Abstract
Oratorio 「The Dream of Gerontius」Op. Edward Elgar (1857~1934) was England's first truly professional composer. His abundant invention, largeness of vision, and strength and singularity of musical character place him high among European Romantic artists and at the peak of British music of his time. His Enigma Variations and The Dream of Gerontius might be said to have inaugurated a renaissance in English music. He produced various forms of music. Among these, his major works were in the field of choral music. This study has been undertaken to outline his life and music, and especially, to find the characteristics of his choral music. For this study, various literary works and music scores were referred to. The major findings may be summarized as follows ; 1. In his choral music, the key, the time-signature, the tempo, and the marks of exprssion vary frequently. For example, in The Challenge of Thor which consist of only 137 measures, the key changes seven times. In the cantata Caractacus, the time-signature changes 52 times. And in The Dream of Gerontius, tempo indications change 290 times. Elgar was expecially fond of using 'largamente' and 'allargando' to enhance the meaning of the text. 2. On the whole, the melody of his choral music is unrestricted. Also, the melodic phrases frequently begin with an upward leap of a 4th,5th, 6th or octave. 3. Like his older contemporaries, Wagner and Puccini, Elgar uses many words to express the way the text should be sung(e.g. 'piangendo', 'risoluto' 'con molto esaltazione', 'disperato', 'parlando', 'solenne', 'grandiose', etc.) 4. The key signature does not necessarily indicate a key, and normal harmonic analysis of his major works is almost impossible. 5. Frequently, the downbeats of the rhythm synchronize with the accents of the words of the text, and the melody harmonizes with the intonation of the text. 6. In the accompaniment, the pedal point and basso ostinato forms are used frequently. 7. The basic simplicity of the melody is relieved by various rhythmic devices, such as syncopation and triplets. The Dream of Gerontius is a noble composition, the music of which inspires the listener. As a representative choral work it helps greatly in understanding Elgar as a composer.
