Abstract
In this thesis, the writer has studied the organ works for the period with the work which the writer performed in a graduate recital for master's degree. Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685 - 1750) Canonic Variations on "Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her" represent the culmination of a long, Baroque tradition of canonic writing in composition based upor a cantus firmus, and had submitted when he joined in Mizler Society in 1747. The Canonic Variations, as evidence of Bach's thorough mastery of contrapuntal technique, proved his worthiness for acceptance into the Mizler Society, and adopted cantus firmus for Jesus Christ's Birth as the theme of variations, there on transmitted the message of Incarnation with spiritually raised supreme art form by highly theoretical canon technique. The Great Sonata in C minor composed by Julius Reubke (1834-1858) on works taken from the 94th Psalm, counts among the most important works composed for the organ after J.S. Bach and M. Reger, and must be on everlasting masterpiece of German Romantic period. The forementioned organ sonata is composed of an unique technique unusually in 19 century's works for organ, the third movement of the sonata are based upon a single principal theme the character of which comprises the whole scale from gloomy resignation to defiant resistance. In conclusion, this one composition sufficed to list the name of 24-year-old Julius Reubke among the immortals or organ history. Deuxie`me Symphonic for organ of Marcel Dupre´(1886-1971) is a work continuously maintaining organ symphonic established by Widor. Especially the Deuxie`me Symphonie, studied in this thesis, is his earlier piece which requires a high level of technique. This composition has the abundance by polytonality and frequent variation of the harmony with symphonic writing, and expresses the colorful feeling through quick chord of toccata style, brilliant and skilled technique of staccato execution and intense tone color.
