; In Western music history, the late 19th and early 20th century was the last phase in Romanticism, and a time when musical language was undergoing a new change. This new movement can be summed up as thus; late German Romanticism which had been the core since the age of Classicism and its two opposing forces: the nationalism of Eastern Europe and French Impressionism. Impressionism, which was led by Claude Debussy(1892-1918), especially was a great influence on thec of the 20th century. On the other hand, there was French Neo-classicism, which defied Debussy s Impressionist music and followed the Classic concepts of objectivity, formality and control of emotion; these musicians were called <Les six>. The following thesis analyzes the works of Debussy-the representative of Impressionist music-and Francis Poulenc(1899-1963), who was a member of the <Les six> ;「Premie re Rhapsodie pour Clarinette et Piano」and 「Sonate pour Clarinette et Piano」, respectively; and examines these two different schools of modern French music. This study consists of an analysis of the musical style of the two musicians and the two pieces. 「Premie re Rhapsodie pour Clarinette et Piano」, included late works of Debussy, has compound ternary form and middle section having two comical Scherzando. It is free style of Debussy s harmonic form out of traditional style that consists of mode, contrast of major or minor key, repeated radical modulation. In addition, triplet and syncopation are used often in rhythm part. This is property of Debussy s music that creates diverse rhythm styles. A member of the school of neoclassicism, Poulenc s「Sonate pour Clarinette et Piano」 composes three titled movements ; the first and third shows compound ternary form, and the second introduces free style. Each movement or each part has clear theme melody of playing melody is repetition. Unexpected entry of main melody, subject motivated by main melody and figure of accessory voices emphasizes relationship between movements and shows cyclic form.-
