「Iliad」와 「Odyssey」에 表現된 服飾

Abstract

本 硏究는 古代 그리이스 最古의 文獻인 Homer의 두 篇의 敍事詩 「Iliad」와 「Odyssey」에 나타난 服飾表現을 살펴봄으로서 Homer 時代의 그리이스 服飾과 作品에서의 服飾의 象徵性에 대하여 고찰하였다. 紀元前 1200年에서 紀元前 750年의 Homer時代는 모든 面에서 그리이스的 이라고 하기에 미비한 時期이며, 文學的으로는 武士階級을 예찬하는 英雄詩가 流行한 英雄時代이다. Homer의 두 篇의 敍事詩에 묘사된 服飾은 古代 그리이스 服飾에 대한 最初의 언급으로 그 形態는 以前 그리이스 本土의 미케네 服飾과 전혀 다르며 Homer時代 以後의 알카익 그리이스 服飾과 同一한 服飾이었다. 즉, 單純한 사각형의 織物로 이루어지는 드레퍼리 形式의 服飾이 男女 모두의 undergarment와 outergarment를 이룬다. Homer의 詩에 묘사되어 있는 undergarment로는 chiton, zomapeplon, pharos가 있으며 outergarment로는 chlaina, pharos, kredemnon, kaluptre가 있는데, 여기에 묘사되어 있는 服飾의 形態와 構成은 以後 그리이스 服飾에 그대로 傳承되어 나타난다. 그리고, 作品에서의 象徵性을 살펴보면, 英雄時代라는 社會的 性格이 服飾에 反映되어 貴族社會的 性格을 묘사하는데 있어서 服飾이 黃金과 함께 重要한 象徵的 役割로 나타나 있다. 즉, 形態에 있어서 '긴 길이의', '넓은 폭의'라는 表現을 통하여 神과 英雄들의 崇高함, 高貴함을 나타내고 있으며, 色彩에 있어서는 紫色(purple)과 黃色系列色(gold, saffron, sunlight가 노란색으로 간주됨)이 王權, 尊貴함 그리고 永遠함, 完璧한 아름다움을 象徵하고 있다. 그밖에 검정색(black)은 죽음, 근심, 슬픔을 象徵하고 흰색(white, silvery)은 完璧한 아름다움, 純粹함 그리고 그들 生活의 淸淨함의 美를 나타내고 있으며, 紫色은 王權 外에 悲運을 象徵하고 있다. 素材에 있어서 Homer는 여러가지 修飾句를 통하여 素材의 自然의 美를 表現하고 있는데, 특히 羊毛와 麻織物에 있어서 '은색으로 반짝이는', '하얗게 빛나는', '훌륭하게 직조된' 등의 修飾句를 女神과 王族의 服飾表現에 使用함으로 그들의 高貴함을 더해 주고 있다. 또한 動物 가죽을 素材로는 戰爭의 緊迫感 英雄의 憤怒와 勇猛함을 象徵하였다. 그리고, 그리이스 服飾이 階級差가 없었던 것과 마찬가지로, Homer의 철저한 貴族的 社會觀이 反映된 두 篇의 敍事詩에서도 階級에 따른 服飾의 差異는 찾을 수 없었으며 人物의 性格에 따라서도 服飾의 뚜렷한 差異는 찾을 수가 없었다. 英雄의 人物에 중점을 두고 神과의 相互關係를 엮어 나간 Homer의 作品에서의 服飾은 神과 英雄들의 優越性, 尊貴함, 完璧한 아름다움을 나타내기 위한 象徵的 媒介로 表現되고 있다.;This thesis is a study on the constmes and their symbols in Homer's 「Iliad」 and 「Odyssey」, the oldest literatures of the Ancient Greece. Homeric Age from B. C 1200 to B. C 750 was not representative of the typical Greek Period in all its aspects, and it was the heroic period when the heroic poetries were prevailing in literature. The costumes mentioned about in two epics were the first written descrption of the Ancient Greek Costumes, and they differed greatly from those of Myceneans, yet similar to the Archaic Greek Costumes as we know. The undergarments and the outergarments consisting of drapery styles of costumes composed of simple oblong fabric were worn by both man and woman. Articles of the undergarments were chiton, zoma, peplon and pharos and the outergarments, chlaina, pharos, kredemnon and kaluptre. The styles of costumes and their composition as expressed in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey were transmitted to Greek Costumes after Homeric Age. In the costumes in the Homer's works were reflected the social characteristics of the heroic period, and they played a symbolic role as an example that gold describes the high quality a noble society. Also, in the expressions of forms such as 'long', 'large', 'rich' and 'great' were symbolized the sublimity and nobleness of God and heroes. Concerning colors, purple and yellow(as with the yellowish colors such as gold, saffron and sunlight) symbolized royalty, sublimity, eternity and perfect beauty; black symbolized death, grief and anxiety while white symbolized complete beauty, pureness and the beauty of clarity in living; purple symbolized royal power, loftness and misfortune as well. And for the material, animal leather symbolized the tension of war, the anger and the courageousness of hero. As the general, Greek Costumes showed no differences among social classes, costumes in the two epics by Homer who maintained sound aristocratic social view revealed no status differences, either. Neither the distinct differences in the costumes according to the characteristics of personages could be found as well. The costumes in Homer's works which, focusing on heroes, triad to find out the weave of relationship between God and Human were utilized as a proper symbolic medium which revealed the superiority, the nobleness and the perfect beauty of God and heroes.
