시각적으로 반영된 자아의 상(像)

Abstract

프랑스의 후기구조주의 철학자 자크 라깡(Lacan)은 “인간이 언어와 문화를 기반으로 형성된 질서를 통해 자아를 발견하고 자신의 위치를 파악하게 된다”고 하였다. 그러나 그에 의하면 의식화는 타자(他者)에 의해 가능하므로 결국 자아의 의식화는 자아가 더 이상 주체가 아닌 객체임을 확인시킨다. 라깡은 인간이 거울 속에 비친 상(像)이 자신의 상이며 그 상을 통해 ‘나’를 받아들이게 된다는 점을 어린아이의 자아형성과정에 비유하여 설명하였다. 본인의 작업은 라깡의 자아개념을 반영하고 있다. 그것은 자아가 인식되기 어렵다는 점을 깨달은 개인적인 체험을 토대로 한 것이다. 다만 자아 그 자체가 아니더라도 객체화된 자아인 자아의 ‘상’을 통해 본인이 찾고자 했던 자아를 발견하고자 하였다. 본인은 실제적인 접근에 있어서 본인에게 친밀한 재료들을 중심으로 그것들의 물질성을 연구하는 과정을 통해 다양한 자아의 상을 구체화하게 되었다. 제Ⅰ장의 서론에 이어서 제Ⅱ장은 자아에 대한 탐색을 시작하게된 계기를 두 부분으로 분류하여 설명했다. 첫째로는 전술한 라깡의 정신분석학중 자아에 관한 그의 분석을 살펴봄으로써 포스트모던 시대의 자아개념을 보편적으로 밝혀보았다. 둘째로는 본인의 경험들을 중심으로 본인이 깨닫게된 자아관에 관한 배경적 설명과 개인적인 견해들을 설명해보았다. 본 논문에서 본인의 생각과 입장들을 크게 다룰 수 밖에 없었던 까닭은 작업양식이 주관성에 크게 치우쳤기 때문임을 밝히고자 한다. 제Ⅲ장에서는 본인이 사용한 재료들을 탐구하고 작업과정에서 시도한 방법들을 설명해 보았다. 여기서 본인은 광목천과 패널 그리고 단색이라는 세가지의 재료들을 중심으로 분석하였는데, 재료들의 물질성은 궁극적으로 본인의 자아상에로의 접근을 가능하게 해주고 본인이 바라던 자아의 의식화를 가능하게 해주었다고 믿는다. 마지막으로 결론에서는 지금까지의 작업을 되돌아보며 미흡한 부분을 반성하고 앞으로의 작업방향을 제시해 보았다. ; When speaking about what has led me to swim in the deep pools of art. I suppose the one word that crawls into my mind is SELF. Self is the most wanted word that I have ever known, ever since I realized that my grandmother was grandma and me, me . But as most kids experience the various stages of what the self goes through in order to become adults, for me it was obviously all there too, but left me with painful and chaotic memories. However my learning process was not just pains, but also a realistic understanding of what my self really was. This understanding of the self was, as Lacan put it, an ephemeral existence always caught in the hands of time and place. The continually unstable state of my self during my adolescence brought my senses to the need of a consciousness, especially that of hopefulness which I eventually discovered in art. As most artists make art to pleasure themselves these days, I too, began holding hands with the visual world to satisfy my needs of a pursuable yet make-believe self to keep me safe and sound. My works visualize self with the help of three materials- raw canvas, panel and monochrome. These materials have been my long-time favorites and therefore could meet my needs sufficiently. All three exist within the scope of the viewer as to interact within one another, while at the same time exist independently from one another. All that shows in my works is what I have been longing for and searching for. And above all, I believe that art will keep me hang onto the hopes and dreams of what I may fear of losing in the real world. Welcome to the visual world, dear Self!
