The criticism of King Lear : a historical survey and some patterns

Abstract

「리어왕」에 대한 비평의 역사는 300년을 넘는다. 비평가들은 서로 엇갈린 주장 속에 진지한 논란을 계속해 오고 있다. 그러므로 이 논문에서는 그 동안의 중요한 비평들을 연대순으로 분석함으로써 다섯 가지 문제에 대한 해답을 찾아보려고 했다. 곧, 1.「리어왕」에 대한 비평에서 주로 문제시 된 항목들이 무엇인가, 2.「리어왕」에 대한 비평의 초점이 시대를 따라 어떻게 변해갔는가, 3. 어떤 종류의 비평 또는 접근 방법이 있었는가, 4. 같은 작품에 대해 전현 의견을 달리하는 이유는 무엇인가, 5. 어떠한 접근이 보다 나은 비평의 태도라고 할 수 있는가. 위의 다섯 가지 항목 중 1, 2의 문제는 중요한 비평들을 분석 검토하는 과정에서 직접 또는 간접으로 그 해답을 얻었다. 그리고 이것을 다시 결론에서 요약 정리하였다. 본 연구의 결과로서 얻어진 3, 4, 5 항의 문제에 대한 해답을 간단히 요약하면 다음과 같다. 「리어왕」에 대한 비평에는 여섯 종류의 접근 유형이 있으며, 이것은 또 다시 아홉 가지 유형으로 세분되었다. 그러나 필자가 얻은 결론은 이러한 모든 유형이 결국에는 두 종류의 접근 태도로 분류될 수 있다는 것이다. 그 하나는 극적 또는 고전적 접근(the Dramatic or the Classical Approach)이고 또 다른 하나는 시적 또는 낭만적 접근 (the Poetic or the Romantic Approach)이다. 모든 작품과 마찬가지로 「리어왕」은 외적인 사건과 내적인 의미로서 구성되어 있다. 특히 이 작품의 특성은 그 내적 의미가 심오한 데 있다. 따라서 비평가들이 그 어느쪽에 치중하여 연구 비평하느냐에 따라 서로 상반된 의견들이 나타나고 있다. 그러므로 필자가 제시한 보다 나은 접근 방법은 외적인 면과 내적인 명을 종합하여 작품을 전체적으로 보는 통전적 접근(the Integrated Approach)이라는 것이다. ; There have been serious arguments among the critics over the problems of King Lear for more than three hundred years. In this thesis those problems are examined in chronological order for the purpose of seeing: (1) the main issues of the criticism of King Lear; (2) the changes of the interpretation of the play in various periods; (3) the kinds of approaches to the play; (4) the origin of contradictory interpretations of the play; and (5) the more acceptable approach to the criticism of King Lear. Among the above, the first and second are directly or sometimes indirectly discussed and analyzed in the course of the examination of the problems of King Lear. The third, fourth and fifth are the areas of my conclusions resulting from this research study. The criticism of King Lear is categorized into six main approaches, which are again divided into nine sections altogether. But the Classical Approach or the Romantic Approach is what I ultimately find in all the criticism of King Lear. It is natural that there are such contradictory interpretations of the play, because the play has both outer temporal action and movement, and inner metaphysical action and movement. These two dimensions imply contradictory visions; and the critics are inclined to see one of these two dimensions. Therefore the Integrated Approach, which integrates both dimensions of the play: the body (or the structure) and the spirit (or the meaning), is suggested as the more acceptable approach.
