- Abstract
; One s perception or character is basically determined by the society s trend of thought where one comes from. It is also through disposition that one s concept, emotion, and imagination is projected into the artwork. Disposition is the main character of one s art. It is natural for the society s originality and speciality to be revealed within one s art work, and I insist it should be that way. Therefore, as a Korean growing up my whole life only in Korea, I believe and desperately hope there is the natural resonance of the Korean culture in my work.
Eastern painting is naturally formed based on the eastern philosophy emphasizing spirituality and mentality distinguished to the western art. It focuses on the process of drawing the content and state of mind rather than the form itself, which I have tried to achieve through the abstract and succinct lines of the object rather than realistic depiction. The process of importing emotion, and drawing it with condensed simple lines is the expression of the potential sa-eui character.
By Arnheim, an artist s expression and state of mind should be in the relationship of different form but same nature . It is emphasizing that although the form of the state of mind and the visual language is different it should be based on the coherent unity of the artist s life and the art work. If someone would always follow the trend of western art and makes one s art based on the collected materials like that, one will not maintain the true unity. The value of the human and the value of the beauty will not be coherent. Therefore, an artist who can be spoke upon the different form but same nature formula will be the true master of one s own art work.
An artist is always aware of one s own surroundings, and one will discover details which many overlook. Artists from east and west have projected their emotions into the daily life objects. However, the differences between the western art based on the scientific reasoning and the eastern art based on the concept of including the human as a part of nature, has naturally developed the different trend of still life in each era.
Through the research of western still life and the Korean painting of ki-myung-jul-ji , I have discovered the Korean roots in my own paintings. In order to articulate the roots and influence of the eastern art concept sa-eui , I have concentrated on the relationship of ki-un (energy), and hyung-sa (form).
In terms of the painting method, I have expressed the lines based on the inlaid technique and handled the background associating the sa-eui still life in order to avoid the lightness coming from the simple form.
