Abstract
This study was designed to test Ross and Kennedy's hypothesis that use of earlier examples promotes generalizations about problem types, thereby influencing what is learned about the domain. Experiment 1 showed that the first-test cuing led to an advantage on second-test performance for the access of relevant information. The total of 30 University student6 were tested, and thirty subjects studied four probability principles with word problems and then tried to solve two test problems for each principle. For half of the first tests, cues indicated which study problem might be usee. All second tests were uncued. The data of the results were analyzed by t-test on the two conditions that were cued and uncued. Thr results were: The analysis for the performance level was as follows: 1) Although the most important results are second-test performance, first-test performance is examined to ensure that the cues were used and useful. For the correctness scoring, first-test performance was reliably higher in the cued condition, 0.72 to 0.29, for conditions Cued-1 and Uncued-1, t(29)=4.92, u<.001, SEm=.088, with 23 of 30 showing the advantage, p<.001. This advantage was also true for the formula scoring, .86 to .35, 1(29)=5.66,p<.001, SEm=.091, with 19 of 30 subjects, p(.001. Higher performance in the cued condition occurred for three out of four Principles in the correctness scoring and three of four in the formula scoring. Thus, cuing did have a reliable effec on first-1est performance. 2) For the second tests, the correctness scoring did show a reliable .51 advantage for the cued condition,.65 to .14, t(29)=4.67 p<.001, SEm=.109, with 25 of 30 subjects,p<.001, and all four of the principles. Also, for the formula scoring, cuing on the first test led to a stores of .71 and .31 for conditions Cued-2 and Uncued-2, t(29)=4.00, p< .001, SEm=.100;20 of 30 subjects showed the effect, p<.001, and it occrred for all four of the princeples. Experiment 2 showed that the first-test cuing led to an advantage on second-test performance for the use of relevant information. Subjects were 30 University students from the same pool as Experiment 1. The data of the results were analyzed by t-test on the two coditions. The results were: The analysis for the performance level was as follows: 1) For the corrct-ness scoring, the proportions correct were .55 and .28 Cued-1 and Uncued-1, t(29)=3.25, p< .01, SEm=0.082, with 15 of subjects and two principle showing the effect. For formula scoring, condition Cued-1 had performance of .75, compared with .45 for Uncued-1, t(29)=3.53, p<.01, SEm=.085, with 17 of 30 subjects showing the effect, p<.01, and two principles. 2) The results of main interst are proportions of correctly instantiated formulas in Cued-2 and Uncued-2. Cuing on the first test led to a .55 advantage for filling in formulas on the second test, with proportions of .83 and .28 in the Cued-2 and Uncued-2 conditions, t(29)=4.85, p<.001, SEm=.113. This difference in conditions was reliable by a sign test, with 24 of 30 subjects and all four principles showing the effect (P<.001). Experiment. 3 demonstrated that this cuing benefit is due to some generalization induced from using the study problem to solve the first-test problem Subjects were 20 University students from the same pool as Experiment 1 and 2. The data of the results were analyzed by t-test on the conditions. The results were: The analysis for the performance level was as follows. 1)For the correct ness scoring, the proportions correct were .65 and .28 for Cued-1 and Uncued -1, t(19)=4.09, p<.01, SEm=0.092, with 12 of 20 subjects and two principles showing the effect. For formula scoring, condition Cued-1 had performance of .87, compared with .55 for Uncued-1, t(19)=2.76, p<.05, SEm=0, 118, with 13 of 20 subjects shoing the effect, p<.10, and two principles. 2) Cuing on the first test led to a 058 advantage for filling in formulas on the second test proportions of .88 and .30 in the Cued-2 Uncued-2 conditions, t(19)=4.28, p<.001, SEm=.137. This difference in conditions was reliable by a sign test, with 17 of 20 subjects and two principles showing the effect, p<0.1.
