미니멀리즘적 특성에 대한 조형 연구 : 직물제작을 중심으로

Abstract

1960년대 현대 미술의 지배적 역할을 한 미니멀리즘은 근대 미술이 상(像)을 대상화하려고 했던 전통적 관념과 1950년대에 격렬한 몸짓으로 표현의 극치를 이루며 격동적인 심리학적 공간 구성을 이루었던 추상표현주의에 대한 반발로서 출발하였다. 미니 멀 작가들은 현상학적 환원의 방법을 통하여 우리의 시각을 순수한 대상세계로 돌리게 하고 일체의 주관적 편견과 인간적 감정을 철저히 배제시키다. 또한 미니멀리즘은 근대 미술이 이미지를 대상화하여 환상적 공간의 극대화를 이뤄온 것에 대한 부정으로서, 미술에 있어서의 탈 허상화를 이루기 위한 근대적 상황에 대한 반 예술적 부정정신의 의미를 갖는다. 본 연구는 이러한 미니멀리즘의 중요한 정신적 의미와 조형적 특성에 기초하여 어떠한 대상을 재현하려 하거나 추상적 개념을 표현하지 않고, 보다 객관적이고 중성적이며 심리적인 요소를 제거한 작품을 표현하고자 한다. 이론적 연구방법으로는 첫째, 미니멀리즘의 개념과 발생 배경, 현상학적 환원과 반 예술적 부정정신으로서의 사상적 기초를 고찰하였다. 둘째로는 미니멀리즘의 사상적 기초를 기반으로 하여 나타나는 작품에서의 조형적 특성을 대표적인 미니멀리스트들을 예로 들어 살펴보았다. 크게 3차원적인 물체성을 띠는 것과 상관구도를 피하여 중성화하려는 시도로서의 반복성, 내부성을 부인하고 외부적인 실재성에 관심을 두는 비 내부성, 마지막으로 관람자로 하여금 주위 환경을 의식하게 함으로써 스스로의 실재를 확인하게 만드는 환경성으로 구분 지었다. 셋째로는 이러한 조형적 특성들이 나타난 미니멀리즘적인 경향의 현대 섬유 작품들을 분석 해 보았다. 작품 제작에 있어서는 일루전의 극소화, 제작의 최소화, 그리고 형식에 있어서의 단순화를 추구하기 위해 직기를 이용한 기본 평 직의 동일한 단위의 작품을 다수 제작하여 일정하고 규칙적인 반복을 이루었다. 또한 3차원적 물체성을 띠기 위해 지극히 차갑고 산업적인 동선과 반투명과 반반사의 건축용 썬팅 필름을 주재료로 제작하여 어떠한 심리적 은유나 인간적인 감정을 배제시켜 작품의 근원을 중심이 아닌 외부로 돌리고자 하였다. 그러므로 서 작품에 있어서의 허구적이고 상징적인 선입견을 없애고 선명하고 투명한 상태를 그대로 제시하고자 한 것이다. 본 연구를 통한 결과는 첫째, 작품에 있어서의 표현 행위와 표현 요소를 최소화함으로써 객관적이고 중성적인 3차원적 물체성을 나타낼 수 있었고 둘째는 작품의 구성과 배열에서의 단순하고 규칙적인 반복성을 통하여 서로 관계되는 구성을 피하고 특정 부분에 대한 강조를 하지 않음으로써 어떤 것을 표현하고자 하는 관계로서의 상황을 피할 수 있었다. 셋째, 작품에 있어서 재료의 선택이나 그것들을 조립하는 방법에 있어 은유적으로 꾸밈으로서 표현하고자 하는 것이 아닌, 허구적인 면을 없앰으로써 보다 선명하고 투명한 상태로의 세계를 제시할 수 있었다. 넷째로는 작품의 배치에 의해 관람자를 주위 환경과 함께 동화시키고 시선을 작품 내부로 끌어들이기보다는 외부로 확산시킴으로써 스스로의 존재를 의식 할 수 있는 장을 마련하여 공간 차원의 확장을 이룰 수 있었다. 이와 같은 연구를 바탕으로 앞으로의 계속적인 연구와 창작활동을 통해 현대 미술의 발전적인 조형 세계를 펼쳐 나가야 하겠다. ; The development of modern art starts from denying modern situation, and minimalism also shows up by that influence. Minimalism, which played a dominant role in the 1960s modern art, achieved to ultimate in expression with a violent gesture, and appeared as resistance to abstract expressionism. As a theoretical study method, I examined idealogical basis as anti-art spirit, the concept and generating background, and phenomenal restoration, Second, based on the theoretical basis of minimalism, I looked at modeling characteristics, taking examples of representative minimalists. They were classified into three-dimensional object, repetition as an attempt to neutralize interrelated composition, non-internality denying internality and interested in realism, and environmentalism which makes spectators to identify their own realty by recognizing environment. Third, I analyzed modern fiber art pieces of minimalism trend where these modeling characteristics appear. In producing work, I made several pieces of the same unit using a weaving machine to pursue the minimization of illusion, smallest production and simplicity in forms, and gave them regular and settled repetition. Also, to have three-dimensional object character, I made them with cold and industrial movement and semi-transparent and semi-reflective sun proof film for architecture to exclude psychological metaphor or human emotion, and intended to turn the origin of work to the external, not the core. By doing so, I tried to remove imaginary and symbolic preoccupation on work and suggest clear and lucid state. The results of this study are first, I could present the objective and neutral three-dimensional object character by minimizing expression actions and elements, and second, through simple and regular repetition in compositioning and arranging work, I could avoid situation as relation of expressing something by not emphasizing certain part. Third, I could suggest a world toward more transparent and lucid state by removing fictional aspects-metaphorial expression in choosing or assembling materials for work. Fourth, I could make space-dimensional expansion that viewers are assimilated into environment by the arrangement of work rather than drawing them into the internal work. Based on this study, I d like to make more developmental modeling world in modern art through continuous study and creative activities.
