자연을 통한 시간성의 표현

Abstract

현대사회는 변화 속도가 가속화되고, 단일한 시·공간성이 해체됨에 따라 복수적 속성의 여러 시간 구조가 작용하고 있다. 한쪽에서는 시·공간을 절대적인 것으로 상정해놓은 근대적 시간 개념이 실생활을 지배하는 반면, 다른 한쪽에서는 또 다른 시간개념이 존재한다. 이제 과거처럼 많은 사람이 시간을 공유한다는 생각에 변화가 생기면서 시간은 그 어느 시기보다 중요한 변수이자 관심의 대상이 되고 있다. 시간이 복잡한 수수께끼만큼 시간에 관한 많은 사유는 끊임없이 논의되어 왔다. 그것은 시간이 각 개인의 심리적 측면에도 깊이 관여하며 의미를 지니므로 시간을 탐구하는 것 자체가 우리 자신과의 만남을 위한 길이기 때문이다. 본인은 다양한 시간의식 가운데 체험을 통한 주관적 시간의식이 어떻게 형성되었는지 살피고자 한다. 이는 시간의 본질을 밝히려고 하거나 시간의식의 중요성을 말하려는 것이 아니다. 개인에 따라 같은 일을 놓고도 서로 다르게 인식하므로 경험에 의해 여러 층위의 시간구조가 존재한다는 사실과 그러한 다른 시간을 경험하는 것이 지닌 의미를 작품을 통해 이야기하기 위해서이다. 시간을 시각화하는 것은 곧 공간에서의 경험으로 표현되기 마련이다. 본인의 주관적 시간의식은 작품에서 자연이라는 공간으로 환원되어 나타난다. 결국 추상적 시간은 구체적 사물의 변화로서 형상화되는데, 본인의 경우 시간은 자연에서 벌어지는 변화를 매개로 표현된다. 그 이유는 자연이 제공하는 시간적 상상력에 있다. 균일한 시계의 시간은 자연적 시간을 기술적으로 단순화시킨 것이기에 단순화되기 이전의 시간, 즉 자연이 보여주는 과정은 다양하게 해석될 여지가 있다. 자연 속에서 느끼는 시간은 살아있는 생명체의 시간으로서 우리의 상상력을 구체적으로 자극한다. 자연에서 보고, 듣고, 만지는, 구체적 지각경험을 통해 우리가 주관적으로 시간을 재구성할 때 그것은 어떤 의미가 있을까? 자연을 통한 시간경험은 일상을 지배하는 세속적 시간이 아닌 다른 층위의 시간과 만나게 해준다는데 의미가 있다. 자연의 미세한 변화를 목격하는 짧은 순간은 건조한 일상을 다르게 만드는 탈일상의 순간이다. 일상의 동일성에 파묻혀 있던 숨겨진 것이 갑작스럽게 드러나면서 이 사소한 사건은 지루하고 반복적인 일상을 환기시킨다. 짧은 찰나적 순간을 경험하는 것과 달리 자연에서 변치 않는 초월적 힘을 느끼는 경우, 우리는 영원성을 띤 시간과 만나게 된다. 이 근원적 시간에 대한 경험은 파편화된 삶을 살아가는 현대인에게 잃어버린 시간과 통일성에 대한 욕구를 채워주며 벅찬 변화와 소멸을 감싸 안을 수 있는 여유를 만들어 준다. 다양한 차원의 시간을 경험하는 것은 우리의 삶을 풍부하게 해주고 삶의 지평을 확장시킨다. 그런데, 이 시계적 시간을 벗어나는 순간은 자연이 내뿜는 기호에 민감할수록 더 쉽게 만날 수 있는 것이다. 본인의 작품은 규정될 수 없는 비물질적 자연의 요소들이 지각을 통해 체험되는 순간을 시각화함과 동시에 시각적인 것 너머의 것을 느끼게 하는데 목적이 있다. 무한 공간의 하늘과 해와 달, 나무, 바람소리 등이 본인의 눈과 귀와 손끝을 통해 어떻게 흘러 들어와 작품으로 흘러나가는지에 대한 과정을 고찰하기 위해 본인은 각각의 지각이 갖고 있는 특성을 작업과 관련하여 설명하였다. 시각만이 제공하는 무한성에 대한 표상과 그에 비해 대상을 재현하는 기능은 취약하지만 역동적인 현실성을 갖는 청각적 특징은 사진이나 비디오매체를 통해 표현된다. 한편 만지는 행위에 포함된 일종의 유입적 성격에 주목하여 본인은 주관적으로 경험한 시간을 매체가 아닌 손의 촉각을 직접 이용해 표현하였다. 본인이 주관적으로 체험한 시간을 형상화하는 과정에서 자연이란 대상을 빌어오는 필연적 이유가 있다. 그것은 자연자체가 가지는 힘으로 인해 자연에서 경험한 작은 떨림은 다른 무엇보다 삶 안에서 크게 울릴 수 있다고 믿기 때문이다. ; In modernized society, rapid changes and collapse of monotonous time/space perception give rise to several time structures with multiple attributes. While modernized perception of time dominates daily routines of ordinary people, on the other, the classical theory of time/space system, which emphasizes the absoluteness of time and space, is still active. In addition, thirst for virtual reality along with technological development has made the discussions on virtual time system flourish recently. Therefore, the past thought that many people share time has been granted a room for change owing to those phenomena stated above. Consequently, time became the most significant variable, and draws attention of every eye in corners of the society. Time, as a mysterious being, has given rise to ceaseless speculation over itself, and resulted in incessant debates from the perspective of arts, and philosophy. Furthermore, a pursuit for a truth of time also has psychological significance, for it ultimately is believed to lead us a quest for ourselves. Our perception of time is closely related to the change in surroundings around ourselves. This paper will be discussing a formation of subjective perception of time via experiences in changes of society. However, neither intrinsic value of time nor the significance of it is major concern, but a emphasis on the existence of numerous time system depending on