'시계탑'의 音樂構造에 관한 考察

Abstract

본 논문은 1999년 8월 황병기가 작곡한 17현 가야금 독주곡 <시계탑>의 음악적 구조를 분석하여 그 특징을 밝히려는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 본 연구는 각 악장별로 음계, 선율 및 화성, 박자 및 리듬을 고찰하고 이를 종합하여 구성형식을 정리해보는 방법에 의하여 각 악장의 음악적 구조를 분석하였다. 위와 같은 분석 과정을 통하여 <시계탑>의 음악적 특징을 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 제1악장은 AㆍBㆍC의 세 단락으로 구분될 수 있으며, 미음계와 도음계에 의하여 선율이 진행된다. A단락과 C단락의 선율은 3화음이나 반음계 적인 변화음, 이끈음 등을 사용하여 전통 음악적인 5음음계의 형식에 얽매이지 않는 자유로운 진행을 보이는 반면, B단락의 선율은 비교적 전통 음악적인 형식에 준하는 2도 및 4도의 진행을 보인다. 이 악장의 리듬을 살펴보면, A단락에서는 진양조 형태의 6박형 리듬인 6/4박자의 4(♩♩♩♩)+2 리듬과 3/4박자에 의한 3박형 리듬이 주를 이루고 있고, B단락과 C단락에서는 6/4박자 두 마디를 합친 12/4박자의 중모리 장단에 의한 리듬형태가 나타난다. 제2악장은 이 작품의 중심이 되는 부분으로 시계탑의 모습과 시계바늘이 움직이는 소리가 사실적으로 묘사되고 있다. 이 악장은 도입부단락, A단락, B단락으로 나누어 볼 수 있는데, 이 세 단락의 음계는 모두 도음계로 구성되어 있다. 선율은 시계 소리를 사실적으로 묘사하기 위하여 도(C)음에 의한 장3화음의 화성 적인 진행과 단선율적인 진행을 고루 사용하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이 악장은 처음부터 끝까지 템포 ♩=66이 유지되고 있으며, 4/4박자가 중심을 이루는 가운데 중모리 장단에 의한 리듬이 다양한 모습으로 나타난다. 제3악장은 AㆍBㆍC의 세 단락으로 구분될 수 있으며, 미음계와 도음계에 의하여 선율이 진행된다. B단락은 대부분의 선율이 16분 음표로 구성되어 있기 때문에 빠른 음형에 의한 선율진행에서 오는 긴장감이 형성될 수도 있지만, 8분 음표와 4분 음표로 이루어진 A단락과 C단락의 선율이 이를 감싸고 있어 전체적으로는 안정된 선율구조를 보인다고 할 수 있다. 이 악장은 템포 ♩．=112-120으로 진행되고 있다. 이 악장은 8분 음표에 의한 3연음으로 일관되는 리듬에 의한 선율로 진행되는데, 이때 각 3연음의 첫음에 의해 중심선율이 만들어진다. 이 악장의 종결부분에서는 속도가 템포 ♩=52로 느려지면서 4분 음표와 2분 음표가 나타난다. 이 악장은 도음계와 미음계로 구성되어 있는데, 이 작품을 통해 순수하게 5음음계만이 쓰인 유일한 악장이다. 리듬은 거의 12/8박자의 자진모리 장단의 틀 안에서 8분 음표로 이루어진 3연음의 반복으로 이루어지는데, 부분적으로 9/8박자로 변박되어 불규칙한 선율길이의 대비에서 오는 긴박감을 형성하기도 한다. 이상에서 살펴본 바와 같이 <시계탑>은 전부 4악장으로 구성되어 있으며, 전체적인 구성형식으로 보아 진양조→중모리→중중모리→자진모리 의 구조로 되어있다고도 할 수 있어서 전통음악인 산조의 구성형식을 따르고 있다고 할 수 있다. 이 작품은 17현 가야금의 넓은 음역과 풍부한 음량을 토대로 하여 시계탑의 모습과 시계소리를 묘사하고 있는 전통적인 구성의 현대적인 곡이라고 할 수 있다. ; This thesis has the purpose to analyze the musical structure and characteristics of the 17-string Kayagum solo, "The Clock Tower" composed by Hwang, Byung-Gi at August 1999. It focuses on studying the musical structure by analyzing the scale, melody, harmony, meter, and rhythm of each movement. The musical characteristics of "The Clock Tower" are as below. The first movement consist of three paragraphs of AㆍBㆍC and is marched by the scale "E" and "C". While the melody of paragraph A and C is followed not traditional pentatonic scale but free scale using Triad, chromatic tone, leading tone and etc., the melody of paragraph B goes by the traditional format of Second and Forth. As for rhythm, paragraph A is composed of 4(♩♩♩♩)+2 rhythm of 6/4, which is 6 tune rhythm of Jinyangzo, and 3 tune rhythm of 3/4. And paragraph B and C follow the 12/4 rhythm of Joongmori. As the main part of the music, the second movement describes the features of clock tower and the sounds of hands realistically. This movement consists of intro, paragraph A and paragraph B, which are all composed of C. In melody it uses both harmonic and non-harmonic major scale to describe the sounds of hands realistically. This movement keeps tempo of ♩=66 and shows variety rhythm by Joongmori length with 4/4. The third movement consists of three paragraphs of AㆍBㆍC and is marched by the scale "E" and "C". Because paragraph B consists of sixteenth-note, it may have tense by dramatic melody move, but it generally has the stable melody structure because the melody of paragraph A and C, which consist of eighteenth-note and quarter-note, round the paragraph B. This movement has the rhythm by Joongjoongmori length of 12/8 with tempo of ♩．=60. The forth movement consists of three paragraphs of AㆍBㆍC by pattern of melody movement and is marched by tempo of ♩．=112-120 which is twice as fast as the second movement. This movement is marched by the melody with consistent rhythm, which is by the triple tones of eighth-note. And the main melody is made by the first of triple tones. This movement that consists of the scale "E" and "C" is the only one with a pentatonic scale. The rhythm follows the repeat of triple tones of eighth-note within the pattern of 12/8 Jazinmori and it may have tense caused by a contract of irregular melody length. As mentioned above "The Clock Tower" consists of 4 movements. Because of the general structure with "Jinyangzo→Joongmori→Joongjoongmori→Jajinmori", it is possible to say that this music follows the structure of Sanzo which is a Korean traditional music. "The Clock Tower" is a modern music describing the features of clock tower and sounds of hands with traditional structure based on great compass and volume of 17-string Kayagum.
