J. Massenet의 opera 「Werther(1892)」에 관한 고찰

Abstract

Jules Massenet (1842-1912) was a French opera composer active in the second half of the 19th century. Although in fact we are not well acquainted with his works except for the work 'Manon(1884)', In fact he was a prolific composer who produced more than 30 operatic works. The work of 'Werther(1892)' that will be surveyed here, is regarded as his representative work, in common with 'Manon' and 'Thai¨s (1894)'. 'Werther' is based on the novel by Goethe (1749-1832) 'The grief of young Werther' as an opera, and it is said that he was greatly impressed by Goethe's sentimentalism as depicted in this novel, at a time that emphasized irrationality and the predominance of sentiment against enlightening rationalism. The purposes of this study are to understand the work and to re-illuminate its worth through studying this work 'Werther'. The content of each chapter of this study is as follows. Chapter one is the introduction, chapter two is an analysis of the opera, in view of the French art from the middle of the 19th century, and in connection with the life of Massenet and the characteristics of his other works. Chapter three is an analysis of 'Werther'. Here the motif and the content of this work are studied and the work is analyzed, focusing on the musical motifs. Chapter four is the conclusion and the contents of it are as follows. Massenet was the most loved opera composer of his time. Yet, he was criticized by the critics because his works are so popular that these are no more than the work of hedonism. Of course he had not only the important music style but musical depth. But his musical and theoretical viewpoints are worthy of being appraised highly in the light of the characteristics of the performing arts (opera) and the historical background of the arts in the 19th century. 'Werther' is a splendid work, that contributes to a reappraisal of him. Each act is filled with the motifs representing the more direct style of Wagner than any of his other works. The progress of the formation and the harmony present romantic aspects, and the entire organization is very traditional. Consequently, we don't have to entirely depend upon the critics' words that his music is so popular. Also, we must consider that he exploited an original style of his own, using every musical facet and that Massenet had a great effect upon his contemporary composers.;Jules Massenet (1842∼1912)는 19세기말의 French opera 작곡가이다. Massenet는 30여편 이상의 오페라를 발표한 다작가였음에도 불구하고 우리에게 알려진 것은 「Manon (1884) 」정도로 생소하다. 본 논문에서 고찰하고자 하는 「Werther(1892) 」는 「 Manon 」과 「 That's (1894) 」와 더불어 그의 대표작으로 꼽히는 주요 작품이다. 「Werther」는 Wolfgang Goethe (1749∼1832)의 소설 「 젊은 베르테르의 슬픔 」을 opera화 한 것으로, 계몽주의적 합리주의에 대한 비합리주의와 감정의 우위를 특색으로 하는 시대의 Goethe의 이 작품에 나타난 감상성이 작곡가를 크게 감동시켰다고 한다. 이러한 「 Wether 」를 연구함으로써 작품을 널리 이해하고 그 가치를 재조명하려는데에 본 논문의 목적이 있다. Ⅰ장의 서론에 이어서 Ⅱ장에서는 19세기 중엽부터의 French 예술의 시대상에 opera를 비추어보고, Massent의 생애와 작품의 특징들에 대해서 살펴본다. Ⅲ장에서는 「 Werther 」의 연구로, 작품을 쓰게 된 유래와 내용에 대해서 살피고, 동기(motif)를 중심으로 작품을 분석하였다. Ⅳ장의 결론은 다음과 같다. Massnet는 그의 당대에 가장 사랑받던 opera 작곡가였는데, 지금에 와서 그의 작품이 비평가들의 비판의 대상이 되는 이유는 너무 대중적인 작품들이라는 점에서이다. 물론 Massnet는 음악계에서 높이 평가할만한 중요한 음악양식이나 깊이를 가지지는 못하였다. 그러나 19세기 예술의 시대적 배경이나 opera 라는 공연예술의 특성에서 보면, 그의 음악적, 사상적 견해는 높이 평가받을만하다. 「Wether」는 이러한 그의 재 평가에 도움을 주는 좋은 예이다. 각 막마다 남치는 5개 이상의 동기를 음악의 구성을 이끌어 가는것이 그의 다른 작품들보다 가장 Wagner (1813∼1883)적인 면을 보여주고 있다. 또한 조성이나 화성의 진행등에서는 낭만적인 면을, 그리고 전체적인 구조는 아주 전통적인 점을 찾아 볼 수 있다. 이러한 모든 점을 살펴 보았을 때 그는 자기나름의 양식을 잘 살려 나갔다고 해야 할 것이다. 실제로 이러한 점은 그의 동시대 작곡가들에게 지대한 영향을 주었다.
