圓光의 占察法會 시행과 그 성격

Abstract

이 글은 원광이 시행한 占察法會를 통해 신라사회에서 불교 수용의 의미를 되새겨 보고자 하는 바램에서 시작되었다. 여기서 점찰법회는 신라에서 서민들을 대상으로 행해진 최초의 법회로, 이를 통해 서민들의 신앙체계가 어떻게 변화해 나갔는가를 엿볼 수 있다는 점에서 중요한 의미가 있다 하겠다. 하지만 지금까지는 남겨진 사료의 부족으로 점찰법회의 구체적인 모습과 성격을 자세히 알 수 없었던 한계가 있다. 이 문제를 풀어 보고자 하는 것이 이 글의 또 하나의 의도였다. 이 글은 다음과 같은 순서로 전개하였다. 원광이 살았던 시대적 상황은 어떠하였으며, 당시 중국과 신라의 불교계 상황은 어떠하였는가. 원광은 어떻게 점찰법회를 알게 되었는가. 신라에서 대승교학연구의 문을 연 원광이 점찰법회를 시행하고자 한 직접적인 동기는 어디에 있었으며, 언제 어디서 시작하였는가. 점찰법회는 어떠한 의식 절차로 진행되었으며, 신앙대상은 무엇이었는가. 점찰법회가 중국과 달리 신라사회에서 널리 유포될 수 있었던 이유는 무엇인가. 점찰법회를 통해 불교를 알게 된 서민들의 정신세계에는 어떤 변화가 있었는가. 마지막으로 점찰법회의 성격, 나아가 불교와 토착신앙과의 관계를 어떻게 규정지을 것인가. 한편 점찰법회는 진평왕대의 원광이 시작한 이후 경덕왕대의 진표를 거치면서 그 전통이 고려시대까지 계속 이어진다. 특히 진표의 경우는 미륵신앙, 지장신앙 등과의 관련성이 언급되면서 점찰법회의 성격이 점차 복잡해짐을 보여 준다. 그러므로 점찰법회가 시대에 따라 그 성격이 어떻게 변해갔는가를 살펴봄은 불교의 사회적 역할과 사상사적의 의미가 어떻게 변해갔는가를 이해하는 데에 기여하는 바가 있을 것이라 생각한다. 이런 의미에서 이 글은 앞으로의 연구에 있어 기초적인 작업이었다 할 것이다. ; This thesis investigates effect of the Chumchal Buddhist Mass on people s religious life in the Shilla Dynasty. The Chumchal Buddhist Mass, originally organized by Wonkwang, played an important role in making people believe in Budda and study Buddism seriously. The Chumchal Buddhist Mass, especially, is the first congregation for the populace. Examining it informs us of how the religion for populace variated in Shilla Dynasty. This study attempts to answer the following questions. What were the social and religious environments like when Wonkwang initiated the Chumchal Buddhist Mass and what made Wonkwang, who started research of the Mahyanist Buddhism, hold the Chumchal Buddhist Mass? Which rite was performed for it and what did believer pray for? What made it possible that the Chumchal Buddist Mass gained popularity in Shilla not in China? How did the buddhism affect the religious life of the populace in the Shilla Dynasty. The Characteristics of the Chumchal Buddhist Mass are also examined as well as further relationship between Buddhism and totemism. Following Wonkwang, the Chumchal Buddhist Mass was further developed by Jinpyo. The Chumchal Buddhist Mass continued to be held during Korea Dynasty. The characteristics of the Chumchal Buddhist Mass become more complicated over time as its association with belief of Mireuk and Jijang reveals. This study provides the basis to understand the role of the Chumchal Buddhist Mass for people s life in those days.
