The main goal of education on geometry is to form the concept of geometric shape. To build up the concept of geometric shape is based on student s concept on it. Therefore the study of students understanding about the geometric shape is needed to accomplish a effective teaching-learning. In addition, spatial sense is stressed in geometry of current mathematics curriculum, three dimensional space and solid geometry have become more important. The rectangular solid is the most basic factor and learning of solid geometric shape is first subject to be dealt in Korean elementary mathematics curriculum. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to know the understanding of elementary students concept on the rectangular solid in the field of solid geometric shape. First of all, the previous studies on educational curriculum, psychology and teaching-learning principle, etc., were studied. They utilized two methodology in understanding student s rectangular solid as follows: 1. The examination of student s drawing of solid geometry objects on the two dimensional plane by the elementary school students. 2. The examination of student s counting of the numbers of arrays of cubes or student s finding the characteristics of rectangular solid on the two dimensional plane. The present study adopted the latter one. The reason is because almost all elementary school students live in the three-dimensional space and they get their mathematical experience from the two dimensional shapes. Therefore, they need to study handling the two dimensional representation in their living world. The main purposes of the present study are as follows: 1. To categorize the types of students problem solving strategies. 2. To make clear the progress of students understanding of the rectangular solid. 3. Finally, to know the apriori concept of the elementary school students in our country. Therefore questions in the present study are as follows: 1. How can be the types of students solutions strategies categorized? 2. Do these types have unique characteristics and differences by grade? 3. What is the rate of right and wrong answers by grade? The present study was approached with the following method: The subjects were 435 students, ranging from the first grades to the sixth grade, in E elementary school located in Seoul. Two classes from every grade were chosen and 80 students out of 435 students were closely interviewed. The test instrument developed in a Battista & Clements Study (1996) was used. The picture of a set of cubes was shown to the students. Students were asked questions. The questions were to know how many cubes would be needed when the cubes were stacked in order to make a set of cubes. A set of cubes consists of 4 cubes in length, 4 cubes in width and 3 cubes in height with the shape of rectangular arrays of cubes. The "wooden cubes" were used to get a detailed results during the interview. After all data were gathered, they were analyzed inductively. For this, all kinds of students language, picture, and symbols were analyzed. Therefore, 5 types were found after integrating the similar strategies. The main results of the study were as follows: 1. Students solution strategies could be categorized. The students conceptualizes the set of cubes as its faces(31%), as its columns/rows(18%), as forming a rectangular array organized into layer(33%), formula(16%), and others(2%). The types could be subdivided; In the case of conceptualizing as its faces, there were one face counting(A1), two faces counting(A2), three faces counting(A3), four faces counting(A4), five faces counting(A5), six faces counting(A6), seven faces counting(A7), and eight faces counting(A8). In the case of conceptualizing as its columns/rows, there were unit cube counting in twelve or sixteen columns (B1), unit cube counting in the column of two faces(B2), unit cube counting in the column of three faces or interior unit cube counting(B3), unit cube counting in the column of four faces or interior unit cube counting(B4), unit cube counting in the column of five faces or interior unit cube counting(B5), unit cube counting in column of the six faces or interior unit cube counting(B6), irregular unit counting(B7), unit cube counting in every way(B8). In the case of conceptualizing as forming a rectangular array organized into layer, there were every counting subunits of layers(C1), layer adding/iteration(C2), layer multiplying(C3). 2. There was a remarkable difference in strategies among various grade students. Sixty-five percent of the 1st grade students conceptualized a set of cubes in terms of its faces. However, 45 percent of the 2nd grade students used faces concept(37% - columns/rows concept). Forty-three percent of the 3rd grade students used layering strategies(39% - face strategies, 14% - columns/rows). Especially, 64 percent of the 4th grade students conceptualized the set of cubes as forming a rectangular array organized into layer. It means these students are already accustomed to using this concept. Twenty-five percent of 5th grade students used the formula. The students above the 4th grade started to solve the problems by structuring the problems, even though they did not learn the formula at school, yet. Sixty-eight percent of the 6th grade students used the mathematical formula(L x W x H). It means that they have a cognitive construction, which leads to organize the basic scheme of rectangular solid by analyzing face, column and layer. 3. Regarding the rate of correct answers, the 1st grade students had 9%, 2nd grade 16%, 3rd grade 40%, 4th grade 61%, 5th grade 64%, and the 6th grade 96%. It means almost over half of the 4th grade students and older can understand the concept of rectangular arrays of cubes apriori. Regarding the rate of incorrect answers, it was decreased as grade increased. Generally, the students who conceptualized a set of cubes in terms of faces, could not find the correct answers. They could not understand the face from the front side, but understood 3 faces from the rectangular array of cubes. Even though they had an incomplete concept of rectangular solid, they could understand it and have their own strategies to solve the problem. There was also conceptional confusion of invisible space, volume and four side area, volume and surface area, and so on and so forth among the incorrect type answers. Consequently, elementary school students had approached to solve the problems. These approaches could be categorized by the conceptualization the set of cubes as its faces, as its columns/rows, as forming a rectangular array organized into layer, formula, and etc. Recommendations as a result of the present study are as follows: 1. The students of the 1st grade stay in the visible stage (level I) by van-Hiele. The students of the 2nd grade were transferred from the visible stage (level I) to the understanding of analytical stage (level II). The students of the 3rd grade reached the understanding of analytical stage (level II) incompletely. The students of the 4th, 5th, 6th grades had the understanding of analytical stage (level II). The students of the 6th grade were in the analytical (level II) and theoretical array stage (level III). When the students reach the 4th grade, they can get the psychological and learning preparation. However in our 6th educational curriculum, the concept and the nature of rectangular solid are taught for the 5th grade students at the 2nd semester, and it is also taught for the 5th and 6th grade students in the 7th educational curriculum. This is why this concept of rectangular solid needs to be taught to the 4th grade students. 2. Since there is no learning about the solid geometric shape for the 3rd and 4th grade students in the 6th curriculum as well as in the 7th curriculum, no useful educational effect could be expected. This is why this concept of solid geometric shape needs to be taught to the 3rd and 4th grade students. 3. Finally, our curriculum should include the learning of solid geometric shape to the whole grade students, and teachers should have the teaching-learning method with the appropriate understanding of students solid geometric shape and their developmental level.
