Abstract
셋째, 현대무용 작품 4가지 즉, 마사 그라함(Martha Graham)의 「태초의 신비(Primitive Mysteries)」, 피나 바우쉬(Pina Baush)dml 「봄의 제전(The Rite of Spring)」, 앤 할프린(Ann Halprin)의 「행렬과 변화들(Parades and Changes)」, 메데디스 몽크(Meredith Monk)의 「여자아이의 교육(Education of Girlchild)」등의 작품들 속에서 제의적 요소들의 출현을 알아 보았고, 아울러 생명력있는 현대무용의 새로운 모습을 소개하여 보았다. This thesis analyzes the background and the expression of ritual in the course of the evolution of modern dance until the present. The origin of all art can be found in the ritual ceremony of the primitive society. The primitive man admired the power that overcame his physical restraint and gained it through ritual ceremony. Ritual ceremony of primitive man was dance. Dance enabled him the release of feelings and the rebuilding power. It renews the vigor of his body and spirit by achieving esctacy. To clearly understand the concept of ritual and its involvement in modern dance, part Ⅱ of this thesis describes the meaning of ritual, the relationship of religion and magic to ritual, the relationship between dance and ritual, and the forms of ritual dance and its evolution. 20th century modern dance experienced two world wars, and the constant threat of nuclear catastrophy in the present society, to seek new purpose in the presentation of dance. Part Ⅲ approaches ritual in two seperate avenues, in the works of modern dance, and the background ensuing in the return to its origin. Part Ⅳ investigates the presence of ritual in the works of four choreographers of modern dance, Martha Graham's 'Primitive Mysteries', Pina Bausch's 'The Rite of Spring', Ann Halprin's 'Parades and Changes', and Meredith Monk's 'Education of Girlchild' Modern dance with ritual themes united with other art forms evovlving into total art, involving the audience and performing anywhere. It made dance simpler and enabled ordinary persons to participate. Thus, it had profound effect in the subject and form of modern dance.
