Abstract
; This study is an analysis of politics that feminist media are practicing for Feminist Movement through Media and a research on dilemma that these media face during the process. The subjects of the study were Yeoseongshinmun (Women s Newspaper) and If, which are representative feminist media. The politics, alternativeness and the situations of dilemma were analyzed. Literature review, in-depth interview and participative observation were used for this study. For literature review, previous studies and contents of those media were used. In-depth interviews were performed with staffs, feminist movement personnel and readers of those media. Participative observation included experiences and cases of the present researcher who had worked for the two media, Yeoseongshinmun (Women s Newspaper) and If. The contents and the results of this study are as follows. Firstly, feminist media in Korea are closely related with feminist movement. Liberal feminist movement in the 1980s influenced the establishment and editorial directions of Yeoseongshinmun and the popularization of feminism and sexual politics in the 1990s influenced the establishment and editorial directions of If. Secondly, they, as journalistic media, pursued feminist journalism and exercised its political influence utilizing media. Those media enhanced the importance of women-related news that were often ignored by major media, and sought for new news with regard to women. Additionally, they displayed their political power as feminist campaigners through women-oriented cultural activities. Thirdly, the alternativeness and political characteristics of feminist media presented a dilemma in becoming feminist campaigners and journalistic media regardless of their achievements. Because those media failed to keep distance from the powers of feminist movement, they had difficulties in having identity as journalistic media. With financial difficulties and internal problems with the organization and operation, these situations threatened the identity of the media. Fourthly, people thought that readers of these media would be more distinguished than those of other media. However, those who these media considered to be their readers according to age and occupation were different from the actual readers. From the result of this study, the real readers of the media did not simply find news from those media but they acquired the sense of value of life as well as the orientation and goals of life. They considered these media as colleagues and helpers. Fifthly, major media have recently started to deal with feminism as a ‘ sensible item’ and there are an increasing number of various feminist media with different styles and contents. It has become very critical how to survive this situation. The strategy for popularization attempted by these media diluted the feministic character of these media, and admitted diverse kinds of news for general women. However, this study also found that the true popularization of feminist media would mean the development of an easier and more interesting way to meet readers without losing thorough feminism. A possible strategy for this is to develop a feministic writing method.
