인간의 몸을 통한 존재로서의 자아 표현

Abstract

인간은 사회 속에서 태어나고 죽는다. 사회화의 과정을 거쳐서 자아가 형성되고 그러한 관계 속에서 언어나 문화, 생활방식 등과 상호작용하며 존재한다. 현대사회는 고도의 성장을 거쳐 인간에게 사회, 경제, 정치, 제도의 변화와 고도 문명의 이기를 안겨 주었다. 그러나 현대사회의 문명의 발전은 인간을 기계의 한 부속품으로 전락시키고 획일화된 삶과 부조리한 인간성, 인간 소외에까지 이르게 하였다. 현대의 기계적이고 물질적인 사회 속에서 존재로서의 진정한 자아의 모습을 상실하고 있는 것이다. 본 연구는 이러한 사회문제를 자아의 내면적 문제와 연결시켜 예술의 수행적 과정을 통해 자아를 극복하는 방식으로 표현하고자 한다. 예술의 수행적 과정은 인체를 사용한 작업 전반으로 현대사회의 자아의 모습을 보여줌으로써 자아의 내면적 성찰과 감상자와의 외적인 소통을 하고자 하기 위함이다. 본 연구를 위해 I장 서론에서 연구의 목적과 내용, 방법을 밝히고 II장에서는 이론적 배경으로 현대사회와 인간, 인간의 몸을 통한 존재로서의 자아의 의미를 고찰하며 현대 조각에 있어서의 인체 개념의 변화에 따른 앤터니 곰리와 마크 퀸의 작업을 살펴보았다. III장에서는 가장 근원적이고 유일한 정체성의 영역인 인간의 신체를 대상으로 현대사회의 자아의 모습을 표현한다. 여러 가지 복합재 료를 사용해 본 연구자의 신체를 캐스팅하는 등 모든 작업 과정이 예술의 수행적 과정으로 드러난다. 신체를 직접 캐스팅한다는 것은 예술의 표현적 기능만이 아닌 자기 수행적이고 고행적인 작업과정으로 받아들여 질 수 있고 현대사회의 자아의 정체성 상실을 사회의 부정적 세력에 의한 복합성에 기인하지 않고 자아의 인간성 내부, 즉 인간 자체에 대한 심리적인 문제로서 접근하고 있다. 그래서 인간의 몸, 신체를 표현하는 것이고 무기력한 현대사회의 소멸하는 인간의 모습으로 형상화함으로써 역설적인 존재로서의 자아의 의미와 자아극의 의미를 전달하고 있다. IV장은 이러한 연구배경 하에 작품 7점을 제시하고 표현내용 및 재료, 방법에 근거하여 분석하였다. 이상의 연구에서 얻은 결론으로서 V장에서는 현대사회의 자아를 극복하기 위해 자신의 신체를 캐스팅하고 작업과정을 체험함으로써 주체 내부의 정신활동에 의해 스스로 존재의 의미를 찾고 내적 통합을 이루고 있음을 강조하고 있다. 석고붕대나 왁스, 실리콘, 라텍스 등의 결과가 아닌 과정의 재료로서 신체를 캐스팅하여 불안정한 현대사회의 자아의 모습을 표현하고 상징적인 존재의 소멸을 의도하지만 캐스팅을 통한 온 작업과정을 통해 존재로서의 자아의 모습에 대해 새롭게 인식하게 한다. 또한 돌이나 흙, 끊임없이 불에 타서 흘러내리는 초로 이루어진 인간의 형상을 통하여 또 한 번 존재로서의 자아의 모습과 극복의 의지를 담아내고 있다. ; Human beings are born and die in society. Through the process of socialization, their self is formed and it exists interacting with language, culture and lifestyle in this relationship. Modern society brought human change of society, economy, politics and system as well as convenience of civilization through fast growth. However, the development of modern society s civilization degraded human to a part, and led them to absurd humanity and human alienation. They are losing true themselves in mechanical and materialistic society. This study is aimed at expressing the way of overcoming self through the ascetic process of art linking social issues to the internal problems of self. The ascetic process of art is for external communication with viewer and internal self-examination of self by showing the feature of self in modern society. In the introduction and chapter I, I manifested the purpose, method 50 and contents of this study. In Chapter II as the theoretical background of this study, I examined the meaning of self as being through human being, and also looked at Antony Gormley s and Marc Quinn s work following change of concept of human body in modern sculpture. Chapter III expresses the feature of modern society s self with human body, which is the most original and the only one in the scope of identity. Using various kinds of material, I put my body into a cast, and all this process of work is revealed as that of ascetic practice. Chapter IV suggests 7 pieces of work based on this background, and analyzed expression contents, material and method. As the result of this study, chapter V stresses that I try to find the meaning of being to overcome self in modern society by casting the body and experiencing the process of this work, and finally it comes to internal integration. Casting body with materials such as wax, silicon, latex is aimed at expressing the feature of insecure modern society, but the whole process of casting makes newly recognize the gesture of self. Also, through human image made of a candle continuously burning and melting includes the feature of self and will of overcoming.
