Abstract
Robert Alexander Schumann(1810-1856), contributed to Romantic chamber mucic with Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Brahms. This thesis is an analytical study on the Piano Quintet Op. 44, one of Schumann's representative chamber music compositions. The procedure of study is to describe Characteristics of Schumann's chamber music works first, and then to analysis Op. 44 in defail, and to compare it with general characteristics of his chamber music works. Although the number of his chamber music works is not many, they show his romantic characteristics sufficiently. The Piano Quintet Op. 44 is the only Schumann's Piano Quintet and shows his classic-romantic features. It is in four movements. the first is in sonata form, the second is in rondo-sonata form, the third is in scherzo form, and the fourth is in sonata form. Special features in regard to forms are as follows. First, Sonata form instead of song form is used in the slow movement, and sonata form of the fourth movement has two sets of exposition-development-recapturation. Second, the idea of cyclic form, characteristic of romantic period is utilized in this work, and the final movement starts with a minor key, finishes with a major key. Third, through out the whole Piece chromatic harmony, frequent modulations, uncertain keys, nonharmonic tones are used freely, on the other hand contrapuntal techniques which seem to be influenced by Beethoven and Bach appear in this oomposition. Fourth, on the whole, dominant 7th, diminished 7th, 9th, altered chords are often used, and in the development of the first movement modulation to dominant key appears many times. Fifth, in the organization of five instruments the Piano part seems to be worked out in full detail than are the string parts, but the combination between the piano part and each string part shows chamber music form.
