'雙珠奇緣' 硏究

Abstract

<雙珠奇緣>은 19세기 후반에 출현하여 20세기초까지 여러 필사본을 남기며 꾸준한 인기를 누렸던 방각본 고소설작품이다. 이는 태몽 중 얻게되는 신물인 雙珠를 통한 남녀의 기이한 만남을 다룬 작품으로, 전체적으로 볼 때 결연과 군담을 비롯해 주변인물의 활약을 다루고 있어 특징적이다. 이 작품의 기존 연구는 <쌍주기연> 자체의 특성은 간과되고 오로지 작품 내 소재를 중심으로 한 유형적인 분류에서 언급된 정도였고 작품론이 부재한 상태였다. 따라서 본고는 <쌍주기연>을 구조와 삽화적 측면에서 고찰함으로써 작품만의 특성을 추출해내기 위한 연구로서 시도되었다. 연구대상 작품은 완전한 스토리라인을 갖춘 경판 33장본으로 정했다. II장은 <쌍주기연>의 전모를 파악하기 위해 마련되었다. 여기서는 작품의 서사적 전개와 아울러 여러 가지 삽입 화소의 구체적인 양상을 검토하였다. <쌍주기연>을 이루고 있는 기본구조가 영웅일대기와 기봉화소의 결합으로 이루어진 것임을 작품을 통해 있는 그대로 제시하고 작품 내에 수용된 여러 가지의 화소들을 추출하여 그 기능을 살펴보았다. III장에서는 II장의 분석들을 토대로 하여 <쌍주기연>이 지닌 구성적 특성을 추출했다. 그 결과, <쌍주기연>의 구조는 영웅일대기구조와 기봉구조를 절충하여 수용한 것임을 밝혀냈다. 두 개의 절충적 구조를 취하는 <쌍주기연>은 기존 삽화의 확장적 수용을 통해 작품의 흥미를 배가시키고 있음을 남장화소의 해학적 변용 , 자객퇴치화소의 결연담적 전환 , 군담화소의 역할 증대 등의 몇 가지 특징적 화소를 중심으로 논의하였다. 또한 장면의 구성방식에 있어서 기존 화소를 축소시키는 가운데 이질적 화소들을 무리 없이 연속적으로 결합하여 장면전환의 긴박감을 고조시키고 있음을 밝혔다. IV장에서는 <쌍주기연>의 고찰을 통해 이루어진 결과를 토대로 하여 작품이 갖는 통속소설적 성격을 살피고 이것이 소설로 어떻게 실현될 수 있는가를 고찰했다. 본고에서 다룬 <쌍주기연>은 조선후기 고소설의 통속화 경향 속에서 자연스럽게 등장한 작품이다. 따라서 이 장에서는 통속적 성격을 지닌 <쌍주기연>의 의의와 사적 위상을 정립하기 위해 동시대에 등장한 여러 통속적 작품들을 예로 들어 통속화 경향을 살폈다. 그 결과 <쌍주기연>은 당시 고소설의 통속화 경향과는 다른 삽화 수용방식을 꾀하여 독자들에게 보다 나은 흥미를 제공하였으며, 통속성에 대해 재고해볼 수 있는 기회를 갖게 하였다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다. <쌍주기연>의 서사구조가 두 유형의 소설구조를 절충하는 방식으로 드러나기에 그 소설사적 위치는 영웅소설과 기봉류소설 사이에서 찾을 수 있었다. ; Ssang-joo-ki-yeon is one of the ancient novels, which was published in the later 19th century and had basked in steady popularity with variform editions until the beginning of the 20th century. The story line focuses on the bizarre rendezvous of a couple via the token of trust, i.e. two marbles (ssang-joo) shown in the so-called "pregnancy dream." The whole content centers particularly around the formation of ties, war episodes, and activities of the diverse walks of life. The previous studies on Ssang-joo-ki-yeon mainly discuss its subject matter only to classify the pattern while ignoring the innate properties of the novel per se, thereby lacking any theoretical explication. Under these circumstances, this thesis makes an attempt to inquire into Ssang-joo-ki-yeon in terms of its structure and anecdotalism with a view to extracting the pure characteristics of the work itself. We chose the Seoul-area (kyeong-pan) version made of 33 acts, among others since it is complete in its plot. Chapter II gives the entire picture of this novel, Ssang-joo-ki-yeon. The narrational development and detailed episodic aspects of the work are dealt with. In other words, we illustrate the fact that this framework is constituted of the life of a hero and eccentric encounters through naming some instances. In addition, we examine the respective function of each episode introduced in the novel. Based on the analysis in chapter II, we look into the structural attributes of the work in chapter III. As it turns out, this novel has a blended construction of the biography of a hero and the encounter. We argue that Ssang-joo-ki-yeon increase its gusto by accepting and expanding the existing episodes, the facts of which are supported by the examples, "the humorous illustration of a manlike dressing-up," "the slaying of an assassin turning into the relation-forming," "the multiplication in role-playing of war episodes," etc. Besides, we observe that the composing manner of scenes is characterized by enhanced tension, which is possible by reducing the number of the existing episodes and inserting the alien episodes in a reasonable way. Chapter IV is alloted a task to examine what makes Ssang-joo-ki-yeon a lowbrow novel when mirroring the findings in the preceding chapters and how it could be realized as a novel. Ssang-joo-ki-yeon was naturally begotten amid the popularizing tendency of ancient novels in the latter part of Chosun era. Thus we come to take a look at the popularization through various popular literary works in order to present the implications and status of Ssang-joo-ki-yeon in that age. As a result, the novel in question is meaningful in that it gave a better kind of excitement to the readers by taking a different way of popularizing than the other novels in that period, viz. adopting an episodic insertion. Moreover, Ssang-joo-ki-yeon provided a chance to give a second thought to the matter of popularity. As far as the position of Ssang-joo-ki-yeon in the history of novels is concerned, we can presume that it should be placed between the hero novels and the novels of extraordinary encounters since its narrative structure exhibits itself somewhere between these two types of novels.
