전통민가를 중심으로 살펴본 제주도 건축의 지역성과 그 현대적 적용에 관한연구

Abstract

현재 활발하게 진행되고 있는 건축에 대한 다원론적인 접근은 그동안 근대건축이 양산해낸 폐해들에 대한 진지한 반성에서 비롯되어진 것이라고 보여진다. 근대건축이 저질렀던 가장 큰 실수는 인류가 발견해낸 새로운 기술과 재료가 모든 것을 극복할 수 있다고 믿은 그 오만한 자신감에 있었다. 특정지역과 도시의 특수성을 고려하지 않음으로써 지역문화의 고유성과 건축의 의미의 상실을 초래했으며 인간 소외의 문제를 낳았다. 서로간의 '다름'과 '차이'를 인정하지 않고 '보편적'이라는 미명아래 획일적인 문화와 사고를 요구했던 것이다. 이제 더 이상 우리가 '근대건축'을 찬양하지 않음은 그것에서 우리가 얻은 것보다는 더 중요한 무언가를 잃어버렸기 때문인 것으로 보여진다. 다원론적인 경향으로 흐르고 있는 현재의 건축 담론의 모습은 다소 혼돈스런 인상까지 준다. 그 중 하나의 흐름이 '지역주의'에 대한 논의이다. 여기에서는 '제주도'라는 우리나라에서도 지정학적으로, 인문·사회학적으로도 특별한 위치에 있는 지역에 대해 '지역성'이라는 주제로 얘기를 풀어나가려고 한다. 지역성은 그 지역에서 오랫동안 축적되어진 그 지역만이 갖는 고유한 성질이다. 그렇기 때문에 지역의 전통과 밀접한 연관이 있다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구의 내용은 제주도 건축의 지역성에 대한 논의와 그것의 현대적 적용에 관한 것이다. 그리고 그 지역성에 대한 논의의 출발을 전통민가에서 시작하려고 한 것이다. 무엇보다 민가건축은 환경에 대한 정직한 대응 내지는 적응의 산물이라고 보여지기 때문에 특정 지역의 지역성을 논하기에는 더없이 좋은 자료가 되리라고 여겨지기 때문이다. 본 논문은 제주도 전통민가를 통해서 제주도 건축의 지역성을 논의하고 그것의 현대적 적용에 필요한 계획요소들을 제안하는 내용으로 구성되었다. 그 중에서도 본 논문은 자연환경적인 요인에 초점을 맞추어 제주도 건축의 지역성에 접근하였다. 특히 다풍지대로서 '바람'이라는 기후요소는 제주인들의 삶과 생활에 있어서 지대한 영향력을 미쳐왔다. 열악한 환경에서도 그러한 제한적인 요인들을 극복하고자 했던 제주인들의 슬기와 의지가 전통건축에 고스란히 담겨져 있다. 제주도 전통민가 건축은 남단데 위치하면서도 평면구조에 있어서는 겹집구조를 가지고 있고 동시에 '상방마루'라는 남방적 요소를 가지고 있다. 그리고 전체적인 공간구성을 보면 올래(도입부)-올래목(전곡부)-마당(발전부)-안뒤(종결부)라는 리듬의 독특한 공간구성을 이루고 있다. 그리고 다른 도서지역에 비해 철저히 별동 배치를 이루고 있으며 전체적으로는 폐쇄적인 모습을 보이고 있으나 내부공간을 살펴보면 개방적인 요소들을 함께 지니고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그리고 이들 많은 특징적 요소들의 기저에는 기후적인 요인들이 깔려 있음을 알 수 있다. 활발히 진행되고는 있지만 아직은 시작단계에 머무르고 있는 제주도 현대건축에 있어서의 지역성의 현대적 적용은 앞으로 공간에 대한 진지하고도 다양한 접근과 해석이 필요하다고 보여진다. 그리고 그에 따른 다양한 건축어휘들의 축적이 이루어져야 할 것이다. 본 논문이 그것의 좋은 출발점이 되었으면 한다.;It is believed very desirable to study the vernacular house styles, and thereby provide base materials that might be applied on the architectural designing attempt of modern houses of today, as the former is generally built in such a simple form as to fulfil the primitive and fundamental human wants in a most direct and candid manner. Besides, even for the only purpose of preserving our traditional heritage of culture, the vernacular housing from which has been cherished long by our forefathers is deserve to be intensively studied and tried to be followed as far as possible by the modern architecture. The study has endeavored to research and appreciate the traditional architectural designs of the vernacular houses. The process of study is as follows : First, graspting the social and environmental character of Je-ju island and traditional housing in Je-ju island. Second, Comparison of traditional houses in Jeju island with in other places. Third, understanding the unique factor of traditional housing in Je-ju island. Fourth, study of cases in contemporary architecture in Je-ju island. The last of process, proposal of applicable design factors on the contemporary architectures. In the conclusion, the main concept is both the creation of spatial layer and the openness and colosure. In layout plan, courtyard, shelters and fence structures can be the factors of composition. Besides, the concept of design is as follows : ·the experience of rhythmical development of space ·the application of traditional 'Olae' space ·the application of various and vernacular materials ·the appliction of relatively high opening ration and variable opening ·the proper layout and design of stone fence First of all, it is needed, various interpretation and approach for space. Then various and vernacular architectural languages will be accumulated.
