Abstract
Gabriel Urbain Faure (1845-1924) was one of the chief French composers in the middle of the 19th and 20th century, and his music style had great influence on such composers as Achille Claude Debussy(1862-1918) and Joseph Maurice Ravel(1875-1937). The lessons in L Ecole Niedermeyer, which he began to take in his childhood, helped him to develop his musical talents and also cultivated his Catholic Belief, which dominated over him during all his life. This led him to produce a number of religious compositions and among them, and also among all his works, the 「Requiem Op.48」 is considered as one of the best. He began the composition of his Requiem in 1877, completed it in 1890, and finalized the orchestration in 1900. In this thesis, I exhibited some aspects of Faure s music style through researching and analyzing the 「Requiem Op.48」. Firstly, it comprises the investigation of the work s background using several bibliographies and scores, and after that, the analysis, focused on the form, orchestration, the figuring structure, the harmonic structure, the relationship between the chorus part and the orchestra part, and the development of subject motives, follows. The conclusion is as below. Faure s 「Requiem Op.48」 which has the formation of a mixed chorus in four voices and an orchestra in the scale of two winds arrangement consists of 7 movements that are 「Introit-Kirie」, 「Offertorium」, 「Sanctus」, 「Pie Jesu」, 「Agnus Dei」, 「Libera Me」, and 「In Paradisum」. Such a constitution makes it different from other general Requiems by the fact that it includes an 「In Paradisum」and at the same time, it doesn t include a 「Dies Irae」. This expresses his positive views about the afterlife. The forms take either a binary form or a ternary form according to the lyrics, keys, the figuring structures of the orchestra part, and tempos. The main themes, the accompanied melodies and the figures, which are presented in the first sections, are widely applied throughout the whole music so that they keep unity. All movements include a short prelude of 1 - 6 measures, and some of them have an interlude and a postlude which is the same as the prelude, or an extending cadence. Especially, in the third section of 「Agnus Dei」, a variation of the first part in 「Introit-Kirie」 is presented, and again, the first six measures of 「Agnus Dei」, transposed down by the minor third, return. The chorus line of each movement mainly progresses stepwise, but leaps by the third, fourth, and sixth interval, that appear in the change of keys, are the chief elements used in the progression of the melody, while augmented intervals or diminished intervals are rarely used. In the material of scale, the church mode, the chromatic scale, and the melodic minor scale are partially used with majors and minors. The keys are frequently changed not only between the related ones but also between those that are far from each other. In cases of harmony, successive parallel progressions of the dominant chords or the leading-tone chords are frequently used and the traditional 7th or 9th chord, the ornamental chord, the borrowing chord, the altered chord, the additional chord, and the augmented chord are the chief materials used overall, and also the 4th chord is used. The frequent use of non-harmonic tones, such as appogiatura or pedal point, and the unsettlement of non-harmonic tones or the put-off of their settlement formed the frame of a harmony which has the air of Impressionism, escaping from the traditional functional harmony. In cases of cadence, a Faure cadence , an altered form of an Amen cadence , is used many times. In the small scale orchestration, the winds and the percussion were restrictedly used in fanfare or the splendid introduction, and the organ, in unison with the chorus lines, mainly played the role of basso continuo. In addition, this orchestra part is organically related to the chorus part through melody s imitative or unison progression. The dynamics are relatively restrained in the range of p to ff and these are mostly used by ascents and descents of the chorus line. Simplicity and restraint are the key words that set Faure s 「Requiem Op.48」 apart from other similar works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart(1756-1791), Louis Hector Berlioz(1803-1869) and Guiseppe Verdi(1813-1901). They reinforce the feeling of humility and reverence.
