영감의 근원으로서의 장소

Abstract

한남, 아현, 동작, 면목 등 서울의 특정 지역 이름으로 시작하는 본인의 장소 연작들은 오래전부터 지속해온 기이한 취미(또는 습관이라 부를 수도 있는)에서 연유한다. 사춘기 시절부터 어떤 특별한 감정을 환기시키는 장소를 찾아다니며 단순히 그 우울한 분위기에 젖어있다 오곤 했는데 보통 버스나 지하철을 무작위로 타고 가다가 마음에 드는 곳에 내려 그곳을 배회하는 식이었다. 주로 재개발을 앞둔 낙후된 지역-개포동 구룡 마을, 현재 공원 조성 이전의 동숭동 낙산 시립아파트 등이 그것들이다. 그러나 감상적인 장소애(場所愛)에만 그쳤던 두서없는 행보들이 작업의 본격적인 모티브로 나타나고 그것이 장소에 대한 본인의 일관된 태도에 의해 이루어졌다는 점을 의식하게 된 것은 보다 최근의 일이다. 본 논문은 장소에 관계된 본인의 작업들을 설명하며 그러한 작업에서 공통적으로 찾을 수 있는 의식의 배후를 탐구하는데서 출발한다. 장소는 인간적 가치가 부여된 공간을 의미한다. 따라서 본인의 작업은 아직 의미화 되지 않은 공간 속에서 실존적으로 한 개인과 관계 맺는 곳으로서의 장소 만들기이다. 그리고 장소감(a sense of place)은 특정한 장소에 대한 사람들의 개인적인 애착과 자기 동일화를 의미한다. 장소감은 장소 본연의 정체성과 함께 장소의 총체적 특질을 가리키는 장소성(placeness)을 만들어낸다. 본인의 작업들은 이러한 장소화의 과정 중 특히 개인적 의미부여의 성격이 강한 장소감에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 작업 내에서 그러한 장소감이 어떤 식으로 획득되어졌으며 특징은 무엇인가, 그것이 어떤 방법으로 관객에게 보여지는가가 본 논문이 밝힐 주된 내용이 될 것이다. 장소를 다루는데 있어서 본인의 작품에 나타나는 장소성의 의미는 크게 두 가지 상반된 면으로 나타난다. 첫째, 실상 본인의 작품에서 장소는 그것이 위치한 장소의 객관적 배경에서 분리되어 주관적으로 덧씌운 상상에 의해 구성된다는 점이다. 실증적이거나 사회적인 관점이 아닌, 개인의 상상적 시각의 부각에 초점을 맞춘다. 상식적인 관점에서 비껴서는 특수한 시선, 그것은 시선의 전환에 대한 문제이기도 하다. 둘째, 그러나 순전히 개인적인 취향과 우연에 의해 선택된 듯 보이는 장소들에게도 공통점이 있으며 그것은 바로 근원적인 귀소 본능과 관련되어있다는 것이다. 이것은 특히 서울에서 자라며 자연스럽게 형성된 본인의 유, 소년기의 자아정체성과 80년대라는 시대정체성과 깊은 관련이 있다. 본문에서는 개인과 집단의 정체성 등이 유기적으로 얽혀 형성된 서울의 장소정체성을 살펴볼 것이다. 즉 이것은 정체성의 문제와도 관련이 있는 것이다. 시선의 주체는 상상적인 의미를 부여하여 장소를 재구성한다. 그러나 장소는 대상이기 이전에 이미 시각주체의 정서를 형성시킨 근원으로 작용한다. 여기서 장소는 인간의 의식을 구성하는 요소로서 자리한다. 즉 그것에 거주하거나 관련을 맺는 인간이 누구인지를 가장 잘 알려주는 지표가 될 수 있으며 본인의 경우에는 개인적 의미가 분출되고 집중되는 발원지이기도 하다. 장소는 그것이 실질적으로 의미하는 것 이상이 될 수 있다.;It is based on my old habit that my series of works on "place" which were named after the several real places in Seoul like Hannam, Ahyun, Dongjack and Myunmock. Since I was a teenager, I have searched for some places that have special mood and I used to be there just for feeling melancholy. In order to this, I took a bus or subway at random and got off some spot which I am attracted to. However, it is not until nowadays that I could realize those incoherent walks just looked like sentimental topophilia are the results of my consistent attitudes on place. And these unordinary walks have become my last works' serious motives. This essay will explain my works related to places and search the common basis of conscious from those works. Place means the space filled with human values. Therefore my works are the process of changing space into place as connecting relationship with man. And 'a sense of place' is a private attachment and the identification between man and place. It also makes 'placeness' which is the whole character of place with the identity of place itself. My works are especially focused on the 'sense of place' which is known as more private through that process of making place. In this essay, there are several main questions that how the sense of place could be got by, what the features are and how the features could be seen by the spectators through my works of art. 'placeness' in my works could appear as two different sides. Firstly, the place in my works are separated from the objective location and reconstructed by my subjective imagination. In other words, my works are about seeing places with my own view. Secondly, the places looks like selection of random taste though, there is the main common feature. That is the connecting with the homing instinct. Especially it is related to my specific identity which was made in 1980s' Seoul. Accordingly my works are also a question of identity. The subject of view reconstruct the place with his or her own imagination. However the place is not only the objective as an inspiration, but also the source which made the atmosphere of subjective's view. Place could be the post that can say who you are. It can be the great source of man's private meanings. Place is beyond the place.