individual circumstances (experiences) is one with importance. Visualization of time represents an experience in spatial reality. My subjective perception of time in reality visualizes time on space as a nature in my works. Being abstractive, time can eventually be represented by an object with definite figure, however, for me, the change in nature used to be a vehicle which brings perception of time into tangible being, for the human beings are still lured into the Mighty Nature who possesses all the mysteries including time itself that human intelligence can never reach. Unlike the genuine natural time system, the technically simplified time system that is represented by needles in watch leaves enough room for a various interpretation of the original system, because it stimulates our imagination as it can easily be experienced and felt by living creatures in the process of change in nature. Moreover, we are very familiar with the natural time with natural rhythm as its axis, which is distinctive from astronomical time. Simply perceiving cosmological meaning of time through the nature can be meaningful to modern people who is forced to rapidly digest the gap between numerous and reckless changes. If we subjectively reorganize time along with the experience through eyes years, and senses, where would that lead us? The contact with time through all the natural beings around us such as sky, oceans, and trees leads us to reach out to the different layer of time system away from the dominance of secular time perception. Observing minute natural change, we are on the verge of deviating from the monotonous routines. At this turnover, trifling matter suddenly evokes hidden meanings of humdrum daily lives and rejuvenates tedious repeating routines. These little happenings soak into our daily lives again and gradually make changes. Sometimes, feeling everlasting authority of nature beyond human intelligence, we can communicate with eternity. Relationship with the essentiality of time satisfies people whose lives are fragmentated by filling up their long for lost moments and serenity, which help people calm on changes and vanishings of their surroundings. Meeting nature and experiencing of various dimensions of time nourish our lives and expand the horizon of lives. The more sensitive to the appetite of the nature, the more easily can it be achieved. My works visualize the instance that immaterial, and indescribable being is perceived via senses, and simultaneously provide people with inspirations of those things beyond visualization. Sun, moon, trees, sound of wind, and the other things residing in infinite time and space pass through all of my body, and flow out of my fingertips. To illustrate the process, this paper provides the interpretation of my works along with clarification of the characteristics of each sense. I cannot help making use of nature as a metaphor of my subjective perception of time, for, in my heart, there is a belief that minute resonance from the experience in nature can be more magnificent than anything else in life by its own might. My work has been led by this firm belief, thus, herewith, may it also resonate within hearts of those who share inspirations of my work, and after all, be a resolute conviction to my own heart, works, career, and life.
