한국 발레 발전사에 나타난 동문 발레단의 업적 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 국제적인 무용인 발레가 우리나라에 도입된 이래 어떠한 상황과 배경 속에서 발전되어 왔는지 한국 발레의 시대별 흐름을 파악하고, 그 중 1980년대 한국 발레계의 주도적 역할을 담당한 동문 발레단의 활약과 업적에 대해 살펴봄으로써 단체의 특성과 업적을 새롭게 정리·인식하고, 미래 한국발레 발전에 중요한 기틀을 제공하는데 그 목적을 두고자 한다. 한국발레의 시대별 흐름을 사적으로 구분하여 보면, 1931년 3월 슈가로프(Alandra Sukharoff) 부처가 Y.M.C.A의 강당에서 공연한 것을 계기로 한국에 발레가 최초로 소개되었으며, 1946년 서울발레단 의 레실피드(Les Sylphides) 공연으로 한국인에 의한 최초의 발레공연이 시작되었다. 1950년대에 들어 각 대학의 무용과 설립으로 교육무용을 통한 창작효과를 도모하였고, 1960년대에는 이화여대의 무용과 개설로 대학에서 무용이 학과로 인정받게 되었으며, 1972년 국립발레단의 창단 및 공연으로 인해 민족적인 발레를 시도하려는 노력이 엿보였다. 1970년대는 한국 발레의 기틀을 다지는 계기가 되었던 시기로, 국립발레단의 고전작품을 중심으로 한 전막공연의 시도와 대학 중심의 창작발레 공연으로 많은 발레공연이 이루어졌다. 1980년대에 이르러 수많은 발레 단체들의 출현과 대학 동문 발레단의 눈부신 활약은 한국 발레계를 주도하는 핵심적 역할을 담당하게 되었고, 한국 발레를 진정한 무용 예술로서 정착시켰으며, 이를 토대로 현재 한국의 발레는 여러 동문 발레단의 활동을 포괄하여 세계 어느 무대에도 설 수 있을 만큼 상당한 수준을 가지게 되었다. 이러한 한국발레의 사적인 정립을 통해 알 수 있었던 결과인 동문 발레단의 업적은, 첫째, 창작유형의 확장으로, 클래식 발레를 지향하면서도 기존의 직업무용단이 다룰 수 없었던 실험적인 작품들을 시도하여 발레예술의 발전을 도모하였다. 둘째, 민족창작발레의 정립으로, 발레의 견고한 언어나 체계 속에 한국의 정서나 미를 내재화시킨 한국적 발레의 독창적인 테크닉이 정립되었고 우리 것에 대한 예술관의 확립과 더불어 세계 속에서 한국적인 발레로서 인정받게 되었다. 셋째, 발레의 대중화로, 체계적이고 과학적인 연구 아래 대중을 이끄는 여러 대작들을 창출해냄으로써 무용에 대한 사회적 관념이 개선되었으며, 보다 높은 차원의 예술을 지향하는 관객층이 형성되었다. 넷째, 교육자 및 안무가의 배출로, 발레교육의 활성화와 보급화를 목적으로 노력하였으며 동시대 인류에게 감흥을 줄 수 있는 한국발레 제작의 방법모색에 열중하였다. 이상과 같이 동문 발레단은 발레예술의 불모성을 타파하고 한국적 발레의 방향을 모색하여 한국 특유의 예술관을 확립시켰으며, 한국 발레의 한계라고 지적되었던 요인들을 극복함으로써 세계 속에 한국적 발레로서 비약적인 발전을 꾀하였다. 따라서, 차후 계속해서 이러한 동문 발레단들에 대한 연구가 다양하고 다각적인 관점과 방향에서 연구되어져야 할 것이며, 단체의 지속적인 발전을 위한 방안이 면밀하게 검토되어야 할 것이다. ; This study has a purpose to newly recognize the features and achievement of Korean ballet theaters and to provide an important basis to future development of Korean ballet by grasping the background of Korean ballet and its development, especially activity and achievement of alumni ballet theaters which led Korean ballet in the 1980s. According to my study on Korean ballet, the time flow of Korean ballet is divided into ① the first introduction of ballet to Korea after the Alandra Sukharoffs performance in the Y.M.C.A hall, ② the first ballet performance by Korean through Seoul ballet theater s Les Sylphides performance in 1946, ③ the development of college dance with dance departments established in each college in the 1950s, and ④ the opening of dance department in Ewha women s university in the 1960s made dance recognized as an academic department, and establishment and performance of the national ballet theater shows an attempt for nationalistic ballet. ⑤ In the 1970s, the foundation of Korean ballet was made, and there were lots of ballet performances led by the national ballet theater s classical piece performance and creative performance by colleges. ⑥ In the 1980s, many ballet groups appeared and splendid activity of college alumni ballet played a major role in Korean ballet, stabilized Korean ballet as true dance art, and Korean ballet at the present time has developed into a world class based on it. This achievement of alumni ballet theaters mentioned above is summarized as above. First, with the expansion of repetoire, they tried experimental pieces which professional dance theaters had not, and it developed ballet art into a bigger dimension. Second, with the establishment of national ballet, unique technique of Korean ballet, which internalizes Korean emotions and beauty within solid language and system of ballet, has become recognized as Koreanized ballet in the world with the establishment of thoughts of our art. Third, with the popularization of ballet, various big pieces of work that lead the public based on systematic and scientific study were created and it improved social concept on dance, and it also formed the audience that pursue art of upper level. Fourth, with educators and choreographers produced, they tried to activate and popularize ballet education and they concentrated on creating Korean ballet that could impress the contemporaries. As mentioned above, alumni dance theaters established Korean unique art by groping for the direction of Korean ballet and they developed Korean ballet into world class by overcoming limits of Korean ballet. Since they stabilized the status of Korean ballet in the world, their effect on Korean ballet history and artistic value is very high. Accordingly, I think study on alumni dance theaters should be done in various points of view and directions. First, we should study the characteristics and problems of each alumni theater by comparison. Second, we should do further study on the influence and problems of alumni ballet theaters including solutions. Third, we should think of various plans for the appearance of the most ideal and complete alumni theater as well as inspecting possible problems. Therefore, all these attempts will suggest the future direction of Korean ballet groups should follow as well as providing an important foundation of developing Korean ballet.
