작품에 있어서의 가변성에 관한 연구 : 가변적 작품의 체험을 통한 다양한 의미화 과정

Abstract

본 연구는 부드러운 재료인 지퍼를 이용하여 제작한 본인의 작품연구로서 가변적인 형태를 통해 상대적인 공간형성을 가능하도록 하였다. 지퍼라는 일상의 사물로 이루어진 작품은 예술작품을 일상의 공간으로 가져왔지만 지퍼는 예술작품이 되면서 실제 일상생활에서의 실용적 기능을 통한 의미를 상실하고, 다시금 예술작품으로 거듭나게 된다. 예술작품 속에서 새로운 의미를 부여받은 지퍼는 은유적이고 초월적인 가능성을 가진다. 이제 지퍼는 본연의 기능인 일상 사물을 감싸고 열어주는 기능이 아닌 예술작품으로서 존재하며, 가변적 공간의 형성을 가능하게 해준다. 또한 지퍼들을 이어 붙여 형성된 면은 휘거나 접혀지면서 우연적이고 변화되는 형태를 만들어 내고, 그럼으로써 관객으로 하여금 작품을 다양하게 체험하도록 유도한다. 지퍼라는 일상적 사물이 만들어낸 작품을 관객으로 하여금 현상학적 관점에서의 몸을 중심으로 한 체험을 통해 수없이 많은 의미를 갖게 하는 것이다. 다시 말해, 관객은 지퍼에 달려있는 손잡이를 이용해 지퍼를 열고 닫고, 또한 형태를 변화시키면서 각자의 무한한 상상력을 발휘해 작품에 의미를 부여하게 된다. 실존은 공간이다 라고 하이데거가 언급했듯이 인간의 삶 자체는 공간이라는 가장 기본적인 범주를 떠나서는 결코 존립할 수 없으며, 예술작품 역시 실제 공간을 경험하는 현실 속에 존재한다. 따라서 관람객과 공간 그리고 대상물인 예술작품은 서로가 서로에게 의미를 부여해 주며 서로의 존재의 이유가 되어주는 관계 속에서 존재하게 된다. 관객이 체험하는, 예술 작품이 놓여있는 이 공간은 공통적으로 주어져있으면서도 각 개인이 받아들이는 방법에 따라 너무나도 상대적으로 지각되고 판단되는 것이다. 다시 말해 우리는 시간의 흐름 안에서 그 절대적인 공간에 개인의 성질을 첨가하여 상대적인 공간을 만들어내고 있다고도 할 수 있을 것이다. 작품에 사용된 지퍼는 재료적 측면에서 볼 때, 부드러운 재료로 분류될 수 있으므로 부드러운 재료를 이용한 예술 작품인 Soft Sculpture에 대한 연구 역시 병행되었다. 현대미술에서 최근 30년 간 나타난 여러 경향들, 새로운 개념의 등장 및 그에 알맞은 다양한 재료사용과 더불어 확장된 미술 표현 영역에서, Soft Sculpture는 수많은 작가들의 여러 다른 의도와 concept을 표현해 왔다. 본 연구는 부드러운 재료의 사용을 통해 일정한 공간 속에서의 상대적 변화가능성을 도모하고 관객이 현상학적 체험을 통해, 작품을 유연하게 받아들이도록 하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 기본도구는 이론적 배경과 작품표현 및 작품분석이다. 이론적 배경에서는 공간에 대한 개념이 어떻게 확장되어 왔는지 알아보고, 현상학적 방법에서 예술작품에의 접근을 시도하여 예술작품과 공간, 그리고 관객이 어떻게 관계 지워지는지 살펴보았으며, 색에 대한 현상학적 이해 역시 연구해보았다. 또한 Soft Sculpture의 개념과 전개과정을 고찰하고 여러 다양한 조각의 경향들에서 부드러운 재료들이 어떻게 사용되어왔는지를 다루었는데, 구체적인 작가와 그들의 작품들을 통해 제작의도에 따라 어떠한 작품이 만들어지는지를 분석해 보았다. 표현 내용은 지퍼의 특성을 이용한 가변적인 작품의 체험과 색에 대한 현상학적 체험에 대해 알아보았으며 또한 작품이 변화되며 만들어내는 가변적 공간에 대해 살펴보았다. 표현 방법에서는 표현내용을 시각화하기 위한 형태적, 방법적 장치들을 살펴보았다. 그리고, 작품 분석에서는 표현된 7점의 작품을 대상으로 이론적 배경과 표현 내용 및 표현 방법에 근거하여 분석하였다. 본 연구는 부드러운 재료를 통해 주관적 공간을 형성하고 재료 자체의 유연성을 통해 공간의 변화 가능성을 표현해 내었다. 따라서 작품은 상대적인 공간을 지각하고 체험할 수 있는 하나의 기회가 된다. ; This study attempted to examine the researcher s works manufactured by using a smooth material of zipper to enable to form relative space with variable shapes. The works made of a daily thing of zipper brings works of art to usual space, while zipper as a work of art loses the meaning of practical function in daily life and is reborn to another work of art. Zipper holding new meaning from the works of art has metaphorical and transcendental potential. Then, zipper does not function as its original function such as covering and opening daily things but exist as a work of art and enables forming variable spaces. And, the surface formed by connecting zippers forms incidental and varied shape by bending or folding, and makes audience experience the works variously. The works made of a daily thing of zipper has numbers of meaning by making the audience experience focused on body in the phenomenologic view. In other words, the audience gives meaning to the works by zipping and unzipping the zipper, or changing its shape with hook of zipper on the basis of individual unlimited imagination. As Heidegger said Existence is space , human life itself never exists free from the most basic category of space and works of art also exist in the reality of life experiencing actual space. Therefore, the audience, space, and work of art as subject give meanings one another and exist under the relationship that each of them is reason for being mutually. Space, in which works of art are placed, experienced by the audience not only is given to them commonly but also is recognized and decided very relatively by the way that individuals accept it. In other words, it is likely that we add individual nature to an absolute space to make relative space within the current of time. In the light of material, zipper used in the works can be classified into smooth material and studies on Soft Sculpture as a work of art using smooth materials have been also accompanied. In the field of artistic expression expanded to meet with diverse tendencies, the advent of new concept, and proper use of various materials for latest 30 years of the Modern Art, Soft Sculpture has expressed numbers of artists varied intentions and concepts. This study is to find relative variable in the given space by using a smooth material and to lead the audience to accept the works of art smoothly by phenomenologic experiences. Scope of this study includes theoretical background, expression and analysis of the works. For the theoretical background, the researcher examined how the concept of space has been extended, relationship between the works of art, space, and audience by approach to the works of art in a phenomenologic manner, and phenomenologic interpretation of colors. In addition, the researcher discussed the concept and development process of Soft Sculpture, studied how smooth materials have been used in various sculptures, and analyzed how intention of production affects the finished products on the basis of investigation of several artists and their works. For the expression of work, the researcher examined experiences in variable works and phenomenologic experiences in color with the features of zipper, and studied variable spaces formed by changing the works. With respect to expression method, the researcher discussed morphological and methodological manners to visualize expressed contents. And, for the analysis of the works, the researcher analyzed seven(7) expressed works based on the theoretical background and expressed contents and methods. This study was an attempt to form a subjective space with a smooth material and to express variable of space with smoothness of material. Therefore, the works in this study give an opportunity to perceive and experience relative space.
