모라토리움적 자아의 은유

Abstract

Matthew Arnold emphasized identity achievement by oneself saying ‘Society of today boasts of high level of value, but fails to give clear solution to its members as to what life is about and what they have to do’. Art is a product reflecting identity of individuals. It, however, also achieves its universality within the time and society created and manifested by these individuals under social conditions of the time. So, art should be seemed to be not just an individual’s personal product, rather to be a metaphorical message showing the phases of the times. So, when art tries to reflect reality through symptoms beyond simple reproduction, a thing subject to art is reproduced artistically, there by having special relations with human being’s lives. Erik Homurger (Eeikson,ErikHomurger) labeled adolescence where boys and girls prepare them selves to grow up as adults as ‘moratorium’.In this paper,I name the status in which an individual fails to become part of adult society since being trapped in moratorium (grace period), during which social identity is established, as ‘identity in moratorium’ and look deeply into how to express human being’s inner story of this kind metaphorically. During this psychological grace period, an individual’s duty and responsibility as a society member is not carried out even though s/he can do her/his part with enough intelligent, physical and sexual capabilities. ‘A person in moratorium’, a term used by psychopathologists as social psychology term, represents the status of the youth of the time including me myself. Based on the fact that art essentially reflects a look of the time and expresses how external world is recognized combined with social consciousness, I intend to express inner experiences such as a sense of isolation and anxiety through participatory interpretation on external world. The person with a moratorium identity of this kind lacks a sense of ownership on the society s/he belongs to and has an attitude of on looker. In other words, since having little sense of belongings to organization, group, society and nation, s/he tends not to get involved in any surrounding events. So, s/he psychologically inclines to associate her/himself with external world only partially and temporarily rather than fully devoting to it. The moratorium identity, however, gives her/him flexibility with which s/he can live up to her/his potential since a person with a moratorium identity doesn’t have established social attitude yet. I believe that art can accommodate helpless reality and ideal together. Based on this belief, I try to explore a new direction meeting the expectation and demand of the time through my creative work. I am convinced that experiences of an artist have possibilities to become a source creating art and values. I think my work is meaningful because it lays groundwork to better understand real me. As paper showing production process of creative work, it consists of three parts – study on content, method and explanation on my own work. In phase II for content study, I look closely into how metaphoric expression has been put and make research on what psychology and philosophy of ego is about. Lastly, how a moratorium identity is defined in social psychology and its meaning are also covered here. In the second part for method study, research is made on subject matters in my work and their figurative expression through symbols and metaphors based on content study. In the last part of paper, my own work is analyzed, taking it as an opportunity to reflect on myself and explore the way to move forward.;매튜 아놀드(Matthew Arnold)는 ‘오늘날의 사회는 높은 수준의 가치에로 올라가 있지만 사람들에게 인생은 무엇이며, 무엇을 해야 하는가에 대한 명백한 해답을 주지 못하고 있다’라고 이야기 하며 스스로 자아구현을 이루어야함을 강조하였다. 예술이 개인의 자아를 통해 반영된 산물이기는 하지만 그 시대의 사회적 조건하에서 그것을 반영한 자아에 의해 창조되고 발현되는 시대적, 사회적 총체성 안에서 보편성이 성취된다고 할 수 있겠다. 이는 예술이 단순히 개인적인 전유물로서 그치는 것이 아니라 시대상을 담은 하나의 은유적인 메시지로 보아야 함을 말한다. 그래서 예술은 단순한 복제를 떠나 상징을 통해 현실을 반영하고자 할 때, 그 대상은 예술적으로 재현된 것으로서 인간의 삶과 특수한 관계에 놓이게 되는 것이다. 에릭슨(Eeikson, Erik Homurger)은 청소년기를 일컷는, 즉 소년, 소녀가 성인이 되기 위한 준비과정을 ‘모라토리움’이라 명했다고 한다. 본인은 사회적인 자아(identity)를 확립하기 위한 모라토리움(유예기간)에 머물러 기성의 성인사회에 동화되지 못하는 상태를 ‘모라토리움적 자아’라 칭하여 이런 내면의 이야기를 담아 은유적으로 표현하는 방식을 본 논문에서 연구하고자 한다. 이런 심리적 유예기는 다시 말해서 지적, 육체적, 성적(性的) 능력 면에서는 제 구실을 할 수 있는데도 불구하고 여전히 사회인으로서의 의무와 책임의 지불을 유예당하고 있는 상태이다. ‘모라토리엄 인간’이라고 정신병리학자가 사회심리학 용어로 전용하여 사용할 만큼 본인을 포함한 많은 동시대 젊은이들의 모습이다. 예술이 본질적으로 시대의 반영이며 사회의식과 결합된 객관적 현실에 대한 올바른 인식의 표현이라는 점에 근거를 두고 외적현실의 참여적인 해석을 통해 소외의식, 불안감 등 내적인 체험을 표현하고자 하였다. 이러한 모라토리움적 자아는 사회에 대하여 당사자의식이 결여되어 있으며, 방관자적 이어서 조직, 집단, 사회, 국가에 대한 귀속의식이 희박하여 매사에 일시적, 잠정적으로 밖에 대처하지 않는 습성을 지닌다. 따라서 참다운 자신의 모든 것을 바치려 하지 않으며, 부분적, 일시적으로만 자신을 연관시키려는 심리경향을 가지고 있다. 하지만 반면에 종래의 일정한 사회적 자기의 본연의 자세를 확립하지 않고 있기 때문에 자기의 다양한 가능성을 항상 마음껏 발휘할 수 있을 만한 유연성을 지니고 있다는 장점도 또 한 가지고 있다. 본인은 예술이 현실과 이상을 화해시키는 매개체가 될 수 있다고 믿기에 작업과정을 통하여 본인이 처한 상황과 기대, 요구에 부응한 새로운 가능성을 모색하고자 하였다. 작가의 삶에서 경험되어지는 것은 예술로서의 가능성과 가치를 지닌다고 생각한다. 본인은 이 작업을 통해 자신에게 진실 되게 한 발작 다가가는 바탕을 다지는데 그 의미를 두고자 하였다. 장지에 전통 한국화의 채색도구인 수간분채를 사용하여 표현하였으며 분채의 여러 가지 색상과 아교의 농도조절로 본인이 작품을 통해 나타내고자 하는 현실과 이상의 화해라는 의미의 전달에 노력하였다. 본 논문은 작품제작논문으로서의 성격을 가지고 내용적 연구, 방법적 연구, 본인작품 설명으로 이루어져 있다. Ⅱ장에서는 먼저 내용적 연구로 은유적 표현이 그동안 어떻게 표현되어 왔는지를 살펴보았다. 그리고 자아가 갖는 심리학적, 철학적 내용을 연구해 보았다. 그리고 마지막으로 모라토리엄적 자아가 사회심리학 적으로 어떻게 정의 내려 졌으며, 그것이 가지는 의미에 대해서도 알아보고자 한다. 다음으로 방법적 연구 에서는 내용적 연구를 바탕으로 본인의 작품 속에서 등장하는 소재와 그 소재들의 상징과 은유를 통한 구상적 표현에 대해 논의해 보고자 한다. 그리고 끝으로 본인의 작품을 제시, 분석함으로서 반성과 함께 앞으로의 방향을 모색하여 발전의 기회로 삼고자 하였다.
