전환기 사회에서의 디자인의 새로운 역할 : 디자인 큐레이팅을 중심으로

Abstract

세기의 전환기가 갖는 단 하나의 가능성이 있다면 그것은 반성과 그 반성들의 결집이다. 여기서 반성이란 지금까지 사용해 온 개념과 담론의 틀을 바꾸어 역사적 현재를 새롭게 범주화 하는 일을 의미한다. 현재 우리가 처해있는 상황을 그러한 반성의 작업들이 진행되고 있는 중이며 그 속에서 디자인은 주목 받는 문제 중의 하나이다. 인간이 삶을 영위하는 공간 속에서 디자인은 이미 소유(to have)를 넘어 존재(to be)의 위치에 도달하게 되었고 이제는 그 존재 가치를 확고히 하는 단계로 이동 중이다. 지금까지 디자인이 과학적 사고에 치중한 보편적 가치를 추구하며 물리적 영역에서의 확장에 주력했다면 앞으로의 디자인은 탈 디자인 현상으로서 특수 가치를 창출하기 위해 예술에 관심을 기울이는 정신적 사고로서의 확장을 기대하게 될 것이다. 이는 디자인(design)이 디자인하기(designing)에만 전력을 기울여서 이루어질 수 있는 것이 아니므로 디자인을 조력하는 다양한 활동들이 디자인계에서 뒷받침되어야 한다는 사실로 귀결되어질 수 있다. 또한 디자인을 이해하기 위한 제반 사항들이 부족한 관계로 디자인이라는 용어는 삶의 깊숙한 곳까지 침투한 상태임에도 불구하고 디자인을 이해한다고 말하기에는 무리가 따르는 현실에 대한 자성의 차원에서 의미를 가지게 되기도 한다. 따라서 본 연구는 전환기 한국 사회 디자인의 새로운 역할을 조명하는 과정을 통해 역사적 선상에서 디자인을 해석하고 설명하고 평가하고 이해하는 디자인 큐레이팅(design crating)의 역할을 기대해봄으로써 디자인의 미래를 위한 역사의 중요성을 인식하려는 데에 그 의의를 두게 된다. 우선적으로 디자인을 과학과 예술의 이분법적 사고의 측면에서 고찰하는 방식을 선택하였으나, 이는 단지 변화하고 있는 패러 다임에 의해 확장되고 수정되어진 디자인 개념을 무리 없이 이해하기 위해 전제되어진 것이며 이를 바탕으로 오늘날 새로운 예술로 부각되고 있는 디자인을 이해하고자 하는 것이다. 나아가 이는 다양성으로 인해 정체성에 대한 혼란을 겪고 있는 디자인이 상실의 위기에 직면한 역사성에 대한 자각을 토대로 디자인의 미래를 준비할 수 있도록 하려는 데에 그 의미를 두려고 하는 것이다. 이를 위한 실천적 방안으로서 디자인 큐레이팅을 제안할 수 있는데 주요 활동으로는 디자인 박물관(design museum)과 디자인 갤러리(design gallery) 운영, 학예 연구 및 관련 업무, 디자인사 기술가 디자인 비평 및 디자인 언어목록 작성 등을 거론해 볼 수 있다. 이는 디자인의 역사성을 회복하고 위상을 수립함과 동시에 디자이너에 대한 잘못된 고정관념을 수정하고 그들의 잠재력을 도출 시킬 수 있는 기회를 제공받을 수 있는 계기로 기대되어지는 것이다. 오늘날 디자인은 현대 문화의 새로운 교양 중의 하나로 디자인을 경험하는 과정에서 가치와 의미를 추구하는 형태로 전환하고 있기 때문에 역사성을 기반으로 하되 그 역사성은 과거를 보전하는 차원이 아니라 미래의 원천으로 작용하여 우리다운 디자인(original design)을 탄생시키는 초석이 되어야 할 것이다. ; If the turning point of the century has one single possibility, it is reflection and the concentration of reflection. Here, reflection menas a new categorizing of the historical present by changing the frames of the existing concepts or discourses we have used. In the present situation, such reflection is in progress among which design is one of the topic issues drawing attention. In the space of human living, design has arrived at the position of to be beyond of to have and now is moving up to the stage of solid existence Design until now has pursued universal values centered on scientific thoughts and focused its efforts on expanding itself in the physical area, but from now it will extend to the spiritual area concentrating on art to create specific values. This can not be accomplished by putting forth all the energies to designing, rather we can conclude that various activities of the design world should support design. Also, as all facts to understand design are wanting, the term, design, gets a meaning of self reflection under present circumstance when it is unnatural for us to say we really understand design in spite of deep penetration of that term into our living. Therefore, the significance of this study lies in realizing the importance of history for the future of design by expecting the role of design curating in interpreting, explaining, evaluating, and understanding design through illuminating the new role of Korean social design at the turning point. First of all, the author of this study ha chosen to investigate design both in scientific and artistic aspects to naturally understand the expanded and modified concept of design by the changing paradigm, and based on this to understand design as a new art of today. Furthermore, this is for design undergoing confusion about its identity due to diversity to prepare for the future of design on the basis of realization of the present times facing the critical moment of loss. As a practical plan for this, design curating can be suggested, in which management of design museum or design gallery, literature study and related business, criticism of designs and description of design history and drawing up of design language list are major activities. With this as a momentum, not only the historical meaning of design can be recovered and its social position can be established but also wrong fixed ideas about designers can be corrected and their potentiality can be extracted. Today design as one of new liberal arts of modern culture changes from an experiencing process to a pursuit of value and meaning, so it should be a foundation to act as a source of preserving the historical meaning for the future rather than the past and to give birth to original designs very Korean.
