Landon Ronald의 연가곡 'A cycle of life'에 대한 분석 연구

Abstract

영국 예술가곡은 대부분 작자 미상으로 전해져 왔으나 다우런드(John Dowland 1563-1626)와 캄피안(Thomas Campian 1567-1620) 등의 류트 송(Lute song) 작곡으로 인해 활기를 띄기 시작했다. 그 이후 엘리자베스왕조 시대에 류트 송이 장려되고 문학의 거장인 William Shakespeare(1564-1616)를 만나는 시대적 상황이 더해져 예술가곡 작곡의 꽃을 피우게 되었다. 영국국립음악원에서 페리(Hubert Parry 1848-1918), 스텐포드(Charles Villiers Stanford 1852 -1924) 와 함께 학습한 랜던 로날드(Landon Ronald 1873-1939)는 20세기 영국의 지휘자이자 피아니스트이며 작곡가이다. 로날드는 작곡가라기보다는 지휘자로서 1904-1907년까지 런던 심포니 오케스트라의 상임 지휘자로 활동을 하였고, 1914년까지는 뉴 심포니 오케스트라의 지휘자로 활약을 하였다. 또한 그는 반주자로서 멜바(Nellie Melba 1857-1934)의 미국 공연을 함께 하기도 하였다. 1900년대에는 피아니스트로 자신의 첫번 곡을 녹음한 20세기 초 클래식 레코딩의 개척자로 더 알려져 있다. 그는 또한 현재까지 알려져 있는 O Lovely Night와 Down in the Forest 이외에 오늘날 300여 곡의 가곡을 남긴 예술 가곡 작곡가이기도 하다. 본인이 이 논문에서 다루고자 하는 L. Ronald의 연가곡 A Cycle of Life는 5개의 연가곡으로, 인생과 사랑에 관한 주제를 사계절에 비유한 Harold Simpson의 시를 가사로 하고 있다. Prelude, Down in the Forest (spring), Love, I have won you (summer), The winds are calling (autumn), Drift down, drift down (winter)의 부제를 가진 이 다섯 곡의 연가곡은 인생과 사랑 등의 주제를 전주곡, 봄, 여름, 가을 그리고 겨울의 사계절에 비유하여 각 계절의 분위기와 가사의 정서에 어울리는 선율과 화성, 리듬 및 구성으로 만들어진 매우 서정적이며 아름다운 곡이라 할 수 있다. 이 논문은 본인의 석사과정 이수를 위한 졸업연주회 연주곡이었던 L. Ronald의 연가곡 A Cycle of Life를 시의 내용과 해석, 곡의 형식과 조성, 선율, 리듬, 화성, 다이나믹, 박자 및 빠르기 등을 중심으로 연구 분석한 ; Most British art songs had been transmitted with the unknown composers but it made them begin to be enlivened for John Dowland (1563-1626) and Thomas Campian (1567-1620) to compose Lute songs. Afterward, for the Elizabethan era, it was the encouragement of Lute songs and the condition of the era, the appearance of William Shakespeare that enabled the art songs to come into blossom. Landon Ronald was a British conductor, pianist, and composer in 20th century who had been taught with Hubert Parry(1848-1918) and Charles Villiers Stanford(1852-1924) in Royal College of Music. L. Ronald had served as , not a composer but a conductor, senior conductor in London Symphony Orchestra from 1904 to 1907 and played an active part in New Symphony Orchestra as its conductor until 1914. In addition, he accompanied Melba on the piano in Melba s American performance. In 1900s, He was much more known as the pioneer of early 20th century in the classic recording who recorded his first music as a pianist. Today, He is also evaluated to be an art song composer that left about 300 pieces of song except O Lovely Night and Down in the Forrest which have been known until now. The topic of this paper, L. Ronald s love song, A Cycle of Life consists of 5 pieces of love song and the words of it is Harold Simpson s poetry that compares the topic of life and love to four seasons. These five pieces of love song with the subtitles, Prelude, Down in the Forrest(spring), Love, I have won you(summer), The winds are calling(autumn), Drift down, drift down(winter) can be said to be a very emotional and beautiful song that compare the topic of life and love to prelude, spring, summer, autumn, winter, and are made up of the melody, harmony, rhythm, and construction which match well with the atmosphere of four seasons and the feeling of the words of them. In this paper, Ronald s love song, A cycle of Life has been analyzed which was the song in the author s required recital for Mater of Music Degree and the focus of the analysis is not only on the content of the poetry and interpretation of it but also on the forms, construction, melody, rhythm, harmony, dynamic and tempo of the song.
