아프리카 원시미술을 이미지화한 직물디자인연구 : 기호의 조형적 표현을 중심으로

Abstract

아프리카는 지리적인 자연환경과 사회관습과 종교로 인해 그들만의 고유하고 독특한 문화를 지니고 있다. 현대에 와서 교통, 통신의 발달로 인해 [지구촌]이라는 말이 성행할 정도로 각국 또는 각 지역의 문화권간 거리가 날로 좁혀지는 현실에서 독특한 이미지를 가지고 있는 아프리카에 대한 연구가 더욱 필요시 되고 있다. 다양화, 개성화를 추구하는 현대사회에서 아프리카의 원주민들의 미의식과 아프리카 원시미술의 무한한 디자인요소들은 새로운 직물디자인 개발의 영역을 확대시켜주고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 아프리카 자연환경과 원시미술에서의 이미지, 특히 서 아프리카와 중앙아프리카의 직물에서 보여지는 색상과 문양의 이미지를 직물디자인의 요소로 발전시켜 직물에 응용하였다. 본 연구의 이론적 배경으로는 아프리카 원시미술의 발생동기와 정신적 기조를 바탕으로 하여 아프리카 원시문양을 고찰하였으며 서 아프리카와 중앙아프리카의 직물에서 표현된 색상이나 기하학적인 문양을 고찰하였다. 이러한 이론적 배경을 바탕으로 한 아프리카원시미술에서 느껴지는 이미지를 재구성하여 현대적인 직물의 표현가능성을 모색하였다. 작품에서 사용된 색채는 아프리카 자연환경 즉 건조하며 메마른 사막, 흙, 돌에서 느껴지는 색상과 그들의 종교의식이나 문화에서 보여주는 화려하며 토속적인 색채를 사용하였으며 직물의 조직은 능직을 기본으로 하고 다양한 표현을 위해 조직을 변형하여 제작하였다. 소재는 어느 특정재료에 중점을 두지 않고 다양한 소재를 사용하였으며 아프리카 이미지를 주제로 하여 작품을 제작하였지만 토속적인 이미지에 바탕을 둔 현대적인 느낌을 주는 직물로 제작함으로써 보다 다양한 표현을 시도하였다. 본 연구에서는 한국이 아닌 다른 지역의 원시미술과 이미지가 무한한 디자인 요소를 가지고 있다고 생각하였으며 이러한 요소들을 응용해 다각적인 작업을 통해 무한한 가능성의 충분한 활용이 이루어졌으면 한다. ; Africa has its own peculiar and unique culture born its geographical environment, social customs and religions. Under present circumstances when the distance between different nations or cultures is getting shorter day by day to such extent as global village is a common word due to traffic, communicational developments, we need to study Africa with abundant unique images more than ever. In modern society pursuing diversification and individualization, the aesthetic sense of African natives and the infinite possible design elements in their primitive arts could expand the area of fabric design to new developments. Therefore, the author of this study is to develop the natural environmental images of Africa, particularly those color and pattern images we can see in Western and Central regions of Africa into some design elements and apply them to fabric. As a theoretical background, the origin and spiritual bases of African primitive arts have been referred to investigate those primitive patterns, colors or geometrical patterns in the fabrics of Western and Central Africa. Based upon these theoretical backgrounds, natural images, color images and pattern images have been reconstructed to explore expressional of the modern fabric. Colors that have been used in authors works are those in the natural environments of Africa, that is, off dry and desert, soil or stones and brilliant, local colors Africans use in their religious rituals or cultures, and as to the texture, twill has been the base upon which transformation of texture has been made to create various expressions. As for the material, various material - not one special material-have been used, and the theme is mainly about African images but actual fabric has been given modernistic touches on the basis of Africa images. Considering the fact that primitive arts or images of other nations as well as Korea passes infinite design elements, the author of this study hopes those elements could be made most of their infinite possibilities through diversified workings.
