Abstract

Healey Willan (1880-1968) is the most prominent Canadian composer and organist in the early-twentieth century. He wrote in many idioms, but his most significant contribution was in the field of organ and sacred choral music. This thesis was described Willan's life, period list of organ Among his organ works, the works and history of passacaglia form. Among his organ works, the musical characteristics of "Introduction, passacaglia and Fugue" was analyzed. This work is considered to be one of the greatest works by the style of the passacaglia since Bach. On the basis of these analysis, the following results have been drawn : 1. "Introduction, passacaglia and Fugue" is developed with thematic relerance. Especially in the passacaglia's nineteenth variation presents the singular example of the coda which usually follows the Fugue. 2. The remarkable characteristic of this work lies in the applications of the chromatic scale melodies and chord progress which are the characteristics of post - Romantic music. 3. Willan made use of a variety of Barogue style : application of passacaglia form, contrapuntal techniques- that is cannon, imitation, sequence, repetition, inversion, pedal point and stretto. 4. By applying chorale to one of the passacaglia variations, Willan expressed his religious belief. He also wrote a number of organ works using the Hymn-Tune. 5. The singular points in the Registration are the applications of the harp at the part of Arpeggio chord and of the Tuba at works using the Climax. Finally willan's "Introduction Passacaglia and Fugue was written in the 20th century without being imbued by the new mode of the 20th century. And as the title of this work suggests, it was composed by fixing the characteristics of post-Romentic music into the traditional style of Baroque.;윌란(Healey Willan, 1880~1968)은 20세기초 카나다의 대표적인 작곡가이며 오르가니스트였다. 그는 여러 분야의 작품을 남겼는데 특히 오르간곡과 교회 합창곡을 많이 작곡했다. 본 논문은 서론에서 윌란의 생애를 간단히 살펴보고 다음으로 그의 오르간작품의 시기별 목록과 Passacaglia형식의 발달사를 고찰했다. 마지막으로 그의 오르간 작품중 Bach이후 Passacag1ia형식으로 작곡된 곡중 가장 위대하다고 일컬어지는 Introduction, Passacagila and Fugue를 분석함으로써 구체적으로 이 곡의 특징을 살펴보았다. 분석의 결과 다음과 같은 특징을 알 수 있었다. 첫째, 이 곡의 구조는 Introduction, Passacaglia, Fugue가 서로 주제적인 연관을 가지고 발전되었으며 특히 Passacaglia의 19번째 Variation이 Fugue 다음에 Coda처럼 사용된 특이한 예를 보여준다. 둘째, 이 곡 전체에 후기 낭만음악의 특징인 반음계적 선율과 반음계적 화음진행을 두드러지게 많이 사용했다. 셋째, Passacglia 형식의 사용, 대위법적 기법의 Canon, 모방, 동형 진행, 반복, 전위, 보속음, 근접모방 등 바로크의 형식을 사용하고 있다. 넷째, Passacaglia Variation 하나에 Chorale을 사용함으로 자신의 신앙심을 표현했는데 윌란은 Hymn-Tune을 사용하는 많은 오르간 작품을 남기고 있다. 다섯째, Registration에서 특이한 점은 Arpeggio Chord에 Harp를 사용한 것과 Climax에서 Tuba를 사용한 점이다. 결론적으로 윌란의 Introduction, Passacaglia and Fugue는 20세기에 작곡되었으나 20세기의 새로운 양식에 물들지 않고 그 제목이 암시하듯이 바로크의 전통적 음악양식에다 후기 낭만음악의 특성을 잘 가미하여 작곡되었음을 알 수 있었다.
