사진으로 표상된 도시공간

Abstract

이 논문은 사진을 통하여 도시를 시각화하여 도시를 해석하고, 그것이 어떠한 기능을 하고 있는 지 파악하는 것이다. 그러기 위해서 선결되어야 하는 것은 지금까지의 도시의 역사에 대한 고찰이다. 첫째로, 도시공간의 탄생이 서구에서 비롯된 만큼 그 시작에 대해 고찰하고 더불어 근대에 들어서면서 자본주의가 도시체제를 어떻게 구축하고 있는 지 파악한다. 서구 근대도시의 역사를 식민시대라는 특수한 사회적 배경을 갖고 있는 한국의 도시에 적용하기는 어렵다. 따라서 한국의 경우는 도시변화가 본격화된 식민시대부터를 근대화의 시작이라고 상정하고 문헌적 고찰을 했다. 다음으로 역사적 사실들에 근거하여 타인 즉 일본과 미국에 의한 한국의 근대화와 1960년대 이후의 자주적 근대화에 대해 언급한다. 둘째로, 우리가 지금 살고 있는 도시공간이 겪어왔던 사회적 배경들을 파악하고 그 시대성이 현재의 도시에 어떻게 자리매김을 하고 있는 지 분석한다. 마지막으로, 이 도시공간이 사진가에 의해 어떻게 시각화 되었는가에 대한 고찰이다. 뉴욕의 도시공간을 배경으로 하여 노동이라는 사회현상을 언급한 루이스 하인과, 도시공간을 이미지로 분석, 표현한 배러니스 애봇은 동시대의 사진가 본 논문에서는 미야모토 류지와 가브리엘레 바질리코가 언급되었다. 와는 분명히 차이를 보인다. 최근의 사진가들은 도시공간을 다양한 사회문화적 맥락들이 얽혀 있는 텍스트로 보고 사진으로 하나하나 풀어가고 있다. 이 논문에서는 시간의 축에 따라 재편성되는 도시공간을 사진기의 눈을 빌어 말하고 있다. 삶의 장소로서의 도시공간과 시대성을 담는 시간성이라는 측면에서 도시는 인간생활의 모든 것을 함축하고 있으므로, 도시를 해석하는 방법은 여러 가지가 있을 수 있다. 철학, 물리학, 지리학, 그리고 사회학에 이르기까지 다양한 관점에서 도시는 연구의 대상이 되기 충분했다. 우리는 도시를 보고 있지만 무의식적일 만큼 본다는 것에 익숙해져 있고, 의문을 가질 필요를 못 느끼기 때문에 도시를 텍스트로 보고 이루어지는 연구는 여전히 익숙치 않다. 이에 시간의 멈춤, 저장이라는 사진기의 기능과 본인의 해석으로 본 논문을 통해 우리가 살아가는 이 도시공간을 연구한다. ; The objective of this thesis is to understand the role/function of the city via analyzing the city seen through the camera lens. Preceding such analysis, historical investigation of existence of the city is conducted with highest priority. First, the beginnings of the city in the West must be investigated further along with role and impact of capitalism in structure of modern cities. It is unarguable applying history of the modern cities of the West to Korea where societal background is based in colonialism is difficult. Therefore, colonial period where active transformation of the Korean cities took place is assumed to be the starting of the modernization and literature based investigation is conducted from that point on. Moreover, based on historical facts, 3rd party driven modernization of Korea and independent 1st party driven modernization after 1960s is also contemplated. Secondly, examine and analyze various changes in societal backgrounds experienced by the city and role of specific periods in transformation of the city form. Lastly, examination of how the city has been visualized by the photographers is considered. Specific social situation portrayed in the background of the city by Louis Hine and timelessness of the city portrayed via image analysis by Berenis Abbot is clearly different from other contemporary photographers. This very concept is not very far from the early notions that photographs represent reality. Although the city maybe represented via more provocative and realistic mediums, these photographers have unlocked and captured hidden stories of the modern city. Through the lens of the camera, time driven rearrangement of the city is portrayed in this thesis. With the physical and temporal aspects of the city that caresses human lives, its complexities can be analyzed by numerous ways. With its complexities cities were significant enough to be researched by the philosophers, physicists, geologists, and sociologists. However, the city that we visually connect with everyday is still unfamiliar to evaluate visually. Our incapability to read and understand the city maybe the result of inseparable everyday interactions with the city that numbs our senses, becoming unaware/ignorant/unconscious of the very environment that we live in. Therefore, holding time still with the storage capability of the camera and the beholders analysis, I attempt to reassess the city that we live in.
