Acquiring linguistic skill of a language does not mean mastering it. This is because a language is a product of its socio-cultural environment. Only when one can use a language in a certain situation in a way which native speakers would do in that situation, we can say that he/she has mastered it. Therefore, teaching a foreign language should be accompanied by teaching the culture of the country where that language is used, that is, the target culture. From the mid-60s, it has been recognised that a language should be learned as a social phenomenon. Since thou, the focus of foreign language teaching has changed from such linguistic skills as grammar, listening, speaking and writing to communicative competence, which means the ability to use a language in a 'culturally suitable' way. Developing communicative competence of a certain language requires getting used to the target culture. in this context, it is now argued that teaching foreign languages in secondary schools should be accompanied by teaching the target cultures. For a foreign language teacher to teach a target culture, he/she needs to be familiar with various elements of the culture, ranging from such observable ones as language, custom, cooking and art to such unobservalble ones as beliefs, values and institutions. In order to help students to understand a target culture, we can use such methods as using questionnaires concerning individual and institutional aspects of the culture, classifying various elements of the culture into several facets, mapping a culture into different categories according to primary message systems. The importance of cultural teaching in foreign language classrooms makes it necessary for foreign language teachers to acquire skills in teaching culture. In addition, it is necessary for texts to include cultural components in a systematic way, One important thing here is that teachers and texts should not be biased in dealing with the native and at the same time the target culture. Moreover, the teachers should be trained to acquire such professional skills for cultural teaching as comparison method, culture assimilators, culture capsules, drama/role-play, newspapers, projected media, culture island and value hierarchies. In Korea, the importance of cultural teaching in foreign language class-rooms is widely recognised. However, foreign language teachers' training and retraining programs do not offer many skills for cultural teaching. And the foreign language tests are inappropriate for the students to learn the target culture. Weedless to say, workable methods and tests for cultural teaching are rearely practised in foreign language classrooms. In the above, we have argued for the importance of introducing cultural teachings into foreign language education. For this introduction to be successful, we need institutional support from the government and educational institutions, and at the same time individual efforts by foreign language teachers themselves to develop appropriate methods and tests for cultural teaching.-
