Abstract
; Recently sounds of many instruments have been synthesized artificially by the Sound Synthesis Technique taking advantage of development of advanced computer industry. There are at least two studies essential for the sound synthesis: the structural analysis of an instrument and the timbre as well as acoustic analysis of an instrument. While the timbre analysis of western classic musical instruments have been already done or are in process for the sound synthesis, that of Korean classic musical instrument has never been done yet. The special characteristics of Korean music instruments that are different from the westerns make it worth to study. In this thesis, the structure as well as timbre of Daegeum, one of Korean wind instruments, were analyzed by Sound Spectrum and compared with Flute, a western instrument similar to Daegeum in structure. First, in general feature and physical structure, Daegeum and Flute appear to be similar : the pitch and the dynamic of sound are controlled by the shape of lips contacted to the embrouchure and by strength of wind blown to the embrouchure, and both are wind instruments with cylindrical-bore body. However, there are many differences in material they are made of, the length of instruments, and difference in number of fingerholes. Also there is a subtle but important difference in playing technique and posture. Secondly, in terms of timbre, Daegeum has a special vibration plate called Cheung , which creates characteristic timbre of Daegeum. I compare the timbre of Daegeum with that of Flute by a classic spectrum analysis, Fourier Method and showed that timbre difference of two instruments come from the volume or the amplitude of the harmonics, but not from the intervals of the harmonics. It is shown that the spectrums of two instruments presents different pattern in the low register, but in the middle or high register the patterns of two spectrums become more similar each other. The volume (amplitude) control for both instruments appears to become easier in higher sound range. Daegeum shows softer sound than Flute s rough sound in the lower range and some noise or background sound, which seems to be a basic sound of Daegeum, in higher range. In comparing playing techniques of amplitude vibrato, a metal wind instrument Flute has faster and more spectacular techniques than a wood wind instrument Daegeum made of bamboo. In summary, I analyzed the characteristic sound resulting from the vibration of Cheung of Daegeum by the spectrum analysis and compared it with that of Flute. More studies on Korean classic instruments are remained to be done for the future development of Korean music academy as well as industry. It is necessary that not only the simple comparison of timbre between western and Korean instruments, but also further studies in acoustic aspect should be done simultaneously.
