현대 사회의 도시에 대한 표현연구

Abstract

현대 사회와 도시는 불가분의 관계이다. 이 시대의 삶은 도시에서 이루어진다고 말할 수 있으며 그것의 발달 정도에 따라 우리는 삶의 질을 논의하곤 한다. 하지만 현대 사회의 시스템에 의해 구축된 도시는 물질과 기능을 우선시하고 있으며 그에 따라 현대인들은 익명성에 의한 고독감, 인간성 상실 등의 문제를 겪게 되었다. 궁극적으로 인간에 대한 존재 가치가 흔들리게 된 것이다. 결국 현대인들은 스스로에 대한 존엄의 의미를 상실한 채 많은 문제점들을 안고 살아가고 있다. 현대 도시는 외형적으로는 안정적인 구조에 의한 질서와 인간에 대한 편의성은 발달되고 있으나 내적인 면은 성숙되지 못하고 허물어져 가고 있다. 본 연구에서는 현대 도시 사회에서 존엄의 가치를 잃어버린 현대인의 심상을 도시 이미지로 형태화하였다. 본 연구에 있어 재료는 규격화된 지우개(0.8 x 1.6 x 5.9(cm))를 사용하였다. 지우개의 기능상의 특징은 지울 수 있다는 것이고 고무의 특성으로 인한 물렁함도 있다. 또한 지우개는 공업제품으로서 일정한 단위를 이루고 있으며 지우개의 회색은 감성적 의미로서 현대인의 심리적 상태에 대입하기에 적절하였다. 본 연구는 현대 사회의 이미지를 직육면체의 도시 건축물에 지우개를 대입하여 표현하였다. 그리고 지우개 하나하나의 단위 요소를 이용한 구축과 해체의 과정을 통하여 현대사회의 도시에 대한 심상을 형태화하는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 이론적 배경에서는 현대인에게 있어서의 도시의 의미와 일상적 사물의 변화에 의해 발견되는 의미에 대하여 알아보았다. 그리고 산업 제품 또는 건축물의 기본 단위와 같은 것들을 집합 또는 쌓는 행위를 통하여 표현된 작품에 대하여 알아보았다. 표현 내용에서는 도시가 우리에게 제공하는 긍정적인 면이 있음에도 불구하고 궁극적으로는 부정적인 측면이 많다고 판단하였고 부정적 영향은 인간의 존재가치를 흔들리게 하고 있다고 보았다. 이러한 정서적인 인식을 도시 건축물의 이미지에 대입하여 그에 따라 전개되는 작품의 모티브와 내용을 밝혀 나갔다. 표현 방법에서는 기하학적 형태의 지우개의 단위 요소들을 통하여 건축물의 구축과 와해 그리고 지우개의 기능의 특징을 이용하여 마모되어 가는 과정을 보여주었다. 작품 분석에서는 개인적 체험에서 얻어진 작품 동기를 밝혔고 이론적 배경과 표현 내용 및 방법에 근거하여 분석하였다. 본 연구를 통해 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인간을 보호하기 위해 만들어졌으나 결국 인간의 존엄성까지 해하고 있는 도시의 이미지를 회색의 규격화되고 개성 없는 지우개의 모습으로 표현하는데 적합하였다. 따라서 지우개 하나하나의 단위는 각각의 현대인의 삶이 영유되고 있는 기하학적 단위의 건축물일 수도 있고 현대인 그 자체일 수도 있다. 둘째, 지우개를 하나의 단위로 보고 이를 구축하였으나 고무의 특성에 의해 유연하게 마모되고 와해되는 모습으로 표현하였다. 이는 구조적인 견고함과 기하학적이라는 특징의 현대 도시의 건축물들을 그것과는 다른 재료로 보임으로서 현대 도시의 모순된 상황에 대한 심상을 보일 수 있었다. 셋째, 지우개에 의해 기하학적으로 쌓인 모습의 일부분이 마모되어지는 모습은 마치 견고한 도시가 허물어져 가는듯한 모습을 보여준다. 이와 같이 회색의 지우개를 통해 보여지는 기계적이고 공업적인 도시의 이미지들은 나타내어 자연과 인간 본연의 모습과 멀어지고 있는 현대 사회의 모습을 나타낸다. 이는 모두 우리 사회가 인간과 발전 위주의 산업 사회 사이에서의 불균형적인 조합으로 인해 발생하고 있는 문제점들을 숙고하게 한다.;Our modern society is inseparably related with cities. It may be said that in this age we live our life in cities, and we often discuss our life quality engaged with development of cities. However, the cities constructed under a system of our modern society put highest priorities on materials and functions, and thus, our modern men suffer from alienation caused by anonymity as well as from loss of humanity. Ultimately, the value of human beings has come to be shaken. Thus, our modern men are faced with various problems, losing the meaning of their dignity. Our modern cities are well developed externally in terms of stable structure and order as well conveniences for men, but they are not matured internally, being collapsed. In such circumstances, this study was aimed at expressing, through reinterpretation of urban building images, the mental picture of our modern men who are living in well-developed modern society but have lost their value of dignity for themselves. For this study, the researcher used some specified eraser (0.8 x 1.6 x 5.9). Its function is erasion, while its property is similar to rubber, namely flexible. In addition, it is sort of industrial commodity produced in a certain lot, and particularly, a gray eraser may well be properly substituted into our modern men's psychological state, being a metaphor of a strong emotion. The purpose of this study was to express the images of our modern cities through construction and deconstruction of unit erasers. For this purpose, the researcher substitutes erasers into cubic urban buildings. As a theoretical background of this study, the researcher reviewed what cities imply for our modern men and examined the meanings of the ordinary objects changing, and thereupon, surveyed the works expressed by merging or stacking the units of industrial products or buildings. Despite the positive aspects of the cities for us, the researcher judged that they have more negative aspects after all, which serve to threaten the values of our human existence. Such an emotional perception was substituted into urban building images to analyze the motives and contents of the works being developed accordingly. Then, geometric unit elements of erasers were used together with their properties to express the process of the buildings being constructed and demolished. Thus, the researcher relied on her personal experiences to set the motives for works and analyzed them in terms their theoretical background, contents and methods of their expression. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; first, it was possible to express in the specified an impersonal forms of erasers the images of the cities built to protect men but demage our dignity. After all, each unit of eraser may represent the geometric unit or building where our modern men live their life or our modern men themselves; second, the erasers were built as units but their properties were adequate enough to express the forms being worn out and demolished. The erasers may well be contrasted with our modern buildings characterized by structural intensity and geometric forms to highlight the contradictory images of our cities; third, the geometric eraser stacks with some parts of them worn are reminiscent of our solid cities being demolished. The mechanic and industrial images of cities are expressed by the gray erasers only to feature our modern society being farther distanced from nature and our original look. All in all, the works urge us to reflect on the problems cause by the unbalanced combinations in the industrial society devoted only to men and our growth.
