자연의 순환적 이미지 표현

Abstract

자연의 모든 생명체는 항상 변화하고 있다. 그들은 한 순간도 쉬지 않고 생성과 소멸의 물질대사를 반복하며 생명을 유지해 나간다. 또한 하나의 개체가 소멸한다 해도 그것이 다시 새로운 세대의 시작으로 이어짐으로써 생명의 고리를 이어간다. 이러한 순환적인 생명력을 갖는 각각의 생명체로 구성되는 자연은 그 역시 끊임없이 순환하는 질서를 갖는 거대한 유기체라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구는 자연의 무한한 생명력에 주목하고, 생성, 성장, 소멸을 반복하는 자연의 순환적 과정에 내포된 미적 요소를 탐구하는데 그 의의를 둔다. 본 연구의 목적은 자연의 일부인 식물의 생명현상을 분석하여 그 안에 내포되어 있는 자연의 순환적 이미지를 시각화하는데 있다. 본 연구에서는 동양의 순환적 자연관과 식물의 순환적인 생명현상을 이론적 배경으로 제시하였고, 자연의 순환적 이미지를 표현한 20세기 작가들의 작품을 살펴보았으며, 식물의 생명현상을 통한 자연의 생성, 성장, 소멸을 거듭하는 순환과정을 연구의 대상으로 하였다. 작품표현에서는 나무와 테라코타, 철을 재료로 하여 자연의 순환적 이미지를 나타내었고 표현된 작품 7점을 이론적 배경, 표현내용, 재료 및 방법에 근거하여 분석하였다. 본 연구를 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 생성과 소멸을 무한히 반복하는 자연의 순환성은 원으로의 방향성을 갖는 곡선형의 나무로 표현되었다. 곡선으로 휘어진 듯한 나무의 형태는 역동성과 동적 긴장감을 갖고 분출하려는 자연의 생명력을 보여 주었다. 성장을 향한 무한한 에너지를 지닌 생명의 근원적 형태는 테라코타를 재료로 하여 응축하고 확산하는 유기적 mass를 갖는 형태로 나타났다. 동양철학에서 말하는 세계를 이루는 두 가지 요소이며 자연의 생성과 변화에 참여하는 음과 양의 이미지는 세로로 켠 나무의 반쪽을 반대 방향으로 위치하게 하여 각각 나무의 안쪽과 바깥쪽을 보임으로써 표현되었으며 새로운 생명의 잉태를 위한 음과 양의 결합은 테라코타와 유기적인 철의 형태를 이용하여 이들을 서로 연결시킴으로써 나타났다. 생명체의 소멸의 이미지는 나무의 메마르고 비틀린 형태로 드러났고 부분적으로 불에 그을리는 방법으로 강조되었으며, 소멸의 과정에서 이어지는 새로운 생성의 이미지는 제작 과정 중에 떨어져 나온 나무 조각이 다시 모여 솟아오르는 형태로 표현되었다. 나무의 본체와 그것의 조각으로 재결합된 형태는 서로 거리를 두고 배치되어 시간의 흐름에 따른 생명체의 소멸과 새로운 생명의 탄생을 암시하였다. 형태 면에서 곡선을 그리는 원통형의 나무와 유기적인 형태의 테라코타와의 결합은 굳은 대지를 뚫고 나오는 새싹의 부드럽지만 강한 생명의 의지를 느껴지게 하였다. 끊임없이 생성과 소멸을 반복하며 순환하는 자연은 하나의 거대한 유기적 생명력을 가지고 있으며 자연의 일부로 살아가는 인간은 이 거대한 유기체의 구성원으로써 상호 작용하고 의존하며 생존할 수밖에 없다. 따라서 자연의 질서와 법칙을 탐구하고 이를 이해하는 것은 현대인들에게 또 다른 삶에 관한 태도를 제시 할 수 있을 것이다. ; All beings in mother nature are always changing. They never stop changing but maintain their life going through the sequence of birth, growth and death. Although an individual must be vanished, it s species never fade away because other individual of next generation will survive their forefather. Therefore, mother nature is a huge organic body with cyclic order of life. This study never concentrates on human alone, but on the beauty of nature s cyclic life phenomenon and this is the meaning of this study. The purpose of this study is to analyse the life cycle of plant that represents all nature s lives and visualize the meaning of nature s cyclic life phenomenon. This study presents the eastern view of nature s cyclic feature and cyclic life phenomenon of plant for theoretical basis and studies many works that were made by famous artists who lived in twentieth century and deal with same message with this paper. To say, this paper is about nature s cyclic feature that is represented by life phenomenon of plant. To satisfy this purpose, wood, terracotta and steel were adopted for material of works that will connote the meaning of nature s life phenomenon and all works are composed of seven pieces that were analysed by theoretical basis, content, material and expression method in this paper. The conclusion of this study can be summarized as following. The cyclic feature of nature s life was expressed as wooden works of circular shape. The curved shape of wooden works represent the unlimited energy of life that spouts with fast velocity and dynamic tension. The basic shape with endless energy of growth was expressed by terracotta works that were formed with organic shape. The positive and the passive which are two basis of eastern philosophy was represented by two wooden parts that are constituent of one trunk and divided with vertical direction. The connectivity of the positive and the passive was also represented by two connecting part of steel. The image of extinction was given shape to be a dead twisted trunk and emphasized by making the surface slightly fumed. The image of a new life connected by the extinction is expressed using the pieces of wood which is separated from the body of wood. The combination of wood, terracotta and steel made themselves in contrast. The combination of the curved wooden work and terracotta which has an organic form expressed the strong will of the bud. The circulating nature which repeats birth and extinction has the will of an organic life and the human being who is a part of the huge organic body has to live interacting and depending each other. The study and understanding of the law of nature will present another attitude of life to the man of today.
