Aaron Copland의 "piano variations"에 대한 분석 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 20세기에 활동했던 미국의 작곡가 Aaron Copland(1900-1990)의 "Piano Variations" 고찰을 통하여 Copland의 음악적 경향및 미국 음악계에 미친 영향을 살펴보기 위함이다. 그는 대중적이며 미국적인 민속적 색채가 짙은 음악을 만드는데 지대한공헌을 한 작곡가이다. 그는 작곡가와 청중 사이의 거리를 좁히기 위해 자기 자신만의 새롭고, 독창적이며 개성 있는 미국적인 성향의 음악적 표현으로 20세기 음악을 만들어낸 작곡가이다. 그는 독창적 특색의 발레 음악, 영화 음악, 피아노 음악, 오페라를 만들어서 대중과 작곡가의 거리를 좁혔고, 프랑스 유학 시절 프랑스 음악에서영향을 받아 Jazz를 미국적으로 해석하여 쉽고 개성 있게 작곡하였다. 예를들어 blues리듬은 후에 그의 수많은 복합 리듬에 영향을 미쳤다. Copland의 Piano Variations는 첫 번째로 독창적인 음악어법과 새로운방식을 채택한 것으로 주제와 20개의 variation과 coda로 이루어진variation form이다. 이 곡은 4개의 음 E-C-D# -C# 이 거의 모든 음과 화성에 관련되며 작품의 구조는 Arnold SCho¨enberg의 영향을 받았으나, 자신의음악적 언어로 해석했다. 예를 들어, 원형의 음형들을 반복하는 것이 그것이다. Piano Variations에 나타나는 음악어법은 불협화음과 협화음의 결합, 복합리듬 양식, 화음구조를 기초로 해서 조성을 표현하며, Jazz적인 요소도 나타난다. 그의 음악어법은 구조적인 틀 속에서 독창적인 음악 어법을 만들어내는것이었으며 특히 그의 Piano Variations에서 보이는 독창적인 음악어법은화성보다는 생동감있는 리듬의 중요성을 강조하고, 현대 음악의 특성인 불협화음을 사용하고 있으며, 미국적인 색채를 가진 Jazz 기법을 잘 조화시켰다. 이는 새로운 미국적 요소를 가진 피아노 음악의 발전에 비중있는 역할을 담당하였다. ; The aim of this thesis is investigate the salient musical characteristics of Aaron Copland (1900-1990) and his influence on American music by analyzing his 1930 piano piece, "Piano Variations". Copland has made a great impact on 20th century American music with his inclusion of popular and folk-like elements in an art music tradition. He wrote many functional pieces, such as ballet music, radio and cinema music, piano music and operas and by employing "Americanisms" in his new music, he narrowed the chasm between the audience and the composers of the 20th century. Copland s "Piano Variations" is written in the traditional style of theme and variations, while at the same time utilizing new methods. The piece consists of the theme, twenty variations and coda. In the work, Copland experiments with various possibilities of tone and harmony. The tonal structure of "Piano Variations" shows the influence of Schoenberg, though Copland maintains a tonal center with dissonance and consonance, pandiatonic chord formations and polyrhythms. It is also possible to detect certain influences from the jazz idiom. Within the conventional theme and variation form Copland creates a unique musical language, especially in his use of innovative harmonies, animated rhythms, and prevalent dissonances which represents "Americanism." Copland played a significant role in the establishment and further development of American piano music.
