Abstract
; This is an analysis of Goh Jung Hee s poems that are divided with the early ones and the latter ones on the basis of theme and intention. The analysis is focused on the imagination and the manner of narrative. It shows the close connection between themes and the other elements of the poems by concentrating on the texts themselves that have not aroused sufficient interest. In Goh s early poems, here and now is considered as the lost paradise, which is based on the Christian point of view. It is religious and existential and also includes the political situations that are criticized for being untrustworthy, connected with mistrust in languages. Through this perception, the poetic self experiences the existential loneliness as a human being who is discarded from the paradise, and the loneliness is presented as craving for the salvation from the religious absolute, the God. The poet who conceives the present world as a night in the lost paradise uses effectually the acoustic images to present the truth that is hidden in the desperate situation. Being hidden and invisible, unfair and desperate hidden scenes are perceived by ear. Therefore, the sense of hearing is connected with the truth. The self who longs for the salvation from God shows the tendency toward ascent. Especially mountains that have real height are presented as the space where it is possible to communicate with God. Rising to a mountain that is considered as the ritual accompanies stronger will of the self, expecting the elevation of the soul as the self goes higher. That is, the self s will toward elevation of the soul enlarges as it rises higher to the mountain, and is reborn as a new existence. The longing to rise shows more actively through the imagination of fire. Verticality and purification of flame that makes the self rise appears as a way of existential salvation. It also contains the poet s will to lighten the dark ages even burning her own self. Besides, the poet embodies the one who experience the existential loneliness as a pilgrim, and using the spatial shift, shows the movement of new reflection and awakening. The poetic self who believes in the salvation and looks for the essence of the existence and the way to the salvation is similar to Goh herself who confronts the absurd realities of the society and wanders. The voice of the poetic self is presented by the speaker-oriented manner of narration. It s because God can be regarded not as the other outside but as the other inside who supports one in one s inside. And the way of appeal in rhetorical questions reveals the poet s intense and religious understanding of the times directly. Besides, satire and irony is the way to strengthen the criticism on the time of untrustworthy languages in that the languages are not pure and clear any more. The wrenched languages carry the distorted ages. In the latter poems of Goh Jung Hee whose former ones already begin to show the change from inside to outside, it is characteristic that those themes expand actively to the issues of others, us, the society and mankind. Especially the image of blossom, a change of existence that is accomplished through overcoming winter pain and anguish, is used positively to show the openness of the self who is relieved from the isolation and the loneliness. The olfactory sense embodies the consciousness of the poet who aims for the openness of existence and desires to be close to the objects. It connects with the essence and truth of the existence that is not displayed outwardly, and then it makes the poetic self open its mind to such a truth. The active intention of the poetic self to harmonize with others is presented more variously through a descending movement. The descent of the universe is the image of harmonious communion with you, the universe, and me. The image of a circle that unifies all confrontations is linked with the harmony. The imagination of water, that has motion, lends emphasis to the harmony. The images of moving water that implies the catholicity and the mobility reflect the idea of the poet, comprehending everything as it is. And then Goh tries to overcome the conflict between different ideologies and the discrimination between superiority and inferiority by using the archetypical image of mother with capacious motherhood. At the same time she stresses that a mother is the accuser of wrong history and the future of healing and reconciliation. The intention of communication is revealed by the listener-oriented manner of narration. An epistolary style is used to get the sympathy of listeners in the case of feministic poems, which is different from the poems with slogans. Besides, A form of Ssikgimgut is borrowed to console mistreated victims of the times and to get the grand harmony. As we know from the mentioned above, the themes and the intentions of Goh Jung Hee move from inside to outside, and from loneliness to communication. The way to solve the problems changes from divine level to human level and from ascent to descent, the images from fire to water, the sense from acoustic one to olfactory one, and the manner of narration shifts from the speaker-oriented to the listener-oriented. This prospect shows the need to understand Goh s poems with structure of confrontation such as feministic or popular poems as the ones having the intention toward harmony and communication in the end, for in her poems, the intention of the poet expands from me to us and from the nation to the third world, and again to the universe.
