톨릭 교회 전례의 가장 중심되는 행위로서 점차 음악적인 의미와 관련되어, 15세기에 이르러서는 완전히 독립된 음악형식으로 정착되었다.
