황순원 서정소설 연구 : 단편소설을 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 황순원 단편소설의 서정성을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 황순원은 한국 소설사에서 빼어난 단편소설 작가로 꼽히며 개인의 내면과 미적 형상화에 초점을 둔 작가이다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 내면적이고 주관적이며 서정적인 특질들을 구체적인 작품을 통해서 확인해 보는 것을 목표로 삼았다. 황순원 문학의 서정적 중요성은 기존의 연구에서도 거론되어왔지만, 몇몇 작품에 한정된 인상주의적인 비평에 머물고 있다. 따라서 서사구조 속에서 내재된 서정성을 규명하고자 한다. 황순원 단편소설의 서정적 특질을 밝히기 전에 먼저, 서정성의 의미와 서정소설의 양식적 특질을 정리했다. 본 논문에서는 서정성의 가장 큰 특징으로 자아와 세계와의 합일을 지향하는 것으로 보았다. 이러한 서정성과 서정소설의 양식적 특징을 바탕으로 구체적인 소설을 통해 서정적 특성을 살펴보았다. 먼저 서사구조를 통해 서정적인 특징을 살펴보았다. 첫째, 서정적인 특질은 시점과 플롯을 통해 잘 드러난다. 일반적으로 일인칭 시점이 서정소설에 더 부합된다고 하지만 황순원 소설의 경우는 3인칭 시점과 액자화된 일인칭 시점을 사용함으로써 주체와 대상 사이의 적절한 미적인 거리를 유지함으로써 미적 대상을 아름답게 형용화시키고 있다. 서정적 자아는 세계와의 충돌을 겪고 내적인 상처를 입지만 내면의 이상향을 간직하고 추구하고 있다. 또한 플롯에 있어서도 정보의 지연이라는 의도적인 수법을 사용함으로써 미적 결말을 극대화시키고 있다. 그리고 군더더기 없는 깔끔한 인과적 구성원리로써 미적 현재성과 즉시성을 드러내고 있다. 여기에서는 자아와 세계와의 깊이있는 탐색이 이루어진다. 인물의 내면세계에 초점을 둔 플롯의 전개는 외부세계를 축소시키는 대신 내면의 세계를 확대하는 결과를 가져온다. 따라서 서정적 자아는 깊이있는 자아 성찰을 경험한다. 둘째, 황순원 소설의 서정성은 언어표현에서 잘 드러난다. 황순원은 시적인 문체로도 유명한데, 언어사용에 있어서 시적인 개인어와 애용어를 사용함으로써 감각의 환기작용과 대상을 오감으로 느낄 수 있게끔 한다. 시적 개인어와 애용어의 사용은 황순원의 작가적 품성과도 연관되며 그의 순수하고 아름다움을 추구하는 문학관을 엿볼 수 있다. 또한 상징의 사용으로 작품을 이미지화 시켜놓고 있다. 그는 모성에 대한 상징과 생명추구에 대한 상징을 꾸준히 사용함으로써 자아와 세계의 합일을 꿈꾸고 있다. 즉 주인공들은 비극적인 현실을 극복할 수 있는 서정적 경험을 통해 자아와 세계의 조화로운 이상을 경험하고 새로운 삶의 의지를 내보이게 된다. 다음으로 황순원 서정 단편 소설의 문학사적 의의를 살펴보았다. 그의 서정 단편소설은 우리 문학사에 서정 소설이라는 새로운 형식을 깊이있게 담고 있는 수작으로서, 단순한 소재주의적인 측면에서 논의될 성질이 아니라 서사구조속에서 미적으로 형상화되는 것으로 중요한 의의를 지닌다. 일부에서는 서정소설이 자기도피의 문학이며 역사나 현실을 외면한 문학으로 평가되기도 하나, 황순원 서정 단편소설은 오히려 인간과 삶의 내면을 밝히고 서정적 경험을 통해서 비극적인 현실을 극복할 수 있는 새로운 힘을 부여받게 하는 커다란 의의를 가지고 있다고 할 수 있겠다. ; This study is to examine lyricism in short stories of Hwang Sun-Won. Hwang Sun-Won has been taken to be a distinguished short-story writer in Korean novel history and is known as a writer focused on the inner side of individual people and aesthetic figuration. This study is ultimately to understand how these internalized, subjective, and lyric features are expressed in several works concretely. Lyric importance of Hwang Sun-Won s works has been studied in existing studies, but they account for just impressionistic criticism limited to several works. However, the author of this study is to find out lyricism implicated in the narrative structure. In advance of examining lyric features in short stories of Hwang Sun-Won, meaning of lyricism and stylistic features of his lyric novels were reviewed. In this study, pursuit of unification of self and world was considered as the major feature of lyricism. On the basis of these lyricism and stylistic features of lyric novels, the lyric features were examined in the concrete novels. First of all, those lyric features were found in the narrative structure. First, those lyric features are expressed well in a point of view and plot. Generally, it is well known that the first person point of view is more suitable for lyric novels. However, Hwang Sun-Won maintained aesthetic distance properly between subject and object and ultimately expressed the aesthetic object beautifully and figuratively in his novels by using the third person point of view and the first person point of view of a frame structure. In his novels, the lyric self has and pursues an inside Utopia though the self was damaged internally from collision with the world. In addition, Hwang Sun-won maximized aesthetic conclusion by using an intentional method of delay of information in view of plot. And, he expressed the aesthetic present and immediateness with seamless and clean causational structure. In this study, in-depth exploration of the self and world is developed. Plot development focused on the inner world of characters reduces the outside world and is resulted in extending the inner world. Therefore, lyric self experiences further self-consideration. Second, lyricism in novels of Hwang Sun-Won is found well in linguistic expressions. Hwang Sun-Won is famous for his poetic style and leads catharsis of sense and feeling of the object with the five senses by using poetic personal expressions and habitually used expressions. Use of poetic personal expressions and habitually used expressions is related to writer s personality of Hwang Sun-Won and can evince his outlook on literature to pursue purity and beauty. And, he formatizes his works by using symbol. He tries to unify self and the world by using symbols about motherhood and pursuit of life continuously. In other words, characters experience harmonious Utopia between self and world by lyric experiences for transcending tragic actuality, and shows a will for new life. Finally, meanings in literary history for lyric short story of Hwang Sun-Won were examined. His lyric short stories are outstanding works implying new style of a lyric novel in Korean literary history. They have significant meanings not in simply material-focused aspect but in aesthetic formatization in the narrative structure. Partially, the lyric novel is evaluated as a literature disregarding history or real world as well as self-escapist literature. But, lyric short stories of Hwang Sun-Won can be considered to be greatly significant in defining the inside of human life and supplying new power for overcoming tragic reality by lyric experiences.
