대화함축과 관련성 이론에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문의 목적은 Grice가 명명한 대화적 함축 의미 (Conversational implicature)에 관하여 살펴 보고, 실제로는 대화적 함축 의미를 추론 하는데 관련성 (relevance) 이 가장 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 보이려는 데 있다. Grice는 모든 담화를 지배하는 대화 협력 원칙 및 그에 따르는 대화 격률들을 제시하였다. 그리고 대화 가담자들이 서로 협력한다는 전제하에 화자가 대화 격률을 준수 또는 위배하였을 때 청자가 환자의 의도를 추론하는 것을 대화적 함축 의미라 설명하였다. 그러나, 대화적 함축 의미에 대한 Grice의 설명은 좀 문제가 있다. 실제로 대화적 함축 의미를 발생시키는 데에는 Grice가 설정한 여러 대화 격률 중의 하나인 관련성의 범주(the category of Relation)가 가장 중요한 역할을 한다. 이에 대하여 Sperber와 Wilson이 관련성의 원칙(principle of relevance)을 제시하게 된다. 즉, 모든 발화는 그 발화가 행해지는 맥락에 관련성을 가질 때만 그 발화의 대화적 함축의미가 추론된다는 것이다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 Grice는 관계 격률을 간단하게 다루고 있으나, 사실은 대화적 함축 의미의 발생에 있어서 가장 중요한 요소라 하겠으며, 오히려 전반적인 대화 협력 원칙을 지배하는 가장 중요한 원칙이 될 수 있다고 보는 것이다. 그리고 Sperber와 Wilson의 '관련성의 이론'의 타당성을 몇몇 다른 예에도 적용함으로써 관련성 이론의 타당한 설명력을 결론으로서 제시하였다.;The present thesis critically reviews Grice's approach to the conversational implicature. Then an attempt is made to show that the relevance theory is the most important one in providing an adequate account of the conversational implicature. Grice's suggestion is that there is a set of assumptions guiding the conduct of conversation. He identifies, as guidelines of conversation, maxims of conversation which jointly express a general co-operative principle. On the basis of this principle various kinds of inferences may arise, and these inferences are referred to as conversational implicatures. They are of two distinct types : the first type, i.e., standard implicature, arises when the speaker is observing the maxims and the second type is obtained when the speaker is floutings or exploiting the maxims. Grice's general approach, however, has several problems. In fact, 'the maxim of relation' is shown to be most important in accounting for implicature. On the basis of the maxim, Sperber and Wilson suggest the principle of relevance. That is, the conversational implicature of all utterances depends on their relevance to the combination of the context and content. So they claim that 'relevance' is a crucial factor for the theory of the conversational implicature of an utterance. The present thesis further elaborates Sporter and Wilson's theory of 'relevance' and shows its adequacy by examing various kinds of examples. It is concluded that their 'relevance theory' is explanatorily adequate.
